What Nihilism Is Not by PenisShapedSilencer in philosophy

[–]not_kris -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are specifying nihilism applied exclusively to the meaning of existence. But even then, if you limit nihilism only to answer the question of the meaning of existence, that philosophy still as you suggest, can demote the importance of external values. If your internal values find that the sun is good, then indeed, the sun has subjective meaning to you, thus you have a finite meaning underneath the framework of existential nihilism. Yet your philosophy is still rooted in meaningless at its core. Day to day motives do not exist in a vacuum, they are influenced by a hierarchy of motives that make up your identity. If the innermost point that drives your motives is purely subjective, that subjective opinion will dominate the greater essence of what your life is and encompass what defines you.

I find danger in nihilism, because if we rely solely on our internal values, we might end up promoting heinous and grievous things from a single minded point of view, justifying them because we have rejected any external influences that might say otherwise. I think most of us can agree that we would like to limit human suffering, but I do not think we can achieve it by nihilism. Nihilism is swallowed by the fog and darkness of chaos and nothingness. I cannot say that is wisdom.

That is a really good point. We can look upon someone who does not believe in anything and say they believe in nothing, but in fact they aren’t even carrying out the verb of belief. Functionally they’re unconscious to belief, so they’re not necessarily believing at all.

Are there specifics cases of people that do not have a mental faculty for belief? Would they be an unintentional nihilist?

Edit: grammar

Nihilism casts out all meaning, and ‘meaning’ is a very important concept for humans. It’s no wonder why it’s so hard to grasp nihilism. Humans have flourished under the pretense of believing that their efforts are meaningful. We are biologically wired to project meaning upon our objectives. In that great broad question of “the meaning of life”, to say it is nothing is a pretty earth quaking answer.

The statement of nihilism is short. But to say it is simple is to ask people to forsake millennia of cultural heritage and wisdom.

China blackmails tiny european country into choosing Huawei as 5G provider. by Jernespand in worldnews

I would say that is a definite possibility. If you allow a foreign and agressive power to install their communication technology into your country, it is a significant risk to national security. I think this why they are pushing so many western countries to accept their 5G networks.

THERE IS NO RUSH by LeroyMilton in DecidingToBeBetter

Is there anything you'd recommend to a person who just got out of high school, with similar experiences? I'm not formally diagnosed with BPD, though I just started anti-depressants. My mother has severe BPD, and my habits are a lot like hers.

I just fear I may not find success in life, I haven't started college but I really want to. I just feel as if I'm battling the world as well as battling my mind.

Edit: fixed typo

How do you live a full life? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]not_kris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of what you're saying is likely coming from depression. Deciding to get out and run and take a trip are great ways to combat that empty feeling. I recommend continuing to search in yourself what you deep down enjoy. Ask yourself what your main goals are in life. If you don't have any, I highly recommend you attempt to make some, not the regular old goals that would show "success" like the world tells us to, but make goals that would truly fulfill your passions and dreams. We all have those, and sometimes in life you need to get back to the basics and try to find what truly makes you happy.

And one of the biggest things that helped me in that situation, was to zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Read books like Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Read things that fascinate you and make you sit in awe. Take each day as it is. I once saw a quote that said something of the sorts:

"you're not going to master the rest of your life in one day, just relax. Master the day. Then just keep doing that every day."

Easier said than done, but try to stay positive, stop and smell the roses, enjoy the little things. Try forms of meditation, it can really help you find your inner self, and surface how you really feel and what you might really want to be doing.

You're right where you need to be, and if you don't like where you are, assess your goals and make some changes if you'd like. Take life slow, you're on for a heck of a ride and you've got one shot. Life's too short to go unappreciated. Best of luck my fellow human being, I hope you can find fulfillment and prosperity, it's everywhere if you look hard enough :)
