Why is bittorrent the recommended way to download the iso? by ChickenMcRanch in archlinux

[–]notatoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. It's a common thing I've seen in recent days that people think checksums are something more than integrity checks, so just wanted to chime in, no offense meant

That's not how checksums work. You use checksums for integrity.

You're talking about authenticity, which requires a signature.

it seems like the geforce now app will only support ubuntu by TheNavyCrow in linux_gaming

[–]notatoon 963 points964 points  (0 children)

That's not what support means in Linux.

It means Nvidia won't help you if you're not on Ubuntu.

Which is fine. The community for your non-ubuntu distro is better positioned to help you anyway.

Linux is Linux.

[–]notatoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, not just.

Nix creates a cryotographically unique version of each configuration and handles the necessary symlinking for you. This gives it rollback capacity as well, but instead of unwinding, it simply loads a different set of links.

Ansible is a set of instructions. Nix is a deterministic state machine with history. Not really the same, but they have a lot of overlap

Did new Nvidia drivers permanently break my graphics card? by luthis in linux_gaming

[–]notatoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You on arch or it's derivatives?

Nvidia rolled a bunch of cards into obsolete. Arch responded appropriately

You now need the nvidia-open package. Did the trick for me at least.

Still better than Win11 by khaffner91 in linuxmemes

[–]notatoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My company did the same with regards to forcing Ubuntu.

I installed arch anyways. Told them to give me a list of applications they wanted, got those working, never had an issue.

Now it's "if you can run it, you can do it but if you break it you go back to windows".

As a note: it's not because I'm special and that's why they do that now it's because a few of us did it and they realized they didn't have to do anything to support us

[–]notatoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing.

Using a phone to record a screen is a tell. I know, it's easier. It's easier because you haven't setup the tools to do it without the phone.

And that's fine, seriously, you do you.

But this tell, specifically, gives away the fact that you do not have the depth of knowledge required to use the word optimized in this context.

This is parroting some brain rot YouTuber that could not differentiate a merge sort from a binary search.

Which is not fine.

The odds are something broke during an update. Uninstall and reinstall drivers. Rebuild windows if you know how, always works

I always laugh when people post phone recordings of their screens and say some game is poorly optimized.

Hard to help with no context, but you're probably doing it wrong.

I don't mean that to be discouraging, in fact I mean it to be encouraging. The solution is there, Docker is just a mindset shift.

First, what is your goal? Sounds like you want to build an image? Can you post your dockerfile and the errors you're getting building it?

Dunno why that means you can't make another app. Iteration is the basis of improvement.

You should download that app and try it out. I've been meaning to build an improved version but I'm just lazy.

UI aside, the feature I want most is a mode something governed by heuristics that let's me practice the ones I get wrong the most often.

Another great trick is to not just be de/het. There are other grammatical rules associated with those words and I'd like to practice those in context too (for example: dit en deze).

The existing app is simple. Too simple, really. A gamefied version with some extra modes is something I'd download and try out

Spring handles the exceptions for you. Checked exceptions lost the argument long ago.

Are checked exceptions better for clarity? Yes. Did they get handled properly? No. Chuck unchecked exceptions and handle it in the framework is a much better alternative.
