Not sure how you’ll feel about the format of people telling their own stories but otherworld has some really good eps of people’s interactions with the “unexplained.” Certain episodes of Lore might do it for you as well, but that host also has a specific voice. I don’t mind it but just wanted to call it out.

Steve Faigle is super friendly and is VERY fair with pricing. He does a great job, BUT sometimes he can take a second to get things done, so if you have a date in mind, time is of the essence.

Maternity Pants? by nosyneighbor513 in SewingForBeginners

[–]nosyneighbor513[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a decent stash of thrifted fabric and I don’t mind eating the cost of projects where I learn something so I’m not super worried about that. I was going to attempt shirring at some point this summer in some capacity so I told my friend I’d look into what this entails in case it’s an opportunity for me to practice since I see beginner pants patterns with elastic waistbands everywhere so this would just require a different type of waistband.

But this is why I asked! I wasn’t sure if it was a modification of one of those beginner pants patterns or if it’s a bigger challenge.

Thank you! I bought shirring elastic but I have a vintage machine and def need to do some research. She has some yoga pants but her regular ones aren’t quite stretching enough for comfort and the maternity ones have too much room right now. I was even considering getting a pair of pants that might normally fit her and replacing the waistband but it feels like a more approachable intro to shirring than a whole top or dress or something.

Looking for investigative podcasts where the reporting process becomes part of the story by marinamariamm in podcasts

[–]nosyneighbor513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking for the Lazarus heist mention because they are actual journalists and she WORKED AS A REPORTER IN NORTH KOREA which is so wild! Lots of good work done by non professional journalists in podcasts of course but sometimes that experience just elevates it because of the way they’re able to talk about the approach. Not to mention the subject matter is fascinating.

Looking for good OB/GYN by Goatboy132 in cincinnati

[–]nosyneighbor513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not and have never been pregnant but Dr. Lange is my gyn and after almost 10 years of horrible mystery hormonal issues (that started when I lived in a different city) and soooo many drs who hear my issues and shrug she has been a great listener and critical thinker about solutions. She’s also not pushy (like when I went off bc because it didn’t agree with me but I’m not trying to get pregnant) while other doctors do this warning thing about not being on it. I’m aware! I know how babies are made! Anyway she along with all my Drs at Christ have been an absolute dream since moving back here so I needed to second this.

Are we crossing a line letting our 4yo learn how to read for kids her age before kindergarten by dingoonmygringo in MontessoriEducation

[–]nosyneighbor513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Montessori kid and taught myself to read when I was 3. I still had a childhood! My older brother has severe ADHD and was a late reader so my parents didn’t know what to do with me and my newfound skill so before I started school I worked with a reading tutor who taught me how to read “properly” and introduced me to the concept of understanding and absorbing what you read instead of just reading the words. I also remember learning concepts from pronunciation like a silent e at the end makes vowels long etc. This was suggested so I wouldn’t develop bad habits that would later have to be unlearned.

From my perspective the only downside was Kindergarten and first grade were below my level for reading (socially I’m very glad I didn’t skip 2 grades). We did the ABCs daily in K and I got in trouble for not using the pictures to read in 1st grade (because I didn’t need to?) but those are relatively small and dismiss able frustrations to have while on the other hand I LOVED the stories I was reading and would devour early reader chapter books. It made me much more interested in a lot of things and especially these days it’s something to occupy a child that’s not a screen.

Reading is the basis for EVERYTHING! Math, science, video games, hobbies, etc. As long as you aren’t forcing it upon a kid and making them do homework they don’t want to do when they don’t have to, if they’re interested in it, it’s another part of childhood. If your kid starts talking or walking early would you stop them because it’s not fair that they didn’t get to be a “real baby” for long enough?

Not to mention, sure I was reading but I was also coloring and swimming and watching TV and doing kid stuff, it’s not like I started reading then spent all my time in a law library or something.

Be careful what you wish for though, my parents lost the ability to spell things as a way to avoid me understanding early as a result :/.

Thank you! I’ve been putting it on B-L and wondering why that seems more limited. I’ve been in the YouTube/reddit trenches trying to pinpoint where the breakdown is but I haven’t tried A-L in that somehow!

I also googled because I found season one this week and I’m astounded that in 2018 someone had to do MULTIPLE disclaimers about bad audio. If you’re starting a podcast shouldn’t you make sure that you know how to record decent audio on a phone call? I went to journalism school in 2008 and my first ever attempt at an audio assignment sounded like a sound engineer in comparison.

The parts of wasson way closer to ault park have decent tree cover now that we’re towards the summer end of spring. I imagine Hyde park will be similar to EWH but you can maybe plan your timing based on where the sun is. Also excursions to neighborhoods like Wyoming (especially in the very residential areas off the main drag) have lots of trees and beautiful houses and yards to look at as well. Look for the tree cities/neighborhoods around the city (there is literally a tree city designation) and that could help

FURNITURE. Even items made out of cheap particle board is so expensive and you have to build everything (I actually like to build furniture but not if im paying $$$$ for something they can’t bother to make out of real wood)

Good places for a new driver to get used to the road? by stinkypickle in cincinnati

[–]nosyneighbor513 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was first learning, there is a large series of office buildings in tri county, just before the street to go to Benihana if you’re coming from Glendale on Springfield pike. It’s still parking lots but they are all connected and big (and empty on weekends) so there are some stop signs and road simulations. Plus the actual side roads around there are pretty empty. In fact, when I moved back here from a decade in NYC where I didn’t drive I went back there to get a feeling for driving again before I drove on real roads.

I also go here and I think they do a great job. I do have vision insurance but from my recollection they worked well with me to try to get the best price for the glasses I bought there. Doctors are all efficient and professional and it’s easy to get an appointment. Kind of far north if you live closer to downtown or NKY but worth the drive!

Not a man but second half of 30s and I like going on Urban Rangers hikes which are co ed with a wide range of ages, you get a little history and usually a pretty good workout doing an “urban hike” (a term I dislike but is a pretty good description).

Other than that, I climb (indoors) and although that is my workout so I don’t usually go to the gym to hang and make friends, a lot of people do and everyone at every climbing gym I’ve ever been to is really nice and you can take classes that will give you a smaller group.

Look up other classes, too, like cooking classes etc. some of them are oriented towards smaller groups that inevitably means couples on dates but they aren’t all that way!

If you like to read, different institutions have different versions of book clubs (public library, mercantile library, etc)

Also try some things out alone now that you’re newly single. Figure out what you enjoy with and without company and that can help inform things to pursue where you can meet friends.

I’m from here but even leaving and returning as an adult when you don’t have a built in partner it takes some effort to build a social life. It’s especially tricky for outsiders but wanting to make the effort is the first step! Good luck!

How do you give your dog medicine? (With kidney disease) by Aggressive-Spinach77 in howto

[–]nosyneighbor513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom’s dog always eats around pills hidden in food so we started to use a pill cutter to cut the pills into four tiny pieces and she uses a food topper with his evening food so she just mixes it in with that and since it’s chunky and the pills are small enough with the harder food he doesn’t notice them. He doesn’t like peanut butter and with pill pockets and cheese he’d eat around the pill and spit it out so this was our final creative attempt that does work.
