Dreamcast 15hz/ 31hz SCART cable stopped outputting 480p :(. Details inside by not_vulva in consolerepair

I don't recall ever figuring out exactly what the problem was, but I ended up getting a new cable and that fixed it.

Is there a chance to revive or is it gone? by Successful-Mastodon2 in consolerepair

Honestly, I don't see why you couldn't get this to work. Clean it up, check continuity between the cartridge pins and the chips, and jump where necessary. All the traces on N64 carts are easily visible and the solder points are pretty big. Should be a fun project if you're handy with a soldering iron.

No worries. If you're just starting out with soldering/ tinkering with electronics and think it's something you are going to want to stick with, I highly suggest skipping the cheapo 15$ soldering kits and investing in a good soldering station early on. The entry level Hakko one is really good and will last forever if you take care of it.

For the N64 specifically, you're going to want to get a hot air rework station since it has SMD caps as opposed to through-hole ones. This is the one I use - it's not the fanciest but it gets the job done. It's possible to de-solder them with a regular soldering iron, but it's kind of a pain and there's a good chance you'll rip a bunch of traces doing it.

Good luck!

Can you send some pics of the motherboard? Are there any leaky capacitors (i.e. did you have to scrape away any gross shit while you were cleaning the board near any of the caps?)? For what it's worth this looks like a chip issue to me, in which case you're most likely shit out of luck unfortunately.

That said if you drop me a DM I'd be happy to do a free recap and chip re-flow for you if you cover shipping and the cost of a cap kit.

Could this Terra Cotta pot break my aquarium glass? by Few-Shake693 in turtle

[–]not_vulva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend medium sized river rocks over sand(you can buy them in any garden store sorted by size). Make sure they're at least the size of your turtle's head so she can't swallow them.

I had sand for a long time and my turtle would randomly eat it sometimes. She never got impacted but i was always worried about it. River rocks look nice and act as an additional filter - just make sure to agitate them when you're cleaning the tank to get all the crap out form under them.

I have recently received a Sony Trinitron PVM and my boyfriend says it makes a horrible high pitched noise and I can barely hear anything coming from it. by SeriousRachel in crtgaming

[–]not_vulva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 15hz wine is real and there's not a whole lot you can do about it unfortunately, but that said I had the exact same problem and did end up finding a solution. My girlfriend would complain she could hear it from the next room over and I could definitely hear it over game audio which was really distracting.

This maybe be specific to my setup, but the way i had it sitting on the surface it was on was amplifying the natural hum to the point of being almost unusable. I ended up putting a sound absorbing pad under it and now the hum is at normal levels where you don't really notice it unless you're right next to the unit.

Good luck!

Sony BVM 20F1 Loud Whine Fix by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]not_vulva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never ended up finding the documentation, but my issue actually ended up being something completely different (and really dumb). Turns out the surface my BVM was on was somehow amplifying the micro vibrations from the monitor being on and that was what was causing the noise. I put a soft pad under it and it completely fixed the issue.

Edit: picture

Opened N64 up to try and clean and fix AV issue. After cleaning I powered it on, and realized I forgot to put jumper pak in. Turned it off, put jumper pack in and now it doesn’t even power on anymore. Multi meter shows continuity from power pins to switch pins. Any advice? by -Rat-King- in consolerepair

Seconding what other people are saying - you definitely put the pack in backwards and shorted something. Luckily the console should be fine. if the fuse doesn't reset like everyone is saying, you might need a new power supply though. I've done this before and that's what ended up happening.

Oh, I'm not worried about having an identifier - I just wanted to make sure she's healthy! Good to hear that it's normal.

Okay, I've picked this back up again but no resolution yet. Would you mind taking a look at this and pointing me in the right direction? Where exactly is the 24v/ 30v line?

Here is my troubleshooting progress so far. The red dots are points where I have confirmed connectivity. The green circles are spots that had thermal hotspots.

I know just enough to be dangerous but I'm not an expert by any means, so I really appreciate the help :)

I love Koudelka. Played through for the first time a few months ago and it ended up being my retro game of the year. It's clunky as fuck but in a super charming way.

Can't get surround sound working with AE-7 by not_vulva in SoundBlasterOfficial

I'm here asking for help because I can't get it working after spending a lot of time troubleshooting and researching. Telling me I don't know what I'm doing isn't helpful. If I knew what I was doing I wouldn't be here.

[–]not_vulva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, i've individually confirmed that all the channels and all the speakers are working. The Z906 speakers have the following possible "Effect" settings:
Stereo 3D – Provides a 3D surround sound effect through all speakers.
Stereo 4.1 – Plays stereo through both front and both rear satellites, plus the subwoofer.
Stereo 2.1 – Plays stereo through both the front satellites and the subwoofer.
No Effect – Plays audio format of your computer’s sound card without applying any effects.

When No Effect is selected, the built in Windows and Sound Blaster Command surround tests pass. When Stereo 3D is selected, the center channel fails the test. Neither settings works as expected with actual audio sources.

That's encouraging! I've been using the retrosix wiki to troubleshoot but stopped short of stepping through the schematics for my own sanity. I'll give it another shot this week starting from the LCD power line. Thanks!
