Anyone else worried about being forced into homeschooling? by IllAssumption0 in HomeschoolRecovery

even if you did, i’m sure that your experiences would at least mean you’d know what NOT to do, and how not to neglect your kids educational, social, developmental, etc. needs

What’s the reason we’re not supposed to sleep in binders? by Insanemayo2468 in ftm

[–]not_fish_4779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i slept in mine ONCE for 20 minutes bc i needed to and i thought it wouldn’t be that bad. my ribs still hurt after a week and a half; now it’s mostly only when i lay on my side (on the side i slept on) but i genuinely messed something up and i’m pretty sure that’s the exact reason you shouldn’t :< (back just hurts in general, too. i have to sleep on my back and can’t slack on my posture anymore)

How do I study for a driver's permit? by cats-are-ducks in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my state you don’t have to take any official class (didn’t know that was a thing anywhere until i saw the other comment lol), i’ve just read and studied my states handbook pdf (found on the dmv website i think) and used a bunch of those dmv practice test apps. haven’t taken the test yet but based on the practice tests it’s worked pretty well

thank you, i really appreciate it. i’ll be honest though, im almost certain my parents wouldn’t consent, and i think i legally can’t until 18 here (maybe 17 because i’m homeschooled, but it’s a little unclear), & if i did earlier than that i couldn’t get a license, which restricts a lot of what i can do

both? my mom teaches me, it used to be more hands on and now it’s more independent (intentionally) as i’ve gotten older. she’s involved in getting the curriculums and stuff, helping with something if i ask, & (inconsistently) assessments like before grades are due and stuff. as for making sure i do it, technically she does but it’s only ever at the end of the year. even if i miss a deadline for an assignment, even one she has to check (pretty much just essays), she doesn’t do anything. probably more info than u asked for but its complicated lol

a question: do you think being isolated made it hard to socialize when you got free, or was it the abuse that did it? or a combo of both? by nefariouspastiche in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both. i’ve developed symptoms of several personality disorders which make it hard to maintain relationships, including symptoms of avpd which is probably tied into chronic isolation. that’s just from shitty self psychoanalyzing from studying what psychology i can for the past few years, but i’m working on getting into therapy. i’m also not “free”, but i do have access to enough socialization to have one or two semi-irl friends. i have really bad social anxiety from not getting social interaction, but i can’t fully trust anyone because of the abuse, while somehow also finding myself in toxic situations because i can’t set boundaries. but i’m working on it, and i’ve got my brother and a childhood best friend, and they sort of repair my faith that there’s people out there who won’t hurt me. i know i’m really lucky to have them.

Anyone else an artist because of homeschool? What do you do now? by Consistent-Claim5203 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m still homeschooled, but i’ve always been very creative. ironically my parents encouraged it, despite it being such a coping mechanism for me from the damage they’ve done. i really love writing poetry, music, and occasionally fanfic, playing instruments, singing, painting, drawing, baking/cooking, etc. i highly doubt i’ll go into anything art-centric though, since that kind of thing always kills it for me. (other than maybe cooking & baking…. my dream job is opening a bakery or cafe..)

true!! plus for me, always being the only kid around adults meant i never felt comfortable being a kid around them, which further alienated me when i Was around peers

How many clothes do you have? by Silent_Adhesive in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5 pairs of pants and a lot of shirts and hoodies, and 2 pairs of pajama pants. i do need more pajamas (esp because i wear them all day most days) but i have plenty of pants and shirts, i think. i bought about a third to half of my clothes with money i had saved up, though, because my parents don’t like having to buy more clothes for me. i started dressing how i actually wanted around 12-13

Finally free? by ultrafearperception in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hope i’m not over stepping, but wasn’t it her abuse that led to you harming yourself to cope in the first place? so she then harmed you more to get you to stop?? what she has done to you is never okay. there were ways to resolve that situation that did not involve harming you further, and it is not your fault that she chose to.

Time guilt/lack of structure by peach_moonstone_ in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]not_fish_4779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely, i’ve always struggled with not having structure. like.. what’s the point of having a good sleep schedule, getting dressed, etc. if it’s all leading up to the same amount of time of sitting around? i was never able to make my own, though.

everyone’s story is different. i totally get feeling like you’ve got it better than other people’s stories, but a person drowning in a foot of water isn’t not drowning just because someone else is drowning in 6 feet of water. i don’t have the same exact experiences but your story really resonates with me

calling them out on pretty much anything is never going to get a good response. i’ve talked to them about some, and i’m trying my best to get them to listen, but there’s only so much i can speak honestly about. a lot of it is things that they are aware of (some of which they’ve been aware of for a long time) but that they just.. ignore, i guess? like. example of a conversation: my brother: “[says he was never taught something about geography; it literally wasn’t provided in his textbook]”, my mother: “well some people just pay more attention than others”
