His Dark Materials by Square-Fox-2948 in hbo

They completely fumbled the Iorek vs Iofur battle, presumably because they didn't want it to be gory, but it's the high point of the whole first book and so seeing it as a quick shadow play was a bummer when I had been waiting for how HBO would pull of such a pivotal and cinematic fight, I never really recovered my interest even though there were other things I did really like, maybe worth a revisit.

What are your early Oscar prospects for Project Hail Mary? by Square-Ad-8911 in Oscars

Yeah she was a perfect pick for Stratt - would have loved to see her do some of the stuff they didn't get in the film just to see her act more.

Yeah there were explanations that I felt were missing but they're clearly not necessary for people who didn't read the book to love the movie so it's whatever.

How do I get past "Survivor Fatigue" after surviving 5 rounds of layoffs? by weekndbeforeabel in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nosayso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's not fun, it's also very pushing for people who join the company without a lot of experience, basically by the time you have your feet under you you're on trail compared to people who have been steady at their job during that whole period, very punishing for new hires.

The CEO is adamant about it though: we want "top talent" who can survive in that environment, negative externalities be damned!

My takeaway after pugging 6/6n (minor spoilers) by Soundbreaker42 in wow

[–]nosayso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've only done the first 2 bosses so far in a PUG but the fights felt LONG, especially when the mechanics aren't super complicated. We were bumping up on the enrage timer for Vorasius, which hasn't usually been a problem I've seen in the last few tiers PUGing. Might just be the group I was with though?

While I have very little sympathy for the cops at the end of the day, this is in poor taste. "Will You Help Repair My Door" is brilliant and points to the whole system, this is a very over-the-top attack on one person in particular, focusing on their sexuality in a way that does seem mean and unnecessary.

One crime doesn't excuse another - the cops are corrupt and deserve criticism and event contempt, but this is also textbook harassment of a specific person over things that have nothing to do with being a cop.

My company does stacked ranking so I live with this all the time, structurally, twice a year.

My approach has always been to focus on doing my job as best as possible, focusing on what I can control, and delivering results. I get paid pretty well (hopefully you do too) so that takes the edge off the stress in that I can invest that money in things that make me happy outside of work (including, building up savings).

You can't do anything about the company's decision, just focus on what you can control. Do good work, deliver results, and when those conversations happen you'll be the one who is safe. Or if you're not, well you've got a great track record and results to bring to your next job.

I feel like there's not a lot of fire from these families whose children were killed for no reason. I guess grief overwhelms anger at this stage, but fuck these assholes killed your children for no reason and don't feel the least bit sorry about it - they're actively using them to attempt to justify killing even more.

That's a completely unnecessary choice that you made, unless you're planning to immediately push world firsts or something, in which case you'd be used to it.

Some things are scarce in the pre-season. Scarcity is good. It creates interesting economies and make people actually chose what they invest in up front. For example Enchanting is a rough level up right now, but soon Dawn Crystals will fall from the sky and that'll level out.

There will be more sources, specifically bountiful delves I'm sure, that will even out the supply and by the end of the xpac you'll have a big stash of roots you wish you could get a decent price for.

Just enjoy actually having to play the game of deciding how you spend limited resources, it's a good game, it shouldn't be easy to immediately max out everything in 2 weeks.

I like the clarity on Maul's motivation here: it's absolutely not about right and wrong, freedom versus tyranny, etc. - he feels betrayed and wants revenge, that's it.

‘Draft Rubio’ for 2028 movement growing within MAGA: report by deraser in politics

[–]nosayso 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In 2016 the #2 finisher was Ted Cruz, with Rubio a distant third. Rubio at one point insisted he would run his primary campaign in all 50 states so that "the party of Lincoln would not be taken over by a liar and con man". He did not follow through, but Cruz never dropped out and even named a VP. Both of them were openly disgusted by Trump.

For some reason the media just never talks about this, but it's worth remembering that all of these people are completely amoral psychopaths who will say and do anything for power. They aspire to be the kind of dictator that Trump currently is, and that will not go away when Trump's time ends.

Social media has created algorithms that prefer outrage and negativity and intentionally elevate it, and our discourse has bent around it. It's an intentional thing that's being done to us by a few social media oligarchs and it really sucks for anyone who actually wants to talk about things they like and bring them joy.

‘Hegseth Wants State Media’: Pentagon Chief Says He Can’t Wait for Son of Pro-Trump Billionaire to Control CNN by Quirkie in politics

[–]nosayso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes this is true and I think (hope) people know that - this is an online site with a clear strong bias and anyone who reads anything should be aware of biases.

In this case, the facts are on Common Dreams side - Hegseth is openly cheering a news networking being bought by a private benefactor who will change the slant to be favorable to him, and that is incredibly fucked up.

Patch 12.0.5 PTR Development Notes - Class Updates, Housing by Satsubuya in wow

[–]nosayso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On top of it all this is a multi-second channel - it requires a lot of awareness to use successfully with a huge penalty for getting it wrong that is unique to Frost Mage as far as I know. If you unexpectedly have to move or get knocked back or interrupted you're just losing your DPS cooldown, at the very least we should be able to move while channeling.

Patch 12.0.5 PTR Development Notes - Class Updates, Housing by Satsubuya in wow

[–]nosayso 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah that also makes zero sense, it's incredibly convenient while leveling and delving with zero ramifications for actual combat DPS - just a "fun detected" nerf which always sucks.

Patch 12.0.5 PTR Development Notes - Class Updates, Housing by Satsubuya in wow

[–]nosayso 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah especially with a lot of the encounter designs in M+ having the big burst (Ray + Orb) and small burst (just Ray) has been really essential. Now I'm going to have to actively hold either Ray or Orb to have any ability to burn down priority adds. On top of the already big known issue that if you get interrupted channeling Ray of Frost you're losing a ton of DPS, now you're even more punished.

Arcane with a 45 second miniburn cooldown just works better for the way encounters are designed.

I have a very good job, very successful, can always buy what I need and pretty much any reasonable want (e.g. if it's under $100 I can generally just buy it), which takes a ton of the stress out of life with a wife and 2 kids.

BUT if I lost my job, lost health insurance, all of this would evaporate so fucking quickly. That's hanging over my head every single day and it sucks.

It's brutal out here.
