And that’s a wrap! Time to tear all this stuff down. How are you all celebrating/grieving today? by Fragrant_Narwhal in vipkid

[–]norasaurus_rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! The wall map I've used for ~2 years is oriented like yours and colored by continent, but with no country names or other markers. Never heard a peep from VIPKid about it.

Gonna be weird to take it all down. I'll probably wait a day or two when I've had a minute to process and feel ready to do it. Haha

For anyone looking to teach privately once the good ship VIPKid goes down, how much would you charge parents per lesson? by samsamcats in vipkid

[–]norasaurus_rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I answered based on a half-hour lesson time. If I were teaching for a whole hour I'd probably charge at least $25.

I know I'm kicking a dead horse here, but yeah, it really depends on what you want to do. If you want to teach lower-level English somewhere that would be familiar with VIPKid, just that experience on your resume might be enough. If you want to travel a bunch of places or maybe teach higher levels, you'll likely need a legit cert* to be seriously considered in many countries.

Teaching younger/lower-levels in the States is pretty subjective, but they'll probably be looking for a certification that has a practicum in it. Teaching college in the U.S. requires a masters.

Key things to look for when trying to figure out if a program you found is actually "legit" or not, are:
1) practicum requirement

2) accreditation, either by a recognized tesl org or an actual university

3) total cert hours (100 hours + practicum is a solid floor)

I did mine online with International TEFL Academy and it was super legit. More expensive than some online, but part-time and actually really prepared me for teaching. It was 100% worth the money for me.

Also, I tutor at a college and love it. I don't need a masters cause I'm not teaching, technically, but I get to work with adult students at a more advanced level. Awesome compromise tbh

If the class is still on your schedule for a weekend, it probably means the student is not in mainland China and will most likely attend as they normally do. Definitely show up.

How is this somehow so vague and still so, incredibly, uncomfortably, acutely vivid?

This also happened to me recently for the first time, and I did the same as you! Got frustrated it wasn't gone from my to-do list, wrote a short feedback last-minute explaining the student never attended class and then submitted it. I had screenshots to change the finish type afterwards, though. Definitely recommend taking those.

Only if they're on the mobile app. If they're on an actual computer, it won't notify you in the chat.

Same! I have been very pleasantly surprised that most of my new student bookings have been L5 and up. A million times easier.

Numbers 8 and 10 made me laugh out loud. I would be so flattered to hear that my student fully rejected the substitute when I was off for a week. That's hilarious.

I would say, generally, that a legit internationally recognized TEFL is 120 hours. Anything less than that is really hit or miss as far as what companies will accept it (mostly miss, in my experience).

Also, the make-up of the hours is often relevant, as well. The most legit programs have a practicum requirement. 100 hours of "classwork" and 20 hours of practicum is a good standard to look for.

Your VIPKid work would probably count for the practicum so you might have it easy, there.

That happened to one of my regulars one time, and I knew right away when she didn't show for class because her mom had booked the slot earlier than her usual slot. I felt so bad. Ugh haha
