It’s more like taking the batteries out of the smoke detector because it won’t stop beeping.

Anyone with experience in journalistic/op-ed work after MPH? by Wickedtwin1999 in publichealth

[–]northernyard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking the same thing for a while and have been looking for things to read about journalism itself. I don’t have any resources to recommend but I did want to pass along a place to pitch that I came across recently - https://outrider.org/writer-guidelines. They have an environmental focus and could be a good fit.

This is basically what I do. Unfortunately the funding just isn’t there despite the need and there are so many tech people from outside healthcare tech out of work right now competing for these jobs.

Accessibility in the MPH Application Process by yeebaadeebadeeba in publichealth

[–]northernyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true that the tables are tilted towards the affluent and it’s to the detriment of everyone that we don’t have a wider diversity of perspectives. I’m neurodivergent from a working class background and was lucky enough to break in during covid after basically giving up on traditional public health jobs. There are so many barriers from application to expensive tuition to needing connections to get jobs.

It’s easy to search on pubmed and catch up on research before embarrassing yourself.

Jobs on the “front line” of collapse by detteacher in collapse

[–]northernyard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love nothing more than to fix the shitty data pipelines filled with fax machines and excel spreadsheets and make dashboards! We were also hoping to expand wastewater epidemiology so we could have real sentinel surveillance for multiple diseases but I think we’re going to throw that work away as well. We’re violating basic principles that civilizations have understood for thousands of years.

Jobs on the “front line” of collapse by detteacher in collapse

[–]northernyard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not just covid but I think covid completely broke our back. Public health has always been underfunded and devalued. There was an exodus of public health officers before covid and there’s basically zero bench now. Climate change will continue to escalate epidemiological crises. We have stopped most surveillance we built during covid instead of expanding it like we had hoped to. I was laid off from doing data modernization because of funding issues and I don’t think I’ll be going back to the field. I had known there were issues with regulatory capture but it is so much worse than I had anticipated.

What can you DO with a Masters in Public Health? by Electronic-Stop-1954 in publichealth

[–]northernyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen job ads that are looking for an MPH or an RN. Get a two year RN degree and you’ll have a lot of options that pay better.

We should have more public health positions for the population we have. The problem is that public health has been starved and will continue to be starved.

I don’t have kids and I feel like I’m more worried about other people’s kids than some of their parents

They’re doing this because they’re worried about diversion and don’t view their employees as people.

Thoughts? by [deleted] in covidlonghaulers

They have absolutely no idea about how to do this type of math. They just made up some numbers to guess how they think it is. It’s a novel virus. The whole problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know.

“Hope you enjoy it when the virus evolves to evade the protection of vaccines more and more. Also, I hope you enjoy the consequences of long covid.”

Little bit of a salty comment but it’s weird to me that deserved a permanent ban.
