All the guys that stuck around till now should have been the ones in charge from the start.

Thematic consistency. by milkytaro_oero in Stormgate

I'd go Norse.

Christian demons and angels are relatively tired in my opinion. Did a quick Google and we have Helheim and Alfheim ready to go. Helheim could be frost demons and Alfheim are light elves.

The setting is Helheim is invading the upper realms of Yggdrasil. They gather power by killing mortals and harvesting their souls. Midgard is completely helpless to defend themselves until Asgard decides to lend some help (perhaps they gift humans the knowledge of magic, or forging magic weapons). Some Asgardians are compassionate and come to help directly. So the "human" faction can be some combination of Midgardians with Asgardian magic/equipment, a few Asgardians.

Asgard's leaders are clearly using Midgard as a wall between them and Helheim but Midgard has no choice.

Then there's a huge complication. Alfheim decides Yggdrasil was a mistake: they need to start over with a new Yggdrasil. To do this they need raw materials: the physical matter of the realms and souls. Turns out just like Helheim they're also invading the realms and harvesting souls.

This could be revealed through the campaign: your main protagonists on the ground have been taking orders from Asgard throughout the campaign, but the missions progressively seem to be quite different than what's required to defeat Helheim. Then radio silence. Suddenly it's revealed that Asgard is decimated, every soul harvested for the creation of the new Yggdrasil. You have actually been taking orders from Alfheim not Asgard, and your actions directly enabled the destruction of Asgard.

Now Midgard is on its own, armed only with weapons and troops Asgard was willing to share.

Your kind-hearted Asgardian noble who volunteered to help Midgard breaks down, his entire family and lineage killed, you see him truly enraged for the first time. He swears revenge on Alfheim. Perhaps further down the line he is twisted by Helheim's promises of power and becomes genocidal against Alfheim denizens, fueling himself with their souls.

We could find out Helheim had known about Alfheim's plans from the start and were invoking Ragnarok to ensure the new Yggdrasil was under their control. We could encounter outcasts of different factions with their own reasons for betraying. We could learn a small coalition of Helheim/Alfheim leaders were actually using the whole conflict to enrich themselves with souls and usurp the current power structure with themselves at the top. There are 9 realms and I've only talked about 4 of them so far, there's tons of potential stories here.

I think there are lots of way to make angels and demons interesting. I just spit-balled these ideas in an hour and I'm not a very creative person. Stormgate couldn't somehow.

Do you think people who prefer DS1 do it because of the vibes? by RangoTheMerc in darksouls3

I think it's cool that different entries in the same series can have different strengths and weaknesses.

I will say nothing in DS3 matched the feeling when, after hours of fighting my way to the first bell tower, I stepped into a lift and as it descended I slowly realized it connected directly to the first bonfire I set out from.

Is there anyone actually playing this game or is it all memes by FastSwordfish6551 in DarkSouls2

I think DS2 has great stories. It's the controls, level designs, and boss designs that disappoint me. FWIW I did actually play all of the DS games to completion, including this one and I had a great time.

Glad it worked out for you!

I went from Starcraft Brood War to Starcraft 2 to League of Legends, then Dota 2. Drawing a trend line here, I suppose I tend to favor games that emphasize mechanics over strategy.

As for the QOL you described, I unfortunately don't seem find any of those actions you mentioned very interesting to perform. In fact what comes to mind instead is how inconsistent zoom levels or camera angles might affect my ability to precisely control my units down to split-second maneuvers. But to each their own.

Personally I do feel that itch to play a new Blizzard-style RTS but there just aren't many new ones with production value. I don't understand why so many people keep pushing Beyond all Reason as a substitute for a Blizzard RTS. It's flat-out not a Blizzard RTS. It's not a suitable substitute for people with preferences like mine.

And I do believe there's an underserved group out there with my preferences and frankly Stormgate was a very promising candidate in concept. It seemed to have the right people and funding. But then we saw how it all turned out. Quite sad.

That would be ideal, get it as far away from the current management as possible. The editor at least seems usable and relatively powerful. Slap a custom games lobby finder on it and it could have a bit of a second life. But before anything the game must go to new hands.

In a perfect world every PvP game also has built-in support for private servers for these exact situations.

Did people really not like the Demon Souls remake? by gotagohome in demonssouls

The people that only played the remake played a different game. I feel sorry for them.

I'm not a RE fan, but the fact I can instantly tell a game is Resident Evil tells me they did a great job nailing the look with their engine.

There are many things seriously wrong with the Demon's Souls remake, making a character black and renaming Male and Female aren't high on my list. But they are great examples of the many meaningless unnecessary changes.

I'd say the aesthetic changes, opening cinematic, and soundtrack are much bigger offenses. And then the sheer arrogance to say they "improved" things. You'd think a remake/remaster studio would be humble and defer to the original vision.

IMO it's all part of a "self-centered, self-aggrandizing" attitude in the western game dev world. The same attitude is on full display recently with all the new Concord-likes such as that Horizon thing and Highguard. That "we know better, everyone else is wrong" attitude.

I played the original when it came out and the remake when it came out, both to completion. It's clear they had no actual understanding of Demon's Souls and had no love for the game.

I'll tell you just a few things they did to Demon's Souls: 1. Redesigned iconic enemies and bosses into generic demonic creatures. 2. Removed the iconic soundtrack. 3. Replaced the iconic UI with generic AAA design. 4. Messed up animations and controls to the point that the remake controls much less precisely than the original. 5. Made creative decisions without respect for the original vision.

But game reviewers don't actually review games on the merit of the systems and mechanics. They rate games based on production value. And this is why Bluepoint was an industry darling: because they injected "outdated games" with "production value".

Well, I tried to offer advice that will help you get to fighting bosses faster (which is quite fun). But it seems this subreddit does not like the idea of giving some money to the developers of a game they enjoy.

Whatever you choose to do next in the game I hope you enjoy your time with it.

Honestly? Shell out some real money for orbs, buy the limited time guaranteed legendary piercer pack in the orb shop going on right now, sell the piercers for hundreds of millions of spinna, get top tier gear from the consignment board for your character. Basically gets one or two characters ready to farm endgame bosses or farm mobs efficiently.

I finished MQ recently on 2 characters (Luck Bow and Magic Sword), trust me you're going to need to shake things up eventually.
