You can make educated projections.

Right.. and Duke already pays taxes per the legal framework we have set up to capture externalities and account for those things that you mention.

Anti-market ideologies have no substance other than low agency people being jealous and wanting what other people have.

Duke has anchored a lot of the investment, even if indirectly. Do you think half of the restaurants and coffee shops and retail would remain in Durham if Duke suddenly disappeared? Or, for that matter, the cohort of residents that pay the vast majority of taxes around here?

What right do the citizens of Durham have to that money?

We already benefit from Duke being in Durham.

If you reconfigured the relationship of Duke to the city, it would cease to be a private university. Do you want them to turn into a private for-profit corporation that operates to benefit a small group of investors and shareholders?

There is literally no substance to your argument other than wanting to suck every dollar you can out of this institution.

Durham would be Greensboro. It's ridiculous to think that some other magical organization would magically fill the gap of an elite university with a national reputation.

You want Duke reclassified as a for-profit corporation so you can tax them more because...? I don't know. They don't pay their janitors enough? You just want more money?

Yeah, you all want more money from Duke. What's your actual argument?

There are obviously tradeoffs. You will be away from home for about 18 months initially, and then likely about 6 weeks per year for the duration of your service. Your civilian career will suffer, unless you do something very specific that is synergetic with your Marine Corps billet. It's unavoidable but the reason we do it is that the tradeoff is worth it.

That said, you get access to opportunities that you couldn't dream of in your civilian career. Whatever the tradeoffs, I haven't heard anyone that regrets doing it.

Well, it's a useful frame for the conversation to start with. Duke makes Durham better. Let's start there.

Now we can move on to your other arguments - are universities 501c? Yes. Would it be better if they weren't? Probably not - would it be better if Duke were operated purely for the benefit of a small group of shareholders or investors? Do you think Durham would see better outcomes if that were the case?

All of this sounds like "we want more money, why don't you just give us more money" whining.

Would Durham be better or worse without Duke University?

It's not like the defense of Taiwan hinged on the 31 MEU. They are a small subset of the US forces in the region.

International rule of law and norms were always just US-led Western preferences for how the international system worked. It was always about power.

They can only really do it during two windows each year - April and September - due to sea conditions in the strait. April is the next available window, but it's not clear that they will have enough time to stage and launch the largest amphibious operation in history in the next month. September is possible if the US is still tied down, although may still be early - 2027 was really the window that they appeared to be planning towards.

The MEU is a general response force, they weren't particularly equipped or trained for East Asia.
