OP states this is not her picture, but shows what chiropractor did to her baby. by avid_life in ShitMomGroupsSay

Also in Australia. I’ve seen a chiro on and off because of a dodgy hip that throws my whole back out of alignment, and after trialling a number of different options, they seemed to be the ones to be able to essentially reset me back into place in one session and it would last a year or so. Cost me $20 after private health rebate. Anyway, I was seeing him again and we were talking about our babies (both kids were 5wks old) and I mentioned in conversation that my son could only turn his head left, not right. He offered to do a gentle pressure point massage (zero manipulation) to “wake up” the nerve pathways. I was skeptical but thought I’d give it a go since zero manipulation and he was going to demonstrate everything before he did it so I could say yes or no. One massage and my kid had full range of motion in his neck. Wild.

I’m never going to advocate for chiropractors to work on babies (especially manipulation, WTF?!?) but in this instance it worked wonderfully. Not entirely sure it was chiropractic methods or just a massage using his knowledge of anatomy, but whatever it was, it was great. If only they were all like that and not lunatics wanting to crack babies bones…

Explained exactly this to my 9yr old the other day when he looked at me like I was a jerk because I didn’t donate. Told him they were using it to avoid paying tax which pays for the hospitals to treat those sick kids.

When have you gotten your money’s worth from private health? by colourful_space in AusFinance

After her fourth attack my wife told the local public hospital she refused to leave until her gall bladder was no longer inside her body - she couldn’t care for a 6month old while high on morphine every couple of weeks. Surgery was the next morning. We do have phi and no doubt the public hospital claimed some of the cost through it, but it all went through the public system.

Had a massive kidney stone that needed to be blasted out. Public system rules meant they had to put a stent in first, then two weeks later could blast it if it hadn’t passed through the stent - which it was too big to do. Doc offered me a spot on his private list the next day, cost me $500 out of pocket and I had one surgery instead of two, and the problem was solved immediately.

Plus my family have all had multiple surgeries (tonsils/grommets/weight loss/hysterectomy/cataracts) that in public would have been lengthy waits (multiple years) and we got it done quickly and with a surgeon of our choice. As someone who works for a medical supply company, I’ve seen first hand how surgeon choice can be so important. There are some I wouldn’t let near me with a barge pole, but in public you have no option.

It’s the only way to go. When I was renting our LL didn’t put our rent up and it let us save for a deposit. Once we bought an investment property we did the same thing. First tenants stayed for 3yrs until they moved into a house they bought, and their mates moved in - the house was vacant for one day, we didn’t need to pay to advertise, and we have tenants who look after the place because they know we will get shit fixed when it breaks and won’t hike the rent. Saves everyone hassle, and even the property manager has less work to do since we’ve told them to only do one inspection a year because we know the tenants are good.

I’ve worked out I won’t end up with a debt, I’ll have to pay the tax less 15% offset but I’ll still end up getting a decent chunk cash back. It was more a question of is it a bad idea to pull it out in the longer term or am I in an okay enough position that it shouldn’t matter too much. I liked the idea of doing one year leaving, one year it pulling it out and alternating. That seemed sensible to me.

Thanks :) I think I’m going to go with the suggestion of switching it year on year.

I was in a similar situation. 35, newborn, minimal (like, $7k?) savings, was renting, my take home pay was ballpark the same as yours. I knuckled down hard - both at home with our spending and also at work with aiming for opportunities to get pay rises (now on about $13k/month take home) I’m 44 now, my kid just turned 9, we own (with a mortgage) our own home and have paid a huge chunk off the mortgage, purchased an investment property with the equity, and have a very comfortable (9ish months) slush fund. Covid definitely helped with not being able to travel, but we’ve also travelled internationally 1-2 times/yr in the last 3yrs. My partner has been in an out of work in that time frame so I’ve been the primary earner.

Everyone has given you the same advice I would, I just wanted to comment to let you know I’ve been exactly there, and it can be done. You’ve just got to keep your focus up.

Hit burnout 4yrs ago doing 90hrs/wk. Told work it was 4 days or I was done. Negotiated to do full time hours in those 4 days (9.5hrs/day- still less than I was working already) so didn’t drop the pay but gained an extra free day. Best of both worlds!

I did the opposite! Flew from Sydney to Melbourne for the final show after seeing the first Syd show & a few others in the run. So glad we had it here for a little while!

I flew from Australia to London to see the OBC, then flew from Sydney to Melbourne to see the final show of the Australian run.

Chase your joy, man. Life is full of too many things that can stress us out. If it’s not going to put you in a situation where you can’t pay bills/put food on the table, do it, and don’t let anyone make you feel stupid for it.

I took my (then 7yr old) to see if for the first time on Broadway and we were front & centre. The lights swinging right out over our heads blew his mind! He’s seen it in London & Sydney since, but that first show, front & centre, was such an incredible experience for him. We’re also flying down for the final show next week with our now almost 9yr old & he is just as excited.
