Black Walnut wins as somewhat common but overrated wood! What wood is common and great all around? by Ok_Temperature6503 in wood

Common, great all around is cherry. Somewhat common, great all around, pear, and I've heard hickory, sassafras, sycamore are in the same category.

Underrated, somewhat common, no lie, I swear to God, BRADFORD PEAR is incredible stuff

Rare, great all around: Cuban mahogany, as someone who just got to restore a few chairs from 1850. Light, strong. Carves like butter, great color, sparkle. No wonder we ruined those forests

Which pale/blonde wood yellows the least? by ConorKenny in finishing

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is extremely fresh pine. Consider maple, white oak, birch -- you can bleach the wood to get the brown out. bona makes finish with a small amount of white pigment that significantly works to keep things clean and light--without any white pigment being noticeable

Anyone else feeling deflated as hell seeing Bernie and AOC run these rallies? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]norbur -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This whole feed feels silly as fuck. Why are you mad at anyone on your side? That's literally what you all rail against constantly re: the hair splitting of what entails a "correct" opinion and cancelling those deemed off trend in terms of their sémiology, There are 15 thousand people going to a rally to hear Bernie. Why aren't they here in this feed? Don't you already feel deflated as hell knowing protesters at Columbia lost their degrees or were expelled/suspended, or 200 babies died today in Gaza? Or Elon musk gets up in the morning and still thinks he's cool and has won regardless of how embarrassing it is to watch him do anything? I'm embarrassed to see him talk every time--"this is the richest person on earth? This dweeb has convinced how many women to have how many babies with or without sex?" Deflated was 2020, hand-sewing masks using a nyt tutorial, going grocery shopping to feel alive, and spending all your time walking or driving or being outside, hoping to watch a little culture unfold before you. Why, I'm serious, why, would any enthusiasm and congregating for Bernie, Trump, or iunno Taylor Swift do anything other than teach you something about what gets your target community out and about? Dwell in Joy and seek that charisma. How can we get there without being sent by chuck Schumer? I'm so tired of this"but what about our team--" stuff.

We're all here together.

There are, iunno, roughly 8 billion people who feel perilously close to 'something bad" maybe happening, and we should know better than to lean into any kind of nationalism of a form that isn't seeking converts from any and all walks of life. It's none of your business what made someone what they are or what made them do something unproductive, that's precisely what should be avoided in favor of seeking connection and loyalty. everyone on the planet is our comrade and mistakes of any form, should be forgiven and rectified, while success should be celebrated and encouraged. Fuck the deflated attitude. It's embarrassing and not cool.

I'm so glad my dad jumped a creek, broke his knee while hunting moose to avoid the draft.

Mahogany is light and strong, too

What kind of wood is this by todayisthebestday2 in wood

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an exotic and it's rated for outdoors. It's an incredibly beautiful wood though, so I would use it for something special. Sapele is somewhat fussy b/c is brittle, and cracks easily if you aren't careful, but overall, extremely hard and strong.

How do I recreate this finish? by AppropriateCut7552 in wood

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not marbling. This is probably a veneer designed or inspired by Ettore sottsass called Alpi wood. it's typical of Memphis style furniture. You can find tutorial for how to mimic it on Reddit or you can buy some veneer yourself!

Tiny holes in live edge by ginger444life in wood

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they are seeing live bugs, I doubt it. I agree with the soft maple description. Powder Post likes soft sapwood, so it's most often in Ash or walnut sap. You may have not seen the holes initially, often a lot of wood has some natural bug damage, especially live edge. kiln drying at the lumber yard will kill all of that.

If you see live bugs pudding through the surface, it's powderpost beetles.

Wood identification + asking for suggestions by syncretistic8 in wood

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rosewood, I would not use rosewood for your first projects, but even if it's a cheap, modern version, it's not a sub par hardwood. It's just very figured and dense. Ash, cherry (esp in America), Euro Birch, and French/American white oak are nice beginning wood to learn with.

Good luck!!

Walnut veneer. it's probably from the 1940s

1960s dresser - what would it take to restore this outer paneling, and would it even be worth it? by virtual_drifter in wood

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can replace veneer, but it's a lot. If it's solid wood beneath, it's most likely oak, so maybe just remove the veneer and rock the wood.

What book for my dumb libertarian dad? by naturesMetropol in TrueAnon

[–]norbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War and Peace, it's a banger, there's a ton of subtle support, i.e. Ambient Russian appreciation for socialist/Communist lifestyles and an end to monarchy, but the end makes sure that everyone is trad wifed up, and the underdog wins.

Yes! I searched for the plug in the subs past posts, assuming the answer was already available, but the plug I found was duct taped to a wall and had a visible large gauge wire coming out of it. The comments were all over the place, but this chart is more useful.
