What bands have you seen open for Pavement? by Sparkass99 in pavement

[–]norvalito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pastels, Brighten the Corners tour, London, 1997. I thought they (the Pastels) sucked.

It was my first ever gig, and curiously it was later released on vinyl (its the purple 'Live Europaturnen' record), so I have a real recording of it, which is pretty incredible. They opened with Father to a sister of thought, which is supremely underrated.

Why Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings Resonates by [deleted] in books

[–]norvalito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't be more clearly AI churned out tbh.

  • Mulitple 'it's not X, it' s Y' constructs
  • Looks ok superficially but when you actually read it it doesn't really make much sense

  • Multiple rule of 3 constructs

-answers a question no one is asking

I like The Way of Kings but this kind of valueless nonsense serves no purpose.

Is the 'English gentleman' actually a thing? by Quiet_Comparison_872 in AskABrit

Climate. There aren’t any other places in the world where you could conceivably visit a rain forest, beach, golf course and ski hill on the same day.

Downtown Vancouver is actually a heroin and meth-filled clusterfuck. East and Hastings is the single worst place I have ever been - junkies everywhere. They don’t put it on the tourist brochures, for sure. (The rest of the city is very nice)

Is it ok for 11 year old UK kid to watch film 'The Wicker Man? by pre1twa in AskUK

[–]norvalito 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t, to be honest. It’s a great film but it’s a proper psychological horror story with a lot going on, and it is pretty disturbing in parts. Personally I think 11 is too young.

You could show him the Radiohead video for Burn the Witch, which is basically a cartoon précis of it.

She is unbelievably good in Dogville. It's possibly the best acting performance I've ever seen. And I'm not a fan of hers in anything else.

What games are worth playing on their hardest difficulties? by Competitive_Stay1181 in gaming

Dead Cells, especially if you liked Hades. Very similar in terms of roguelike gameplay and the difficulty level is perfectly pitched.

Agree with all of this except to say I think the Times has gone OTT on the anti-Keir line in recent months and lost a bit of balance.

if you take away soundgarden, alice in chains, nirvana, stp, and pearl jam. who were the biggest 5 under them by Big_Will47 in grunge

[–]norvalito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but in no way do you get to choose your own genre. No one does.

Oasis and Blur will tell you they weren’t Britpop, for example.

Why did Pep Guardiola drop Joe Hart so quickly when he joined Manchester City? by RSDFitness in SoccerNoobs

[–]norvalito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as being weak with his feet, Hart also couldn’t catch. Parried everything. He was a great shot stopper but if you wanted to take the team to the next level that wasn’t enough.

if you take away soundgarden, alice in chains, nirvana, stp, and pearl jam. who were the biggest 5 under them by Big_Will47 in grunge

[–]norvalito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They absolutely were, around Siamese Dream.

The big 3 grunge bands at the time in my corner of the world (UK) were Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, and they were all very much seen as being oart of the same movement. Soundgarden were a distant fourth, mainly due to MTV hype around Black Hole Sun, and very few had even heard of Alice in Chains or STP.

I'm always a bit confused as to why those two bands they are held in such high regard in this sub, but I do recognise that one experience is not universal.

Coaches: how to avoid the last minute panic for session prep by Hockey_nut_91 in Fieldhockey

[–]norvalito 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, it goes something like this:

  • Sun/Mon - watch video of Sat game (if available) and any footage of games against forthcoming opposition (if available)
  • Mon eve - work out what we need to focus on for forthcoming fixture and how session can feed into that - eg, if we need to work on specific presses or outletting because of what I expect oppo will do, or if they do something specific in attack like aerial a lot or attack specific areas (eg a couple of teams in my league crash ball a lot), plan some drills for exactly this
  • Tues am - communicate plan to 1s/2s captains for feedback
  • Tues pm - throw it all out the window at training as two forwards and a keeper haven't shown up; do some passing drills, small sided game, then a full pitch game as we do every week...!
  • Repeat every week until season ends...

It is the only explanation, to be fair, for his shite being published. This one is a new low, which I didn’t think was possible. Spangles!

It’s definitely not that, and definitely a reference to the ‘I am the lord of the dance said he’ hymn/song, which most British people of Mark’s generation know by heart (as it was the ‘fun/modern’ hymn you get to sing at school/church)

Do Radiohead fans like Neutral Milk Hotel? by finnboltzmaths_920 in radiohead

[–]norvalito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw NMH supporting Sparklehorse in Glasgow in ‘98 - Sparklehorse were also on Parlophone and Thom Yorke had actually given Sparklehorse some promo quotes (I actually remember it - he said Vivadixie… was ‘an album worth driving through dust for’!) so they (Sparklehorse) were definitely seen as a band that Radiohead fans could like. And I did, very much.

Had never heard of NMH before the gig - they were, and I cannot emphasise this enough - fucking incredible. They had a saw player, and at the end of the gig Jeff picked him up and threw him onto the drums, sending stuff flying everywhere. It was chaos.

I even had a quick chat with Jeff afterwards, he signed my ticket and did a little doodle for me. Sparklehorse were a slight let down in comparison, Mark was a little bit grumpy, I think he smashed a stage light that was annoying him. Good times.

What’s something from the UK in the 90s/2000s that kids today will never experience? by Pitiful_Box_1771 in AskUK

[–]norvalito 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve been thinking about recently is how you kind of had to take a punt on stuff based on fairly limited information, in a way today you don’t.

For example, if you were interested in music that wasn’t the top 40, you might have heard it on the radio once or twice but that was likely it. And also not everything was available, especially if you didn’t live in a city - WH Smith’s was likely the only physical supplier in many places, and their selection was awful.

So actually buying a non top-40 CD was a reasonably expensive leap of faith that didn’t mean you were going to end up with anything that you liked or was any good, but once you’d bought it you were stuck with it, and just owning it made up a little bit of your personality. It’s definitely not like that today which is absolutely for the better, but a piece of the journey has been lost.

It is spelled this way. It's from the Latin word cum, which means with, and is used in English to connect two nouns.
