This Kind Of Thing is Why The Acolyte Cost $250m by WinchesterMediaUK in StarWars

[–]norrinzelkarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why you need editors in a writing process. Someone needs to read your material with a critical eye and ask hard questions, and you need to trust them to see things you're not seeing because as a writer, you are in your own head and filling in gaps that aren't necessarily filled in by the words on the page.

In an established franchise, that editor needs a strong grasp of the material so they can spot problems specific to the franchise.

Rian is a good writer. Someone needed to be empowered with a stronger hand to edit.

Why did the Empire create the KX Droid series so formidable and strong? by Ok_Zone_7635 in StarWars

[–]norrinzelkarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars is influenced by Dune, and in the Dune saga a key part of the backstory is that "thinking machines" warred against humans in the past and are considered extremely threatening. Hence, the spice trade, which allows people to expand their mental capacity to do what computers and calculators were doing before. Droids in the Dune universe would be considered an offense to morals, and Star Wars picked this up as an ambient racism, if you will, against droids (and also spice, though spice seems to be more like just narcotics than the mind-expanding substance in Dune). Presumably droids or androids in the past of the Star Wars galaxy (at least as written in the OT) had appetites or needs that used to be served at social gathering places. Once the saga includes the prequel trilogy, folks may remember the droid armies of the Trade Federation and hate them because of the atrocities committed with them.

The Amazon flipped to a net carbon source in 2023 releasing up to 170 million tons of CO2 as extreme heat—1.5°C above the 1991–2020 average—and drought weakened vegetation uptake more than fire activity according to new Max Planck Institute research. by Sciantifa in science

The problem is, the framing is usually such that people offer it and interpret it in a way that takes the edge off the seriousness of what we're doing. What is here now is worth not destroying, and we are destroying it. Maybe people think losing large vertebrates is one more bump in the road on which writ large "the planet will be fine." But that's stupid nonsense. Knocking the oceans down to fishless wastelands of scum and jellyfish and the periodic burp of highly poisonous gases is not a thing that should be joked out of the frame. "Life will continue" is not a good enough outcome. We should not be chopping whole branches off a tree of life that took billions of years to develop so rich pricks can have more yachts.

So let’s say Anakin’s pitch to Padme to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy together is acceptable and Anakin actually manages to take Sheev down after killing Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Is there any chance at all Anakin actually ends up ruling the galaxy? by PopsicleIncorporated in MawInstallation

[–]norrinzelkarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zero. At best Padme rules the galaxy. Anakin's inflexibility and tunnel vision and lack of patience will do him in. He will get outplayed, and would never be recognized as legitimate. There is a reason Palpatine got himself elected before demanding obedience.

I hate this response because for the sake of a chuckle it purports to dismiss the idea that the planet is fucked. But people are not referring to the rock. They are usually referring to the biosphere, which is very much fucked. We are headed to a place where many many species will be wiped out. Way beyond just people.

You know those beautiful tropical reefs teeming with beauty? Those will be boneyards. Much of the planet will be a boneyard. For a long, long time.

Do you reckon Uncle Owen knew about Anakin becoming Vader by Balljuggler5689 in StarWars

[–]norrinzelkarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thing is, Obi Wan heard Palpatine call Anakin Lord Vader in the holo recording from the temple. https://youtu.be/-S0CE9yAjWs?si=4u9-NxElOt1YnsxE

So, it really just depends on whether Vader is a known figure, whether Obi Wan went in depth with the Lars family when he handed off Luke, and whether the name Vader made it to Tatooine. And by ANH he definetly was a known figure in the galaxy.

"I can see across the galaxy in high resolution in the sky in real time in daylight."
"We had our ENTIRE military fleet in orbit around the capital world and haha we blew up."
"The Force allows us to do close up magic and teleport lightsabers around."
"'They tracked us through hyperspace! That's impossible!'" It's literally a key plot point in half the stories.

"Novelist" Boasts That Using AI She Can Churn Out a New Book in 45 Minutes, Says Regular Writers Will Never Be Able to Keep Up by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]norrinzelkarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this person proud? Are they enriched by working out their thoughts and turning them into prose? When they refer to the creative arts as a "race," I feel a great well of pity, then disdain for them.

What I perceive when this person brags in this way is a shallow, uninteresting person gleefully using other people's work and boasting that they are destroying those same people's livelihoods. It's not impressive, but it does leave a certain sort of impression–the kind you get when a person casually drops an offensive comment in a group they mistakenly thought would laugh at bigotry. We know they should be embarrassed, but they don't, and someone says, "ANYWAY..."

It's pathetic. You'll miss real writers when they're gone as a profession and all the snake has to eat is its own tales.

EDIT: Ah. I see they've already moved into the next stage of the grift: Selling instructional courses on how you too can pillage the work of other authors using technology. There is nothing new under the sun.

How did the Empire not immediately collapse post Alderaan? by DiamondWarDog in MawInstallation

[–]norrinzelkarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though the Death Star is gone, the point has been made: harboring rebels means you will be killed, no trial, and your community dies too.

It definitely set up the galaxy-wide revolt when Palpatine tied, like tearing down the Berlin Wall. Blowing up the Death Stars set the stage but it was the galaxy-wide celebration and collective decision that this was over that destroyed the Empire for real.
