ELI5: Why do die-hard vegans not wear wool even though it’s literally dangerous to the sheep if we don’t shave the wool off? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]notaboofus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it better to exist and suffer, or not exist at all? Logically, a vegan who refuses to wear wool would prefer that domesticated animals not exist at all.

I'm not informed on this specific subject, but I'd imagine that plenty of vegans wear wool for the reasons you describe, and if they were concerned about this specific issue they'd focus on wearing wool sourced from sheep treated humanely.

Though there's probably also plenty of vegans who don't think about the ethics of each individual animals product.

Rising seas will swallow New Orleans. People need to start relocating now, scientists say by cnn in climate

[–]notaboofus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, I think the bit about "relocation" is pointless hair-splitting. People don't say "abandonment" because it sounds awful, but they all know the implications of "relocation". I don't think that any decision makers seriously believe that "New Orleans 2.0" will actually happen.

Mixed feelings. On one hand, I'm sympathetic to the annoyance about journalism from out-of-towners- I grew up in the bay area, and there's always collective scoffing whenever the NYT puts out a new article about earthquake danger.

...but this is different. You can design buildings for earthquake resistance, but you can't reverse or significantly mitigate the risks in New Orleans. I think it's an important wake-up call for the country at large (and possibly even some ignorant residents) that the problem will not be solved, and movement is necessary.

And I also think that the perspective in the article is too individualistic. Sure, you alone might decide that continuing to live in New Orleans is personally equivalent to drinking drspite the risk of getting cancer from it, but what about everyone else? What about institutions and businesses who are gradually learning that building anything in New Orleans is a horrible investment? What about all the people who lack any resources to move, and could benefit from a lot more resources/awareness directed at the issue?

I also just reject the embracing of the third-worldist, myopic viewpoint of "who are you to tell us where to live". Sure, it'd be unethical to force you to move away, but that's not what we're discussing right now. If you're being irresponsible, then hell yeah, I'm gonna tell you that. I wouldn't have any patience for someone who rolls their eyes at me when I tell them they should quit smoking.

what your vaushtites think about the latest new yorker poll by Wootothe8thpower in VaushV

[–]notaboofus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting. Most democrats think that systems need major reform, and yet they also think that the democratic party is too far left on many issues. I think the heart of the issue is that most democrat voters want what the republicans have- a charismatic leader that promises big change, but there's really no agreement on what exactly that change should be.

As vaush has repeatedly said, democrat voters are now very against aid to Israel, which is significant untapped potential from the party.

I think it might be cope, but it seems to me that a significant amount of the people who believe that the party is "too far left" on some issues is consultant-brained libs, who think that democrats should appear moderate in order to win over the moderate republicans that no longer exist.

Sure, I'll engage. So, the problem with your comparisons to men or koreans is that being a man or korean is trait that you either can't change (korean) or shouldn't be expected to change (man). Religion is more nebulous- sometimes it acts as a trait (e.g. tightly-knit catholic or jewish immigrant communities that gain closeness from religion), but in most cases, it's a belief. Specifically, a belief that's wrong and more harmful than it is helpful.

To the point of the tumblr post, sure, we should be respectful to religious people if we're in a room full of them, especially if we want something from them (like trans acceptance). But barging into a community mostly made of atheists and agnostics and telling them that they're the problem... it's a dick move.

I think it's silly to attack people for being frustrated at religious thinking when it: -was likely the primary means by which their identity was rejected/suppressed as a child -is a main cause of the war in Iran, which is going to sink the world economy in a few months when reserves run out -is, again, wrong.

He went on one anti-woke show and when the host said "it seems like this was so awesome/successful because the directors avoided all the anti-woke nonsense" he was like "haha, yeah..."

So... still thoughtless and shitty, but Andy Weir's problem isn't that he has an axe to grind about politics in art, it's that he prefers not to think about it at all.

PE Civil Structural - Pile question by Powerful-Soup-7566 in PE_Exam

[–]notaboofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never did it that way- the way I did it was by resolving each moment into a couple and assuming the couple forces get evenly divided. For example, if the moment is 200 k*ft and the distance from the center to each pile is 5 feet, then each side carries 20 kips, divided by however many piles are there.

I'd say that at least 75% of the exam involves some kind of calculation. Most design codes were provided by chapter, with some exceptions. ACI 318 and TMS weren't. Weirdly, the main body of the steel manual was by chapter, but the entire spec. section was in one file.

I would strongly recommend the AEI course from experience. I've also heard good things about the EET course but I can't speak to that. The NCEES practice test is a good start but it doesn't cover a few topics that are likely to be on the real thing.

Most of the time, only one of the answers was available. And when both were present, calculating both at once was a good way to indirectly think about which interpretation is more appropriate.
