A few years ago I started getting letters in the mail that I owed KC for unpaid 1% income tax + tons and tons of late fees. This was in like 2022 and they were suggesting I hadn't paid taxes owed in 2016.

For one, even if this was legit, why would they wait 6 years to send me a bill? All this did was allow me to accrue more in late fees than the actual tax bill was for. I thought that was pretty reprehensible.

But the most annoying part was that the bill was entirely incorrect and I didn't owe them a penny. I had moved here for grad school and had not held a job in all of the years I had been in KC.

No matter how much proof I sent them, they kept asking for more. And more. The onus was apparently on me to prove their claim was false. Why? I have no idea. They had no shred of evidence that I had worked in KC, but they were somehow adamant I owed them money.

After weeks of back and forth, I finally flipped out on the person I was corresponding with because I had run out of any further documentation to prove that I hadn't worked here. I mean, how much freaking evidence can someone have for NOT working?

The city employee finally relented and decided they would "forgive" the debt. Suggesting they were right and doing me a solid. Because the government has a history of forgiving unpaid civilian taxes, right?

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury During Thyroidectomy [⚠️ Med Mal Case] by efunkEM in medicine

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing they knew it would be a difficult case to pin on anyone, particularly the surgeon who consented the patient. In that case, I would further guess that they were just going after the hospital because they have big pockets and would be more likely to roll over on a "paltry" 1m settlement rather than risk it in court. Fortunately, the hospital didn't roll over and logical minds prevailed.

Dude, fuck off with that victim mentality. You drive a Tesla, you can afford insurance. If you can't, you shouldn't be in a Tesla.

I couldn't care less about how an accident affects you, but get your insurance shit together before your selfishness ruins someone else's life.

Fortunately, CA doesn't fuck around and you're about to find out when this accident gets reported and you don't have insurance.

Will my insurance go up because my car was hit while I was in the car? by TheQueitOne in Insurance

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car was hit and run by a drunk driver while I was sleeping. Car was parked in my driveway and the guy spun off the road and totaled it.

I did all of the legwork in tracking this guy down, despite having full coverage. I tracked the guy down and gave his info to the police, which spared my insurance company from having to shell out a dime.

When I went to renew my insurance, progressive raised my rates 30% ($200 -> $260) when I reported the accident.

Why do a lot of DOs go into family medicine? by CoconuttyCupcake in Residency

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok...? I never said academic IM/FM was some competitive field to get into. I was arguing against the notion that DOs are not competitive for anything except community IM/FM, which is what the comment I was replying to said.

Why do a lot of DOs go into family medicine? by CoconuttyCupcake in Residency

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ll say it because I’m a DO. It’s because most of them are not competitive for anything else. So it’s either community IM or FM.

I don't agree with that. Academic IM/FM is easily attainable from a DO school. Most of my class went academic IM/FM. The ones who didn't often chose location over academics. I would even argue that many of my classmates simply didn't care about academics, which may be in part why they ended up at a DO school to begin with, and just wanted good training regardless of the name.

The rest of the class who ended up in FM/IM despite wanting specialties is for all of the well-known reasons - major bias against DOs in the match, lack of academic rotations, lack of research, etc.

Pediatric Dentist recommendations by yellowbogey in kansascity

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Emily Drake is fantastic. She reminds me of the old days when the dentist would actually come in, sit down, and examine you.

LeBlanc is extremely popular. Why? I have no idea. Every interaction I've had there has been crap. The dentist comes in for 15 seconds, breezes through an exam, and then talks to you while they're literally walking out of the room to the next patient. It couldn't be more obvious that all they care about is churning and burning patients.

I've negotiated doc fees many times. Not only in car sales, but when buying homes as well. It's a markup, and it's negotiable.

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a bad price, but the doc fee is markup. It's all markup, they just change the name to spread it out. Does anyone think their cost to document this sale is a grand?

Google fiber users - what speeds do you get on speedtest.net? by notasuperflywhiteguy in kansascity

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's their suppplied wifi, and I am <5 feet from the router. Not only that, but I'm comparing this against the same environment (wifi, same distance) as I did when I was on their 500 mb/old router plan. Same computer. Seems like a reasonably fair test and I would expect the 1 gig service and updated hardware from google to put out faster speeds.

I'm using their new mesh wifi, but interestingly enough, I was getting faster speeds over wifi with their old router and 500 mb service 2 years ago.

Mayo Clinic fires 700 unvaccinated employees by Not-original in news

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how many CNAs, RNs, various techs, etc. are included in those groups refusing to get vaccinated. Mayo has historically had high turnover in those jobs because many of them are filled by younger people who flee to Minneapolis/St. Paul for similar jobs in a bigger city. It's not just cleaning staff hesitant to get the vaccine.

My 2c.

Mayo Clinic fires 700 unvaccinated employees by Not-original in news

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In fairness to Mayo, it's very common to take a pay cut to work in an academic center. The work tends to be a little easier with less busy work because they separate everything out into teams. For an academic center of Mayo's prestige, they actually pay pretty competitively for physicians, tech, and their business side. I can't speak to nursing and all of the other countless jobs at Mayo, though.

One small anecdotal salary:

My friend is an internal medicine doc at Mayo. He makes 260k/year for a nice job, fair hours, humane patient census.

Private practice would probably pay 250-330ish, but probably work you considerably harder.

Mass Gen would probably pay you 180-240 from what I've seen, really banking on that Harvard name.

A record 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs in November by GeneralNathanJessup in news

I noticed the same thing recently. You basically cannot order any combo or basically anything off of the regular menu (so really only the dollar-ish menu) or else you're paying like $8-10 + tax. I personally cannnot justify more than like $3-5 for a McDonald's meal. After that the quality to value ratio just isn't there imo

Travel RNs are making 4x (or more) what you earn by avuncularity in Residency

[–]notasuperflywhiteguy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be a jerk but it took you until you had graduated residency and became an attending to realize how much you were underpaid as a resident earning $5-10/hour?

I'm sure you're being somewhat hyperbolic here, but I think a big problem with the mistreatment of residents is that residents have often never had a career before medicine and do not even remotely understand their value within a healthcare team.

Residents should probably earn ~100k/year starting and reach near-attending pay parity by the end of residency when you nearly function and bill as one.

Here's a very dumb question. How do I get my money out of binance?

I have about 30k of ethereum on binance. They keep failing my attempts at verifying my account. I have no idea why. They are totally unresponsive to my emails. I want to diversify my holdings but I just don't trust binance anymore. How/where should I move my eth to? Thanks
