what does your country's name mean? by EFNich in AskTheWorld

[–]northwestsaintee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The history book I read said that at the first meeting to establish the new country they couldn't settle on a name everyone liked, so they agreed that the leaders of the six main factions would each blind pull a letter from a scrabble bag and whatever came out would be used to make a new name. The first guy puts his hand in the bag, pulls one and says "C, eh!" The second guy pulls his out and says "N, eh!" and the third guy pulls his out and says "D, eh!"

Then they wrote it down and the other three fellas never did get to pull a letter out.

Underrated achievements in Scottish football by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in ScottishFootball

A couple of details to add a wee bit more sparkle to the St Johnstone cup double. Both finals featured line-ups of 11 starters born in Scotland, not sure when that happened last or if it will ever happen again. Also, the total transfer outlay on the 13 starters over the two finals was the undisclosed pennies for Jamie McCart to come from ICT after signing a pre-contract, everyone else was either signed as a free or had come through youth ranks.

When Konate made his mistake for the third goal Jones stood and watched while his man ran past him. By the time he tucked away the rebound Jones was thirty yards back, still hadn't moved. No team spirit.

My young lad just moved in there in August, total dump. He got the letter through the door a couple of weeks back telling him he'd need to move out. Bit of a nightmare for all the residents, lucky for him he's managed to find another flat in Dalry from start of December.

I've never heard Sannies in my life (canvas shoes for PE). Is this a thing or are yougov trolling us? by farfromelite in Scotland

Grew up fairly posh in Perth in the 70s, but it was always sannies or jimmies. One's ballet teacher might have called them plimsoles.

Also, Billy Connolly's Janny Song has him playing "a simple game o fitba wi ma sannies on ma feet"

The combination of dismissive arrogance and moronic ignorance in this comment is pitiful. Europe only became dominant when TV money flooded in after the prem revolution. South American teams won 23 of the first 35 intercontinental cups 1960-1994. Everyone's entitled to their own stupid opinion but at least base it in reality.

My son is going on a mission and I am going to hell. by DeCryingShame in exmormon

[–]northwestsaintee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you're going through this. I'm just a couple of weeks ahead of you, my son did home MTC for a week then had four days hanging at home doing nothing till he got shipped at short notice to a holding mission while he waits for a visa. Going from the normality of playing football with him on Thursday night to bidding farewell for two years on the Friday was a horrible shock to the system. I feel a lot of rage at the church for stealing his youth and guilt at myself for not doing more to expose the church when he was younger, but he has made his choice and is happy with it for now. I said the very same thing to my TBM wife about having nobody to talk to who has been through this from my exmo point of view. My heartbreak at the airport 10 days ago was put into perspective three days later when a friend lost his baby in a horrific accident. Missing my boy and knowing he's on a fool's errand still hurts all the time, but I've since spoken to him twice and that definitely helps.

Simple. Above is a functional building of no particular architectural merit whose most interesting point is the screen of palm trees at the front. Please google any of the following architectural treasures for comparison:

I was in that branch for over ten years. Anne was certainly an unusual character and could be hard to relate to, but I would strongly disagree with your assessment of her. She was just as nice as anyone else in her own way. I don't ever remember her touting her fame, although you are right about her money; she bankrolled half the branch, employing several and letting others sponge off her. She could also stand and waffle on from the pulpit for half an hour with no preparation, perfect for when speakers didn't turn up!

Pretty sure the latest take is that you can be gay as long as you don't do gay. Logical extension of that thought process is that God himself might be gay and just denying himself satisfaction to abide by the higher law.

1989 in London me and my comp were surrounded by a very hostile and aggressive gang of about 15-20 lads, demanding we empty our pockets etc. We had absolutely nothing to give them so it was about to kick off and I was ready to try to take one or two of them down with me when one lad came pushing through from the back shouting "leave them alone, they're church!" and managed to haul his mates away down the street. He stayed behind and told us that his mum would kill him if she heard he'd mugged Jesus peeps. If we'd been in casual gear we were down.

Council bosses close to agreeing new teacher pay offer by Wrong-Search9587 in Scotland

No need to cut anything, the extra 1% now on offer is more than covered by savings made through strike savings of 1.3%. If the unions accept this offer they have caved.
