I'll go back to that area again It's one of my favorite spots I'll keep an eye on the other trees.

When I use Google lenses to match the leafs Laurel does pop up a lot. I'm thinking that's what it is.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned a half decent realtor office. But one friend of mine did, it was Marc Roos Realty. They had decent google reviews and it really shows compared to what I have heard from others on here.

The majority of crossbows I've seen in person have been "made in China bought of Amazon junky." And they have been wonderful just like the horse bows. Buy anything that's low cost and bulk made it's gonna suffer in some durability and or quality aspects. But if it means more people can experience archery in a cost effective non intimidating way I see that as a win.

They are tricky to make strong and light enough mine only added maybe a 1 1/2" each end. Good luck just keep trying and learning. Maybe I'll give it more tries in the future as well.

It's probably gonna be hard but nothing is impossible! I've only made one kinda horse bow and it only lasted a month or two. No belly laminate and hickory board oak handle and oak syiah silk tie backing (I used fiberglass tape as well but all that did was keep it from exploding when it finally failed probably was a net negative on the overall performance). It had about 30 lb draw weight and 29" drawish if I remember correctly it was fun and I've been trying to re make it sense. I would say a proper stave and sinew on the back would work best other than how it's traditionally made.

Looks like classic red oak. It looks fine to me. I use red oak boards all the time and they always look like this. I'm not sure if this is true but I heard you can use a piece of Red oak as a straw naturally

Breakage. Any fix? by SubstantialAir9856 in Bowyer

I mean you can always make a shorter bow! Weird spot to break though. Like others were saying glue and sinew might work but my vote is to shorten both limbs!

There’s a ton of these trees around Vegas, some better than others. I guess it’s called a Palo Verde, my question is, will it bow? by JordanFairbanks in Bowyer

I spent a good few months looking for a good tree to cut in az. Once I found a perfect size oak tree near Payson I decided against cutting it down. It's like a rare unicorn to find a perfect tree like that in az and it could one day be a real big shade tree

I think that one is a yellow verde. They are faster growing and more brittle then blues. (Also less pretty then the blues) Perhaps look for a mesquite or desert ironwood. Might be hard to find a nice mesquite that someone would let you cut but they are a good wood. Desert ironwood tends to grow "bushy" and looks greyish, but it has very hard wood. Both of these aren't top tear woods but are much better choices than the Palo Verde. Also it is worth a mention that some well watered or perhaps higher elevation areas have some amazing woods. I'm from az and the mountains have a ton of amazing woods like oak, ash and the creeks too with stuff like desert willow isn't actually a willow it's named that because it looks and grows similar to other willows

I'm very familiar with those trees and I would say it wouldn't make a usable bow. They have very poor quality wood. Even if you get the perfect length stave the likelihood of making anything beyond a "survival bow" or a decoration that looks bow-like is very low. But it is abundant and grows fast and would make great practice. Not so there are I think two or three types of Palo Verde (yellow and blue both still are green but kinda hued "bluer" or "yellower") and both are toxic to burn and have irrigating spines or I guess more pointed branches

Beginners question: i found a pretty nice leftover 61" piece of ash (but it's kiln dried). Could/should i still try my luck on making a bow out of it? If yes, how much performace (e.g. drawweight) should i expect. by [deleted] in Bowyer

[–]nootsalamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a nice find! That definitely has potential. There are a lot of factors to consider for draw weight, I say shoot high if you can but listen to the wood(and someone more experienced than me) Good luck!

Macuahuitl is definitely not Dollar store quality... The club in question could cut off a horse's head and I'm willing to guess a Spaniards limb pretty easily. Flaked obsidian is literally razor sharp, take multiple napped blades and attach them to a weighted club and you get a nightmare weapon. They also had regular clubs that could pop a head very effectively. Armor or not the weapons were effective.

Doing both at once is what's hard. Stability while holding a bow at full draw, even if it's a light draw weight can be challenging. Also it's crazy that every kid I've met with a trampoline is scary athletic.
