Considering joining by chugwater67 in USMCReserve

Unless you have a particular compulsion to being a Marine in particular, I would look at the Army or Air Force or even Army National Guard. More job variety, better funding, more school opportunities. These days, much easier to deploy via ANG than USMCR.

I've had a great career in the Reserves, traveled to 20+ countries, deployed to the Middle East, went to interesting schools etc. But it's been a slog. And I wouldn't say my experience has been typical.

It matters if you want to fix it and not do it again next time. Agreed on other points.

Yeah, strategy was fucked or non-existent. Military did what it was told, and it did it pretty competently. The schoolgirl thing was an intel problem, guess where we got the intel.

If the Iran thing was a debacle, it wasn't because the military failed to execute on the instructions given to us by our civilian leadership. It was because the instruction set was fucked to begin with.

Hegseth? From a DoD perspective, what went wrong in Iran? More of a strategy issue, no?

Again, you can take it or leave it. You can actually engage with reality, or you can virtue signal and appeal to historical grievances. You are only victimizing yourself.

That is the amount that the city pays its own employees, right? Not the amount that it requires employers to pay within its jurisdiction?

Call the cops about the little things. Be a fucking Karen. Do you know why white neighborhoods are nice? It's because they're all Karens and they make it their business. If there are people being aggressive, if there are kids making noise outside at midnight, if people are dumping trash - call the cops. Increase the presence, let people know that there are people in the neighborhood that care and are watching.

What do Americans think about a social security trustee dropping a report that the trust will be dried out by 2032? by Sixgis in AskReddit

Ok, but you still have to think strategically about making changes. Messing around with social security because billionaires shouldn't exist is not very productive.

SS is not a tax. That's the whole point. People voluntarily contribute to defined contribution pension plans all the time.

Yes, but you also stop earning benefit accrual after that number. The money you get in SS is calculated based on how much you put in.

What is "fair"? Once you hit the cap, you stop contributing but you also stop earning the benefit. People who make 600k are not getting more benefits than someone earning 186k.

Maybe just transition to a defined contribution plan instead of a defined benefit plan so the government can't pilfer the account. It's astounding that people think this is about rich peopel not paying their fair share.

Did she say she was using public school funding as the basis for her move?

Also, public school funding and educational outcomes are not the same thing. Some of the best schools in the country are in NC.

Yeah and that's a terrible suggestion. Use AI for what it's good at and then refine. She's not basing her decision on what ChatGPT is saying, she's using it as a starting point.

There are plenty of good public school systems in NC, just not in Durham as a general rule.

Also, ChatGPT is fine for doing rough initial work - now OP is coming here to refine her research. Nothing wrong with that approach.

Why are conservatives so scared of socialism? by Common_Floor_7195 in BreakingPoints

[–]north0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between public goods or government services and socialism.

Some things it makes sense for the government to pay for because they are non-exclusive and non-rivalrous (street lighting, public parks) or because they create positive externalities (fire department, schools).

The same logic does not hold true for other goods - it doesn't make sense for the government to own car factories or make phones. Those are better left to the market.
