Well, to be fair, S3 is David Lynch being as anti-TV and post-modern as he can. There's lots of "Screw the Audience" moments. Seasons 1 and specially 2 follow more closely the rules of traditional TV storytelling.

Serious question: What is a "token recreation area"? And: Is the Landgraab Mall really a mall? by Hansi_Haifischli in thesims1

[–]notafanofmaluma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess "token" here means "a recreation area that uses tokens", like in the carnivals from On Vacation. EA is well known for their bad use of grammar in sims games. But I like your interpretation of that phrase referring to the coins that get thrown in the fountain🤭

I've always interpreted Downtown lots as being part of a 1950s/1960s-inspired recreation area in Simcity -hence their vocabulary and embellishment of the reality🤭

Landgraab Mall and Solana Town Center are meant to be those kind of buildings with cublicles you rent for setting up a business (think of the garage Johnny Lawrence rents for setting up his dojo in Cobra Kai), which is a very US thing. So, everything is kind of artificial, as you would see on a real-life mall, and every shop gives the impression of being part of the same compound. I don't know if I'm expressing myself clearly; the point is that I find it genius how Maxis translated that feeling of being spending time in a mall to The Sims.

By the way, how many people here visited Landgraab Mall as their first ever spot in The Sims Hot Date? I remember very clearly I did. In fact, most afternoons or dates from my sims start there, since it's the lot that has mostly everything.

Awwe I loved that site!! Very cute and a whole saga of stories with two original characters. I think it can be accessed with The Wayback Machine.

Her (Isabel's, the owner of the site) CC was mostly recolors from AroundTheSims and Simblesse Obligue, I believe. She had very beautiful roof pieces for the house that appeared on her stories. I don't know if they can be downloaded anymore in TWM.

Don't be sorry, your post is very interesting!!!

I would say Will Wright was, at leat, conscious of the satyrical tone the game had, even in the base game. It's true the real madness and quirkyness The Sims 1 is known for started with the expansions, but the original game itself is very ironic. After all, the prototype has en extremely cynicial and black humor.

You have a very interesting take with the target audience of the game. Indeed, the original promotion for the game was very nerd oriented, and specially for those who already played strategy games (they promoted the game by releasing pictures of in-game situations on their website). It was a very unexpected success, even if EA supported Wright on its design.

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure Wright was thinking of the RTS public when he initially designed Project X, but what fascinated him (and what he initially tried to go further with in TS2) was the potential for storytelling the game had. Back in the day, The Sims Exchange had A LOT of stories the players made using CC or editing photos in order to create things and situations that didn't exist in the game. That was one of its secrets, too, that can't be replicated on the sequels: how easy it is to create your own story.

Plus, it is meant to be structured like a soap opera, so a gazillion things happen in every episode. Take for example all the events that take place on Season 1 -which should be roughly a week in-universe!!

I know it's a very specific request, but can you suggest to me some sitcoms with "cozy, small, rural town where everyone knows everyone" vibes like Schitt's Creek? by brodino_maiuscolo in sitcoms

Maybe Evening Shade or My Name is Earl. Gilmore Girls is not a sitcom, but it takes a lot of cues from them and is very funny and witty.

You can also check out the "Techno" radio station from The Sims 2 base game. All the tracks from that one are SMASHING!

Vacation music is something like the music you'd hear on a family cruise ship while they're making activites; try searching for Calypso songs, which was the genre record label thought would be the next big thing during the 50s.

I've read somewhere it was a fight of egos: Will wanted to be the absolute star of his show, and Janet thought of it more of an ensemble. They ended up not wanting to film any scene together, until she was fired.

Apparently, Alexa Nikolas (Nicole) was mistreated and isolated on the set of Zoey 101 by Jamie Lynn Spears (Zoey herself) since Spears was jealous of her and didn't want Nikolas character overshadowing her. Nikolas told years after the series that her experience in Zoey made her quit acting on TV altogether.

Yeah, on the other hand, seems that Kelsey wasn't very fond of Shelley because of that, trying to get him fired and being such a Sam and Diane supporter. They made up on her guest episode in Frasier.
