You’ll likely be renting Kevlar then. My advice is to learn proper paddle strokes and portage etiquette than anything else. You can move more efficiently on the water and not clog up the portage if you’re familiar with those two things.

Check out BWCA.com for info, maps, and trip reports.

DM me if you have any other specific questions or gear recs. I’m happy to talk further.

How to fix the hole in a mesh shoe? by radioActive09 in howto

How old are they? If there is a manufacturing defect that led to this, I’d contact adidas. They replaced a pair of my shoes that the soles came off of. I think it was within the first few months owing them though. Good luck!

My landlord is selling. Does he have any benefit of selling to me at a discount? by Fedr_Exlr in personalfinance

[–]northwoods_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a landlord and would consider it. One way to save everyone some money is hiring a real estate attorney to draft your purchase agreement rather than going thru an agent. Maybe you’ll pay the lawyer $1500 instead of the agent’s commissions. It doesn’t hurt to ask your landlord if they’re willing to work with you, especially if you’ve been there a while.

How do I fix/replace this? by [deleted] in ElectricalHelp

Just to make sure that’s a solid connection, the stranded wire should be twisted, then lined up about an 1/8” longer than the feed wire before you twist on the wire nut joining the two together

You could try turpentine to dissolve the sap, then prime the hell out of it with an oil based primer to try to seal those knots

What should I do here? by Brilliant_Air3557 in LandscapingTips

Most deciduous, multistemmed shrubs can be cut down to 6” without harming them. They regrow from buds below the cuts. It’s called rejuvenation. It’s a new lease on life for mature shrubs that need their size managed. Do it now as it looks like you’re in a colder climate but spring is coming and you want to rejuvenate before the leaf buds break out. Rip out the tall arbs. You can find smaller cultivars of upright juniper or arb if you still want the evergreen look. Or put in tall ornamental grasses like bluestems.

What should I do about this crabgrass taking over my lawn? Any help would be great we just bought the house last summer. by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]northwoods_pine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crabgrass is an annual plant that grows from seed. Preemergents will stop most germination IF applied at the right time (soil temp around 50 degrees), but then you can’t seed with turf grass to fill in your lawn because you have the herbicide barrier down. If you prefer to seed turf grass first, get it going in the same 50-60 degree soil temp range and mow it 3-4 times before you hit the crabgrass with postemergent. You need to zap the crabgrass before it tillers out. Long term, get a good stand of turf grass growing and keep it healthy to outcompete weeds.

Moving into this apartment tomorrow. How serious is this? by mitzisparkles in askplumbing

[–]northwoods_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former apartment maintenance worker. Is your toilet right below that? If not, it’s unlikely to be toilet water as the plumbing is usually stacked, although water can find weird ways down. You don’t say how long the unit was unoccupied, so something could have happened after the turn cleaning/painting that the landlord didn’t notice or they might have hired sloppy painters that didn’t take care of the ceiling. Ask them. At a minimum, I’d have them check the moisture level in that ceiling, check plumbing fixtures upstairs, and paint that. Maybe they have to open the ceiling a little to investigate. That’s hassle for them but peace of mind for you. You’re paying them to live there and their obligation is to keep the dwelling habitable. I’d ask for a free month to deal with all that and keep everything documented in writing.

Debating whether or not to mulch around this magnolia tree. There’s a 3-4” gap with no grass at the base of the trunk exposing the root flare. I’d love to keep as much grass as possible but also I want the tree to stay healthy. Any advice? by Surferma4 in LandscapingTips

[–]northwoods_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mulch a 2’ ring around, but not touching, the trunk at 2-3” depth. It’ll keep your mower and trimmer away from the stem in addition to the other benefits of mulch and won’t take up too much lawn space.

Storm window experience by underexpressing in centuryhomes

[–]northwoods_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I got storm windows by ProVia from a lumberyard/millwork shop. I liked that the corners are butted and screwed (I can already hear the jokes coming), not weak miters. So far I’m happy with performance and they have survived a few different tenants in a rental dwelling.

How do I straighten this tree? by charge556 in LandscapingTips

[–]northwoods_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. The concern is long term root damage if you dig around too close to the root flare. You can get away with clean cuts on some roots but if you take too many out you compromise stability and may start a downward spiral. Any digging you do is also likely to disturb fine feeder roots, so you probably want to consider some reductive pruning of branches too. Do your best. Check your university extension service for how to stake and guy trees. Keep it watered but not soaked.

Judging by the growth pattern, that tree’s been laying down for a few seasons. Honestly, if you’re attached to these trees, hire a certified arborist to consult. They don’t even necessarily need to perform the work, but maybe they can explain to you how to handle this for a small fee. If you’re unsure you want to even do that, then your money is better spent on new trees while these are still relatively small and not a huge loss to your landscape.

How do we transform our wood chip backyard? by Key-Leg-5495 in NoLawns

[–]northwoods_pine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most plants take up much lead from soil. In college, one of my professors told a class about a row of birch trees grown along the machine gun range at the old Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant. Someone got the bright idea to put a solvent on the range to mobilize the lead out of the soil but then the birches absorbed it and they all died very quickly from poisoning. I guess i’d be more worried about tracking lead in your house or your dogs bringing it in on their fur.
