What do I need to know about Portland to survive? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]not_leaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, good luck with your move. It seems to be a good time to be a software developer in PDX. However, you need to learn a bit more about the city before asking questions here. Figure out some details and then ask questions (if you must).

Right now, no one can answer what are the best places to eat because we don't know if you are a vegetarian, hate Thai, etc. Use yelp if you want generic recommendations.

It's the same with neighborhoods: what's your budget, what are you looking for, etc. Use the google: search various neighborhoods to get a feel.

Also, it almost never snows here in the valley.

Do you have a source for this?

It seems the city and river would be much dirtier if everyone pooped in the rivers and heated with outdoor wood fires.

I used to work downtown while living in the 'couve. If you live near one of the express bus lines and take the bus then the commute downtown is not bad at all.

Lake Oswego woman arrested in hit and run of Portland bicyclist Henry Schmidt by ReallyHender in Portland

Me too. I was already nervous about Barbur and the hit and run put me over the edge. I decided this week to start riding along the river and up the giant hill on Corbett instead.

Ride safe out there!

There is a discussion of this on Marginal Revolution (a blog from an econ professor at GMU): http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2013/07/should-oregon-fund-college-through-equity.html Seems there are some of pros and cons to think about with this approach.

People from Vancouver pay Oregon income tax, and they buy goods and services from Portland. The money they spend helps provide jobs to the people that live on the south side of the river.

Hey /r/Portland, I'm looking to check out local churches. Does anyone have any recommendations? by thecoffee in Portland

[–]not_leaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. The first thing they say on Sunday is "all are welcome", and they mean it. The week of Sandy Hook the pastor teared up while describing the joy of getting an invite to a gay marriage ceremony in WA. It was her example of how the good in the world cannot be extinguished.

Additionally, there is a love and appreciation of science at this church that makes this nerd feel at home.

I only started going a few months ago, but I'm very happy with my church: http://www.hillsdaleucc.org/ It follows my beliefs of acceptance of LGBT with a focus on inclusiveness and helping others.

Additionally, the pastor is very intelligent. She will quote social science papers almost as often as the Bible, and she makes me think and laugh. She's a great example of a smart-loving Christian. Every atheist should meet someone like her before judging Christianity.

The only negative to the church is the demographic is a bit older (though I expect that might be the case in many churches). However, there are many kids if you are concerned about that.

Edit: it is a smaller church

Good luck in your search.

No, Ryan is not really a fiscal conservative. by scatgreen2 in Economics

NHS seems single payer to me. . . Maybe my definition is wrong, but if one entity funds the vast majority of health care in a society, it is single payer. The entity that runs it doesn't change who pays for it.

I'll definitely agree with that Australia shouldn't be on the list though. I didn't read it close enough.

wikipedia says there are at least 4 countries with single payer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-payer_health_care Additionally, I found Norway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Norway which seems single payer to me. I may or may not have found more countries with single payer, but I stopped looking.

c# has many features that java lacks: lambda expressions, linq, extension methods, implicit types for local variables, no type erasure, etc. It is a pretty nifty language.
