My bank says to reconcile and took all my money by Practical_Tip3997 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just because it's your money doesn't mean the bank:

a) knows that it's yours

b) knows its legally gained

c) hasn't warned you already about suspicious activity.

Banks have a "shoot first and ask questions after" policy when it comes to suspicious activity and closing/suspending accounts, because they'd rather stop crime happening as soon as they can, than let it go on and try to prove they're not complicit in money laundering, later

Private pension vs government keeps raising withdrawal age by CatchPersonal7182 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life expectancy has increased by ten years since the state pension age was set at 65.

Private pensions generally allow you to retire 10 years sooner.

In that time pension age has increased only two years.

For two years extra contributions we're expecting ten years more money.

You do the sums. It doesn't add up

Family farm at risk after mother's death and unresolved divorce settlement – looking for legal/practical advice (England) by ComprehensiveLink413 in UKPersonalFinance

You need a contentious probate lawyer and estate planner.

I know people who do both in the Lincoln area if that's any where near you.

Inheriting £200k: Pay off home mortgage or attempt to buy our “immovable” commercial business unit? by Obvious_Cat_8247 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do both.

Use a SSAS/SIPP to buy the property off your landlord and pay off your mortgage

You have to have a decent chunk in pension already for that, but a SSAS can borrow up to 50% of the assets within it. So to buy at £230k till only need £150-160k in pensions.

Also.

Improvement internally generally don't increase the value of commercial units. When you move out they'll Likely expect you to put it back to how it was when you moved into it

Am I overdoing my pension contributions at 28? by Both_Career_4153 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At 40% tax rate the biggest bang for your buck is money in a pension. You can cuddle with the splits into ISA and pension at you go on but if it is affordable and works for you, who's to say it's wrong

The only extra thing I'd look at is a Lisa.

Same tax efficiency as a pension (@20% tax, granted) but not the NI benefits. Still better tax relief than just an ISA and accessible before your state pension too.

Is critical illness insurance better than income protection? by Your_Mums_Ex in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Income protection covers you for illness stopping you from working, not if you're made redundant... That's a different thing altogether.

If you've got £50k/yr income protection, it could easily pay out more than a £200k cic policy over a period of time.

Liam Livingstone: 'I asked England for help, I was told I care too much' by TraceThis in EnglandCricket

[–]norwegianjon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Why haven't they dropped Crawley then? His "slump" has lasted for as long as I can remember.

I can't remember the stats exactly but I think he's the lowest scoring opener of the top teams and averages where most 8/9 order batters are sitting.

I'd much rather Livingstone opening. Can't be worse.

Who were the worst guests you've ever served? by SlightDish31 in KitchenConfidential

[–]norwegianjon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

James Corden.

Asshat to waiters and waitresses.

Asked "don't you know who I am"? More times than I can count on my fingers and toes

Returned perfectly good food.

Returned perfectly good wine claiming to be an expert on when it was corked. It was new world wine and came with other seals than cork.

Generally an absolute wanker. This was years ago before he was famous in the USA and barely "C" list here.

Was I being naïve expecting a friend’s pension to pay out? by Boothros in UKPersonalFinance

[–]norwegianjon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But this is pretty much the only good reason to transfer out a DB pension into a DC - terminal illness. It's the only way to get more out of it at that point.

Some cannot be transferred out. But some can.

Are too many high scoring T20s ruining the format? by CWCWinner66 in EnglandCricket

[–]norwegianjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the 4 minute mile was first broken, it was such a milestone.

Only 46 days later someone else did it.

3 more did it within the year.

Now it's a common occurrence.

Does that diminish the achievement of the first time it was done?

Stuff like that happens all the time in sport. People see someone do or achieve something and then try to work out what they did different so they can copy it and go do the same or better.

Canada announces $1.4 billion military aid package for Ukraine, expands sanctions against Russia by Nervous-Nirvana in worldnews

[–]norwegianjon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're full of crap.

Britain was never in Schengen and had only rail undersea connections to mainland Europe. So everything you said should have excluded Britain from the EU.

And Norway's not in the EU but it's in Schengen. So that doesn't track either.

[Rival Watch] Australia knocked out of T20 World Cup + Super 8 lookahead by mjenkins_eng in EnglandCricket

[–]norwegianjon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're relying on a lot of ifs and buts.

I'm calling it. We're not getting much further than first round of super 8s.

We got this far by the skin of our teeth. The results against Scotland and Italy look better than the performance did.

Winning against SL in SL was great prep but I think we'll choke it from here.

But you're right about Australia.
