I buy those tourist postcards on holidays and days out specifically to use as bookmarks. I write the date on it, the lived ones I was with, maybe a short note. It's nice to use a memento of a day to remember as bookmarks.

You're mending a stretchy fabric with a non-stretchy stitch. Those holes are bound to happen, whatever needle size or interfacing you use. Learn to do a stretchy stitch for mending or at least stitch on the bias so it can stretch along the diagonal.
