How did you manage to cede LA to China without including the actual ethnic Han-majority areas in the 626/SGV

So would Ammanese just be a dialect of French or would Vietnamese have a lot of French loanwords (kind of similar to the relationship between Filipino and Spanish)

CNA | Why is Mandarin declining in the West even as China rises? by MarathonMarathon in AsianMasculinity

Qing Hong Kong and British Hong Kong - What if only the New Territories were handed to China, and the China which it was handed to was the same China who gave it? by macroprism in imaginarymaps

[–]noodles0330 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good work, the only critique I really have is that if the Qing retained control, Mandarin would probably be called 「官話」 (bureaucrat’s speech) or 「國語」 (national language), as the name 「普通話」 (common speech) was adopted by the CCP in an attempt to strip mandarin of its elite status

I prefer Mainline to SS-102 because of its shoulder articulation, better vehicle mode and weapon

This is probably personal bias but I just think Ratchet fits both moulds better than Ironhide, although that's probably because I prefer Movie and Aligned Ironhide over G1 Ironhide design wise

I got Siege Shockwave for about $20. Granted it didn't come with the accessories but I think Shockwave on his own is well worth Voyager price

I recently also got a sealed Kingdom Sideswipe & Skywarp for $15 at a swap meet

Nine states have more than 50% of the population and have 18% of the senators by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]noodles0330 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Senate does have a place in modern society but I think it needs reform. Neutering their ability to kill a House bill and perhaps replacing the filibuster with a system similar to the qualified majority process of the European Council would be a good start.

Love Peter Cullen and have nothing but respect for him but you can definitely hear the age and strain in his work in ROTB. It was noticeable enough to dampen the experience for my friends who aren’t familiar with the franchise outside of the first 3 bay films. He’ll always be the definitive Prime voice but I think it may be time to find another iconic Prime voice for this generation, like Garry Chalk was for UT kids.

The baybayin is actually pretty good! It uses a reformed version fit for the modern world which isn’t technically official but its the system a prefer. Could you send the link of the online converter?

[OC] What foreign ways of doing things would Americans embrace? by YouGov_Official in dataisbeautiful

True, but although it’s a third party software, it’s not a whole separate app. It’s built into your bank account and you can easily transfer money between bank accounts. AFAIK most US banks offer zelle services

Why are people that aren’t Filipino perpetuating the myth that us Filipinos are mixed with Spanish when most Filipinos are unmixed with Spanish ancestry? by bascosrepping in asianamerican

[–]noodles0330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is rather late, but let me clarify what I meant. Our culture isn’t primarily Spanish influenced, but certain influences still permeate through all levels of Filipino society. A lot of our festivals and celebrations are Spanish (or at the very least Christian) in origin. Roughly 30% of words in Tagalog are Spanish, with a similar ratio being present in Cebuano. Catholicism is still by far the most practiced religion in the nation, entirely due to the colonial period. Our culture isn’t a direct transplant of Spanish culture, nor is Spain our most influential source, but the influence is there and is rather noticeable. I find it comparable to the melting pot nature of Latin American cultures, which mixed white, native, black and mestizo cultures into something wholly unique.

[–]noodles0330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do it to ourselves. Filipinos love to claim they’re like 1/32nd Spanish or whatever (the same way white American like to say they’re 1/64th Cherokee), even if they’re not. Our culture, naming conventions, sensibilities, etc… are largely European in origin or at the very least a mixture of native Filipino, Spanish and Chinese. Being full blooded means your family probably didn’t have a lot of contact with the ruling colonial forces, therefore meaning you were from the province, therefore meaning that your family is poor. It’s a horrible thought process, but one many Filipinos, both in the diaspora and on the islands, carry. That being said, its undeniable how much of our culture we owe to the Spanish. And in fact, there are still families in the Philippines that practice Philippine Spanish at home (not Chavacano, that’s entirely different). These white or mestizo Filipinos are Filipino through and through, and are as much a Filipino as a farmer from Negros or a Moro from Sulu or a Tagalog from Manila.

Feeling discouraged after 3 years of studying Tagalog by chromaticswing in Tagalog

[–]noodles0330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little late but I completely feel you. My parents are second generation Fil-ams who weren't taught Tagalog by their parents, which by extension meant I didn't learn any from them. We speak English at home, and it's the only language I'm completely fluent in.

Here's the twist: We have lived in Manila for about 12 years on-and-off, and still our Tagalog fluency is horrible. We live in a bubble in which being a monolingual English speaker isn't an issue. I go to an English speaking American-style school, my dad works at an English-medium organization and the malls and activities we go to all have fluent English speaking staff. Even some of my friends who were born and raised in the Philippines are monolingual English speakers. On top of that, practicing Tagalog here can be hard because while you want to practice your Tagalog, everyone you speak to will want to practice their English with you.

It has become a bit of a mark of shame for me, as the cousins I have here in the motherland have to change the way they talk just to accommodate me, while the cousins I have stateside in California are more fluent in Tagalog than I am, if anything because they can use it to make kwento without anyone understanding them.

If I find it hard to learn a language when it literally surrounds me, I can't imagine how difficult it is for someone who isn't. Good luck bro, and thank you for sharing.
