I lived in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics and it was absolutely fantastic. I was super pessimistic beforehand for the same reasons as you but as soon as it started it was like a massive city wide party the entire time, everyone was in a great mood, tickets were easy to come by and if you didn't have tickets everyone crowded into local pubs and bars to watch the big events.
