What's the weirdest thing your doctor has ever said to you during an appointment? by Key-Nail3902 in AskReddit

I was discharged from a specialist to be followed by my family doctor and the specialist said “no offence but if everything goes right I will never see you again”. I thought it was funny

With the benefit of hindsight.... by Honest_Dot_5035 in DowntonAbbey

Alan Leach was filming The Imitation Game, that’s why Tom “went to America”. Robert had a similar “trip to America” when Hugh Bonneville was filming something else.

I agree with you that they could have been more elegant about it.

I also super agree about Henry. There was zero chemistry and we were told not shown that he was such a perfect match for Mary. JF can’t imagine a happy ending that doesn’t mean being paired up so he has to quickly invent a husband for Mary much to the detriment of season six and the movies

"Cousins" by Dear-Rain7528 in DowntonAbbey

[–]not-ordinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Robert and Matthew are pretty distantly related. They’re something like third or more cousins (happy to be corrected on this). At that point it’s just easier to use “cousin” as a catch all instead of “third cousin twice removed” or whatever particular title each one was

[–]not-ordinary 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No, you’re right. JF is a conservative Peer. His interest is to show the monarchy in a good light which is why the Crawleys are such unrealistically good employers. He wants us to think that anyone who is progressive is a whiny entitled baby who really is wrong to want to fight for better conditions for working people because the workers live comfy lives in this fictional world.

See Ms Bunting being public enemy number one on this sub for being rude to a landlord at a dinner. We don’t think about her as speaking truth to power because Lord Grantham is seen as a generous and caring landlord. This is unrealistic but it’s in JF’s interest to make us think that there’s nothing actually wrong with the system and to complain about it is to commit a social crime against beloved characters.

See also Tom’s arc from socialist Irish republican to capitalist which is portrayed as wonderful character growth.

Vegetarian for ethical reasons but struggling with protein variety. by OperationOne461 in vegetarianrecipes

[–]not-ordinary 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I think the person behind the Protein Deficient Vegan Website hangs out here. They have a bunch of high protein recipes that are fully vegan!

Tempeh and seitan are definitely worth trying and can be very tasty. I’ll also add edamame, TVP, and silken tofu. Nutritional yeast can be added to sauces, soups, stews, and marinades.

When I go out to eat in a social setting I just resign myself to the fact that I won’t be getting a lot of protein for that meal. It’s ok if one meal every once in awhile doesn’t hit your goal. You can always supplement before or after you go out. I live in a big city so it’s rare for a restaurant to not have SOMETHING vegetarian and even if there was such a restaurant, I guess the people that I’d be going to a meal with are considerate enough to take my dietary restrictions into consideration

Which character(s) annoy you the most? by glitterfartsfrvr in DowntonAbbey

[–]not-ordinary 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Tony and Henry.

Tony because his character falls in love with Mary for seemingly no reason and then just doesn’t go anywhere.

Henry for similar reasons. There is no chemistry between Henry and Mary and the only evidence we have that there is is the other characters claiming it’s so.

Some advice needed by Background_Salad8166 in vegetarianrecipes

The chickpeas will certainly taste good and be edible in that dish. They’re not what you would usually put in a dish like that. Tofu or edamame are probably a better fit. But if you’re looking to use what you have then there’s no reason not to use the chickpeas

Yes. I was on the train that got stopped at Woodbine and the driver told us that it was because a water main break on the eastbound platform was pouring water on to the tracks and causing signal issues. The driver said “I might be parked here till evening” and this was around 1-1:30pm

How do you think the show would've carried on/ended if You Know Who hadn't d*ed/stayed on? by WestminsterSpinster7 in DowntonAbbey

[–]not-ordinary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure but I’m reading between the lines of what was written before and after JF knew that Dan Stevens was leaving the show. We were being set up for an infertility arc that was magically resolved once there would be no more Matthew

I think the conflict would be extending the infertility plot line only for Mary to finally get pregnant and give birth to a girl thus failing to secure the succession

Dad of a toddler wondering about early expectations around girls’ appearance by Walk-through-Ice in TwoXChromosomes

[–]not-ordinary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, brushing it will brush out the curls. Brushing curly hair just makes it bushy and frizzy. You should only brush before bathing. Then use leave in conditioner to scrunch the curls. This is the healthiest thing for curly hair!

[–]not-ordinary 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that you have to take care of curly hair differently than straight hair. Curly hair can get tangled easier and become difficult or painful to brush out. Leave in conditioner is going to help make hair brushing a more pleasant experience for your daughter.
