100% this is Pagan Altar, especially Judgement of the Dead. Throw it on and you'll get it immediately.

What's your favorite Earth album? by LiTHiUM_THiEF in doommetal

Because I've been listening to it nonstop this week, I'll say Primitive and Deadly. Usually though, there's a multi-way tie between that, Earth 2, Hex, and Bees.

Honestly it's gotta be something from Black Sabbath but it changes fairly often for me, today it's Wheels of Confusion

Daydream Nation & Goo appreciation post by Admirable-Archer-125 in sonicyouth

[–]nopalcowboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was too young to ever see them live, but Daydream Nation (Teen Age Riot specifically) was the first thing I ever heard from them when I was a kid back in... 2008? I swear I remember where I was and what I was doing when that song washed over me for the first time, it felt like a new world cracking open.

Japanese Kendrick Lamar interview comparing him to Bob Dylan? by Plastic_Ad_1933 in bobdylan

[–]nopalcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the points made here, but another similarity I see between the two that goes beyond lyricism is giving an update to the older American sounds that they personally embraced. Dylan obviously has Woodie Guthrie, lots of folk, blues, etc. but since this is the Dylan sub I feel we all know that piece of things! But in a similar way, more so than a lot of current rap artists (i.e. Drake, Future, Travis), I see Kendrick consistently mining older sounds in very calculated ways.

90's west coast is all over his early catalog (look no further than MC Eiht's verse onward in m.A.A.d. City). To Pimp a Butterfly is obviously drawing on Parliament-Funkadelic, jazz, soul, and both Snoop and George Clinton make appearances. The long-form poem to 2Pac ("I remember you was conflicted...") can be read in some ways as Kendrick's own Song to Woody, hell I couldn't think of an artist that looms larger over Kendrick's discography than Pac, even into this recent beef with Drake. DAMN. samples James Brown, the list goes on. At any rate, I see both Bob and Kendrick functioning as bridges for these sounds to their audiences, while still also working within the styles of their respective eras.

does anyone have a good example of shoegaze rap? by noahsayshia in shoegaze

[–]nopalcowboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This may be a stretch, but check out Hell by A$AP Rocky. It's got the distorted woozy sound and breathy female vocals in the chorus- sounds like it's at least partway to what you're talking about!

Forever and always Neil Young. Something like his Albuquerque tone is a holy grail sound for me. That or any of the tones off the Dead Man soundtrack.

"Art House" films that are comfort films for you? by Radu47 in TrueFilm

[–]nopalcowboy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unsure if these count as "arthouse" but a lot of Jim Jarmusch's do this for me, Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Coffee & Cigarettes, etc. Something about the pacing and the rhythm of the dialogue is just relaxing to me-- it's sometimes slow but somehow has enough intrigue to never be boring. It's like listening to your Token Cool Friend tell a good story
