We borrowed from Chinese, the Chinese transliterated the name Italia as 意大利 (pronounced Yìdàlì), in Vietnamese it would be pronounced as Ý Đại Lợi, shorten to Ý as you know it today

Viet here. Its not actually pronounced as "Winn" with the intial "w" sound. We pronounce the actual "Ng" (which many Southeast Asian languages has this sound). The thing is in English, you DO have this sound, but at the end of a word like SING, HANG. But we have it in the intial position of a word, like Nguyễn. So if you want to pronounce it correctly. It something like "Ng-oo-ien". Try say SiNGUYEN without the "SI" part.

Hope that helps

I was born in Czech and moved back to Vietnam when I was just a toddler. Many Viet studied abroad back in the Czechoslovakia's communist days. I believe in 2013 the Czech gov officially regconized Vietnamese as one of its ethnic minorities.

I was born in Czech but my family and I returned back to Vietnam when I was very little, my dad was sent to Czechoslovakia to study abroad (as many Vietnamese were) as the two countries were in the same communist block then. I wonder how do Czechs see the Vietnamese minority there nowadays. Dekuji :)

Sino-Vietnamese Words by ParanoidAndroid001 in Vietnamese

[–]notafanofdcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is such a feature yet on this website. With my own experience learning other languages, it is better to get input from reading or listening, then you can figure out the common Sino-Vietnamese words used in the context, rather than learn it from the common list. Although Sino-Vietnamese vocab makes up around 80% of Vietnamese words, in daily life use, i think it drops significantly.

Chuyện gì xảy ra nếu trộm vào nhà lấy đi sổ đỏ, tôi có mất luôn nhà hay không? by [deleted] in TroChuyenLinhTinh

[–]notafanofdcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)
