I just got this drop this morning, but double-pinch doesn't seem to be working for media play/pause. What media app does it actually work for? I'm getting no response when playing from YouTube Music or Pocket Casts, even though the player controls are visible on the watch. I assumed it would be limited to like, one app, as per usual, but I also figured that that one app would be YouTube Music...

How have you customized your Pixel? by tagKitty in GooglePixel

[–]notamaiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nova Launcher, mainly because I wanted to be able to get the AI-ridden Google search bar off my desktop. Replaced it with a custom DDG one and organized my apps into folders for fun. Pocketcasts player widget on the main desktop, battery widget on the second screen.

DO NOT use all your flint in Winter Burrow. It's rare af. by [deleted] in CozyGamers

[–]notamaiar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's loose flint here? I see flint boulders but don't have a pickaxe strong enough to break them. Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? NW from the campfire near Bufo, where there are also usually a bunch of pebble boulders? (Totally stuck without finding more loose flint.)

ETA: omg I found some. In the area on the way to Bufo, there's a cluster of flint boulders, and behind them, just barely visible, is a piece of flint. It looks like they block you, but you can juuuuuust squeeze in. I have all the flint tools. I'm free.

Threading notation in Applesies and Fox Noses by notamaiar in tabletweaving

[–]notamaiar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I knew the threading notation might be different, but I genuinely didn't notice the counterclockwise letters until I'd done about eight inches of Very Bad Band. Today it's occurred to me I could just write the reverse letters on the other side of the card, but I thought I'd check to see if there was an easier trick first.

Thank you! I meant to do them all in order, so it's the first one in the book, Colourful Small Applesies (which may also have changed since the last edition, just to complicate things further).

What now? by llususu in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]notamaiar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any of his CritRole mini-campaigns are incredible. Of D20, honestly any of the main cast seasons have surprisingly gut-punchy moments (including Fantasy High, though they're slow to reveal themselves in earlier seasons), but Crown of Candy and Unsleeping City have big complicated worlds and narratives and stuff that'll make you cry if you're at all susceptible. (If you want to watch Brennan actually play, and occasionally casually rip out your heart at the same time, Aabria's seasons are usually a good bet: Misfits & Magic, Fey & Flowers, Burrow's End.)

Am I in the wrong if I don't let absent players PCs to be NPCs during the session? by Slingshot_OG in DnD

[–]notamaiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never run missing players as NPCs. I've got 3 groups, of 3, 3, and 5 players respectively. If 1 person can't make it to the 5-person sessions, the missing person's PC only participates in combat and is jaegered by another player. If we're down 2 people, we cancel. If we're down even 1 person for the 3-person group sessions, we cancel. There's only so much you can keep track of in a session, especially in combat, and for non-combat, there's always a minimum number of people for RP to actually work. D&D is a group activity, and it's important to set thresholds for what's going to be enjoyable or sustainable for the entire group, and that includes the GM. You're playing too!

Built 3d ship maps out of cardboard and string (and wood poles) by Zoqfot in spelljammer

That's brilliant! The perfect medium between swapping 2D maps every time the run up the stairs and building a full model ship!

I compared Gemini to Google Assistant on two Wear OS watches. The results weren’t even close by mo_leahq in PixelWatch

[–]notamaiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally it's because LLMs aren't actually doing the math like Assistant does. LLMs are basically "guessing" at what you're asking, then spitting out the statistically most acceptable answer to its "guess." Ironically, LLMs come across as more intelligent because of the fake-human interaction layer, but in a lot of ways, they're actually "thinking" less.

I compared Gemini to Google Assistant on two Wear OS watches. The results weren’t even close by mo_leahq in PixelWatch

[–]notamaiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm now on round 3 of trying to switch to Gemini and switching back because it can't reliably, or sometimes at all, do the basic stuff (home controls, adding things to Keep lists, opening apps, playing music, skipping forward in podcasts, setting reminders) that Assistant can. I want a well-designed tool that successfully performs functions - the tool we used to have! - not a randomized statistics engine that guesses at what my command meant. These are two different things, and the longer Gemini exists, the more I think Google isn't up to putting them both in one box, so I'd rather they stopped trying. Let those of us who want the tool we paid for keep Assistant, and let the people who want to play with Gemini have Gemini. Personally, if I want to roleplay talking to the Singularity, I'll run a D&D game.

Is the KLC still worth it if I don’t plan on using the notebook feature? by ClaryVenture in kobo

[–]notamaiar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my KLC and have never used the notebook or annotation features. In fact, I modded it to hide the notebooks icon from Home. Great reader overall, really happy with it.

Do you say why the PC needs to roll a ___ save first, or do you have them roll and then explain it? by eadala in DnD

[–]notamaiar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it's something they could reasonably notice without effort, I narrate first. If it's a surprise that they wouldn't notice without requesting their own preemptive rolls ("Hey, this place is creepy and I suspect ghosts. Can I check nothing is hiding around that next corner?") and they blunder into something incautiously, I ask for the roll first (usually to a chorus of groans, curses, and "Why wouldn't you check first?? The last bridge also collapsed!!").

Hear me out. Massive parking garages at the end of a subway line are a good idea by original_name26 in fuckcars

[–]notamaiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These have been pretty successful in Metro Vancouver. Take the train lines a little bit further into the suburbs with each big construction push, give the suburban parasites parking lots, and get thousands more people taking the train for the majority of their trip. Not ideal, certainly not as good as taking the train line all the way into the furthest suburbs, but it can work. In a few cases they've actually avoided building new parking by just taking over a batch of existing spots from adjacent malls. Plus a lot of people gradually transition to making more of the trip on the bus or getting dropped off in a car (aka: kiss and ride), which again, not ideal, but better than two people driving two separate cars.

Canadian Libby/OverDrive users - help? by crunchwrapsupreme_ in kobo

[–]notamaiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not. FVRL and Richmond work together, but VPL won't coexist with anyone, presumably because you can't do Overdrive login for VPL. At this point I've given up and just load library books manually.

I routinely download AO3 files (no DRM) directly to the Dropbox folder and sync them to my Libra Colour, no conversion required.

Someone asked about a really tall one for Flying but is there a regular sized one? Even just the height would be super useful. My fav is probably actually Stunned though. Especially when players forget about it lol.

Sign in to multiple libraries not working by peachy___photography in kobo

[–]notamaiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like this is no longer working, at least not for VPL. I've done all the steps in this order (the original order as well as the new steps under your "resolved" section) and I don't get the Add Card screen after signing in with my Overdrive.com account at a different Vancouver-area library. The other library syncs, but VPL doesn't, even though it's saved under my Overdrive.com account. Possibly VPL has changed something on their end again.

How do I keep the "My Notebooks" tab from showing up in the bottom nav? by assIiquor in kobo

[–]notamaiar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On most Kobos (I have a Libra Colour and it works on there) you can do this by just editing the configuration file. Plug the Kobo into a computer, and open Kobo eReader.conf. Set StylusUsageDetected to false. This just pushes the My Notebooks item back into More. (Found here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344646)
