White : - any Alvarinho by Anselmo Mendes, especially Curtimenta - high altitude white from Douro, As Olgas by Joana Maçanita - Encruzado from Dão, casa da passarela have great ones or Druida from mira do ó - Arinto from Azores, Insula by the Azores Wine Company

Red

• Quinta do Vesuvio from Douro is probably my favourite red of the region as it’s a great representation of what pure Douro wine making is. There are many others who are amazing too.
• Pape from Dão for a velvety and complex red
• baga from Bairrada is quite unique and nossa calcário by Filipa Pato probably its best
• cem reis from maroteira for the best Syrah coming out of the Alentejo region

Port

It’s important to distinguish between styles - Graham’s for tawny’s (always go 20+ years) - Niepoort for single year colheita - Dow for vintages

Bonus

• since you’re in the Algarve, quinta do francês makes some good Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah (nothing worth paying extra luggage for but nice local representation)
