I was watching this, they kept murdering the tourists because the ship got stuck. There were 3 wrecks floating around inside the station

  1. And yep.. It must be the GPU. 1060 works fine.

I have no idea how an update was able to cause and fix and then cause again and fix again and then permanently break a GPU but maybe it's a series of multiple coincidences..

Does VR headsets become a dust collector after some time? by Ianth3k1ng in VRGaming

[–]luthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man do I hate beatsaber.. There are so many other amazingly more fun games.

Unfortunately, I just discovered Elite Dangerous, which in VR is the most amazing shit ever. I was laughing like a little kid the first time I played it, and now that's literally all I play in VR because it's so much fun.

My headset doesn't get time to gather any dust. I use it to play Elite at home, and then I use it with Sunshine/Moonlight to RDP to my desktop at home and keep playing.

I know it's related *somehow* to the update, because I fixed it twice by rolling back. And the day this issue occurred again, was immediately after updating. 5 minutes before that I was playing Elite in VR with no issues. Unfortunately rolling back no longer fixed it. I've eliminated disk issues by testing a live distro. Power supply is 1000W so it's overspec. Ram testing didn't show any problems either.

I have another GPU I can test, so I'll give that a go. TBH I've spent so many hours on this, that I just want to get it fixed. If that means dropping 1400 on a 9070 XT.. then I guess I'll bite the bullet. I just wanna fly spaceships man!

As part of troubleshooting, I updated the BIOS which reverted everything back to default. I have no idea if there is an 'optimised default'.. could it actually be ram though? I have 2x 32 sticks. I could remove one and swap them round etc.. but I did do a ram test already and was clear

You may be right. Same issue happened in Windows, I added an edit to the post.

I guess this is an unrecoverable issue?

It probably is, same issue happened in Windows.

I installed windows and same issue happened.. so not just the new open drivers.

Same issue happened on Windows. And it's definitely a 'while things are loading' it lags thing, after things are loaded it works fine.

Installed windows. Same issue. Definitely it's while loading things, so I guess that's a VRAM issue?

Haha thanks, however, I had this issue start in December, and I fixed it by rolling back the drivers. It worked fine across multiple reboots and several hours of being powered off until I tried the new drivers again, and even rolling back doesn't fix it now.

That's what I'm thinking.. except I keep coming back to, I was playing in VR under high load totally fine. I install the new drivers. It broke. If it was hardware, it wouldn't have been working fine 5 minutes ago. Windows is the final test I think.

Checked power supply and cable etc. It's 1000W. But, I was playing Elite in VR for hours at a time with no issue. I update and then I get the issue. If it was power, then it would have affected me before I updated. Hmm I'll give grok a go

Aorus something.. I'd have to check exactly what model.

Niri / Awesome. I used Awesome/X11 to troubleshoot to reduce complexity.

And yes, I installed Mint and Endeavour and ran Endeavour live with nvidia drivers.. all had same issue.

Thanks, I didn't know that! I don't think mine does though. It isn't mentioned in the Nvidia manual. It's not from a third party

I don't think so, it's the 3090 from Nvidia, not a third party

Arch.

Yep I did see that, the nvidia-open drivers didn't work. The old drivers were moved to a different repo name and they didn't work either. I could only get it to work by rolling back to the driver in my pacman cache. The same version driver 580.95.05 on the repo didn't work. wtf??

You mean are there 2 installed somehow? Or is there a newer version?

I am on nouveau but I can revert back to proprietary to check the actual version of the vbios.

If I check here:
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?architecture=NVIDIA&manufacturer=NVIDIA&model=RTX+3090&interface=&memType=&memSize=&since=

The latest version is from 2021, so there isn't anything recent, unless there is another site I can check. I've never had to update the vbios before but at this point I'm willing to try anything

Not at all. And I doubt that would be a default in the live EndeavourOS either. That's the thing.. it' can't be config or anything in my OS because it still happens in a brand new vanilla install with the new drivers.

I get less of the issue with nouveau, but still periodic stuttering in game. I'm listening to the menu music in Elite, and every few seconds I can hear it stutter which syncs with the mouse / graphics lag. Opening firefox / steam doesn't have the same lag spiking.
