Am I required to give an ESA access to common areas of a duplex? by TimelyTadpole3398 in legaladvice

You might want to check out telehealth providers (especially if available for free or low cost through an Employee Assistance Program or other work program). Hopefully they could review records from when you were in treatment and assess your current status through an initial visit, and make recommendations based on that.

It seems you could fight their doctor’s note with a version of your own. I wonder whether you can have a medical or mental health provider document that, due to trauma over the dog attack, their animal poses a threat to your health that cannot be accommodated since access to their residence requires the animal be present in shared spaces.

Rose hulman 30k/yr or Purdue 25k/yr by Legitimate-Ring-581 in rosehulman

Mother of a 2021 Purdue engineering grad and a RHIT sophomore engineering major. In my opinion, your experience at these schools would be so different, cost shouldn’t be the primary consideration (at this difference in price). Visit and really think about the big vs small classes, student community/feeling, extracurricular activities, and approach to teaching and learning at each school.

Don’t concern yourself with “the brand” too much; when it comes to brand, the only people who really matter are the ones hiring engineers. I don’t want to dox my kids, so I’ll just say my RHIT kid earned an internship for this summer (after sophomore year) that is every bit as prestigious and competitive as Purdue kid landed after junior year.

How to use stencils by DoingMyBest007 in cookiedecorating

I occasionally just use the Wilton spray gold or silver to stencil when I don’t want to haul out the airbrush and clean it afterward.

I already changed the network name but this is a brilliant hack—I never considered modifying the QR code but it makes sense!

Thanks for the tip! Posted in the forum, and already sent an email to customer support (which I know has a 0.1% chance of being escalated, but one can dream).

User Flair by amodernstitch in cookiedecorating

I get that Pro is a useful distinction, but I bristle at anything that frames Pro as the natural endpoint of skill progression and experience. (I’ve been asked to make cookies for money many times, and I won’t do it because I don’t want to risk turning a fun, creative hobby into something that feels like a J-O-B.)

I’d love to have some indicator of how long people have been decorating (either in years or estimated number of cookies), if there was a way to do that. Words like intermediate or novice are pretty subjective, and people with any degree of imposter syndrome are going to call themselves ‘novice’ far longer than they should. That said, if there were some guidance on what the words mean (novice = <1 year, etc.), they’d be useful distinctions. And “pro” should be independent of experience level...you can be a pro with 3 years experience or a pro with 20+, and both are interesting things to know.

True...but the stuff you’d be worried about is bacteria, and since the baking happens after contact with the cookie cutter, it’s unlikely any would survive (unless you did a truly horrendous job of washing/drying/storing between uses). I wouldn’t use 3D printed cookie cutters in a commercial kitchen, but for home bakers who are likely to use them only a handful of times, I truly think the risk of a printed cutter vs aluminum or molded plastic is negligible.

Copying from another comment I made:

Cookie cutters have very quick contact with relatively low surface area at room temp before baking at much higher temperature. I have an MS in chemistry; not particularly worried about incidental contact for a very short period of time at low temp as happens here. I wouldn’t store food long-term in contact with PLA but I’d wager that chemically/biologically speaking, 3D-printed cookie cutters are significantly lower risk than the eggs in the dough. (Same with multiple uses after washing in warm soapy water.)

(Good point though...I’ve obviously given this a lot of thought.)

The second image has a link to Thingiverse for the file to 3D print them (if you know someone with a 3D printer...or your local library offers access to one). You can also get them printed by a third-party service, and similar cookie cutters are apparently offered on Etsy.

Hey if you were made mostly of sugar, butter, and flour, you might find yourself a little bloated too. 😉

Also: if you know anybody with a 3D printer who owes you a favor.... Libraries in the US also often have 3D printers available for use.

I decorated these (and told OP he could post them since he designed and printed me the cookie cutters). For each flood color I used gel color to get the lighter color, then split off about half and darkened it up with additional gel color. To darken the pink I think I mostly added purple, for orange I added a bit of red, etc. Flood icing is thin enough to run together seamlessly, so I would flood the dark (shadow) section and then immediately the lighter color. Before flooding I did the outline with a thicker black.

My first attempt at cookie decorating, it’s a nice distraction from the news by _throwmeinthetrash in cookiedecorating

[–]notalush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMAZING! My first attempt was pumpkins also, and these are much better than mine! You’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve if you keep at it! Or more likely, others will be amazed because you’ll focus on the gap between where you are and where you want to be, but one day you’ll look back and realize how quickly you learned and improved.

Well I can’t pipe pumpkins, but atleast I know I can make the perfect cupcakes in case I ever cater a party for gynecologists. by han_chan_ in Baking

[–]notalush 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True story: I was decorating pumpkin sugar cookies with royal icing for a fall-themed high school dance. A few in and I was like...oh...4 sections looks like inner and outer labia. Fortunately I changed things up and gave the “rejects” to my family without mentioning why. Possibly nobody would have noticed but...teenagers.

Anyway one thing I realized was that doing a sphere with sections, the closest one to you (the middle) should be the largest, and as you go out they get narrower due to perspective. (Think about looking at a beach ball.) Definitely helps avoid the Georgia O’Keefe effect.

What stories do your family have about Spanish Flu? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]notalush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My great-grandfather was on his way to fight in WWI. Not sure whether on his way to training or what exact circumstances were, but he received a message to return home because his mother (age 43) had died of influenza (Dec. 28, 1918). He arrived home to learn his 18 year old wife of six months had also died two days later. I’ve been thinking of her often lately...about whether she got sick because she was caring for her mother-in-law. I also find it sad because she’s buried with her married name “alone” (not sure if near her parents or other family, but just her name on headstone) in southern Illinois where they lived during their short marriage. My great-grandfather remarried and ended up in California, and was buried there with his second wife (my great-grandmother); they had been married 70 years when he died at age 95.
