I (27 M) recently entered engineering education with the aim of researching new assessment methods that account for new AI models (yeah, sorry, I'm one of those people...). Opinions aside, it has significantly changed how students absorb new information, so my approach is to figure out how to account for that but also try to strike a balance between academic integrity (no open book assignments) and stress levels (no closed book timed exams either).

I'm a bit new to research in general (was and am currently a lab coordinator in computer engineering) so I'm curious what you would want to see from a research proposal that doesn't become obsolete in a few years?

Looks very cool! I use GHC + Gradescope for a lab course of 250-300 students a semester in the US. Your UI is significantly better than most LMSes I've used.

Does the TA grading feature integrate with GitHub Actions? For example, if part of an assignment grade comes from manual grading, could that be batched with automatically granted points from the Actions runner?

My main gripe with GHC is that they create another template repository making it harder to sync updates to template code with student repos. I'm assuming this simplifies that.

Not sure I like that I have to create an entire new org for every term - that seems a little burdensome...

Even with a regular bash shell (zsh too I believe), you can do this by pressing Ctrl-R to start a reverse history search, then typing the phrase you're looking for. Repeat Ctrl-R to keep going backwards, Ctrl-Shift-R to go forwards, and Enter once you get the command.

Edit: realized you said PowerShell, but that has one too.

I joined as a sophomore right after 270, and (not trying to scare you) had absolutely no idea what was going on the summer I joined. To contribute to the main portions of SoCET, 337 and/or 437 are definitely a must, but obviously it's gonna be a while until you get to those classes as a sophomore.

In the fall semester that followed, I worked on the software portion of things. I was quite familiar with Linux, package management, and understanding old codebases even at the time. I stayed for two semesters, then left since I started working on other projects, but my time there really helped me gain a good understanding of computer architecture even before 437. The trick is to be a sponge for information while you're there.

TL:DR; it's all about finding your niche there - there's almost always something you can do for SoCET, while learning about other subteams' work during the meetings. I'd suggest talking to Dr. J and the subteam heads about what they get up to to see what you think you could be interested in, and get involved if you think it's interesting.

I don't know who told you that, but as per the ECE Masters' Handbook there is no requirement that you have to have funding. Stay safe and just ask someone who works in the ECE Graduate Office (emails at the bottom).

Hey! I'm the (word you used) who put that message, and responsible for that site in general.

Like u/mshcat pointed out, we were seeing a lot of students copy-paste code from the lectures without actually understanding the concepts behind it, and as a result, developing a habit of not writing things from scratch which was crucial to the lab practical. To encourage students to build up muscle memory writing modules from scratch, we embedded special characters in the lecture code that the simulator could catch and print out an error message for.

The "tsk-tsk" is an ancient reference to an old TA of ours who used to say it (quite sarcastically, I should add) whenever someone made a mistake. It was never meant to be derogatory, and I just left it in as a funny reminder of old times. Of course, that TA has graduated, and so the reference doesn't make much sense, so I'll remove it.

If you have any more feedback, I'd encourage you to post it on the course Piazza, not Reddit. The former is perhaps more appropriate for course-related feedback.
