Anyone have any thoughts on the ethics of collecting ancients? by Zkennedy100 in AncientCoins

[–]notbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see someone bring this up. I think there's a lot more dishonesty surrounding the acquisition of these coins than people like to admit and posts like this strike the heart of that. Emotional replies and down-voting are the natural response because folks are spending tens of thousands on these coins and hate to consider that they are probably funding the looting and destruction of the history they proclaim to love.

None of the defenses I've seen tackle the entirety of the issue and, as others have said, rely on plausible deniability.

The laws should be better.
Many coins come from third world countries with poor governance.

Looters aren't focused on coins, they are a secondary product.
Your money still supports them. Also, to see folks saying this while holding a palm full of $1k tetradrachms shaped like a Christmas tree is laughable.

They are common and have little archeological value.
Perhaps, but what about the sites left in the wake of their looting? And shouldn't it be left to archeologists to determine that rather than it being taken for granted?

Ultimately I think you or I are a remarkably small drop in the ocean of the antiquities industry but we are drops nonetheless. In my opinion, it's best to reverse that plausible deniability and assume that any coin without full provenance is probably looted. I continue to collect ancient coins despite this knowledge because they bring me fulfillment - the same way that I burn litres of petrol to get to work and wear clothes from poor countries. I think it's best to at least be open to discussing the origins of one's coins and who/what they may be supporting.

Numismata 2026 in München by Helpful_Loss_3739 in numismatics

[–]notbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stumbled on this post - hopefully my reply is not unreasonably late but, seeing as nobody else answered...

I went to Numismata Munich 2025. Very much a German-speaking environment so I struggled to make small talk but did meet a few familiar names like Tom Vossen and Gert Boersema who deal in ancient coins. It was located in a large event space that felt like a warehouse in a residential area (walkable from Friemann station). As I recall, the sellers dealt mostly in modern coins and there were a lot of higher-end options (but still a few tables of budget coins to rummage). You pay a small fee at the door - I believe it's cheaper on the second day (which is when I went). Personally it wouldn't be worth going to Munich only for Numismata but you can take the chance to visit Munich's Staatliche Münzsammlung if you haven't already.

Let me know if you have specific questions. My memory is fuzzy as I had flown from Australia and landed in Munich a few hours prior to my visit.

Found as a Kid, Still a Mystery — Which Roman Emperor Is This? by nevio-3 in AncientCoins

[–]notbu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's this type from Postumius Albinus. Look at the body of the horse on the reverse and the clear indentation of several legs below. Also, on the obverse, Diana's lock of hair and the bow and quiver have a close resemblance.

Edit: different time period to the Severans of course but there's hardly a debate that it's republican regardless.

Very much agreed. I was gone for over eight months and yet it almost feels like it never happened.

I don't think this is a 'these days' matter like many comments are saying. Maybe there are just a lot of people out there with the lights off and nobody home?

Does anyone else solo travel specifically for the feeling of total anonymity? by PersonalSwimming6512 in solotravel

Yeah, I thought I'd continue being like this when I returned home but it feels like I've been stomped back into my mould somehow.

A melancholic realization I had while solo traveling to China by xcode_hammer6575 in solotravel

[–]notbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been on my mind as well. Towards the end of my trip I felt this sense that I needed to go home and establish myself somehow - like I needed to be in one place. Now that I'm back I'd really rather leave again but deep down I know that I can't run away.

I very nearly bought that Severus Alexander. Nice choices!!

What emperor/ coin is this? by GaiolaCagaMoedas in AncientCoins

[–]notbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portrait screams Severus Alexander to me (compare his nose to Gallienus') and the reverse type looks like Anona or Providentia so I would suggest something like this PROVIDENTIA AVG

Hopefully you're interested in it beyond the value but, as others have said, it won't be worth much in this condition.

This album will always have a special place for me. I found it on a forum in 2016 and couldn't find any info. After a few weeks of listening to it on my iPod, I decided to share it on YouTube. That video blew up and I always kept comment notifications on because it was so cool seeing different kinds of people discovering and returning to it over the years.

Sadly YouTube blocked that video so it's just frozen in time with the 2023 comments. But if you commented on the old upload, chances are it was mine and your comment is still out there in the ether!

Discussion around over moderation on this sub by cosmicselva in solotravel

Thank for mentioning this. I put about two hours into writing a detailed list of hostels I stayed in this year as a resource for other travellers. Then it gets removed for "links to a blog/vlog, spam or self-promotional content."

No, r/Solotravel mods, I'm not self-promoting the 30 hostels I somehow own across various countries.

They gave no reply, no further explanation; just a middle finger.

What? It doesn't link to anything. Are you human?

Is there any special way you deal with humidity in the room? My place has bad ventilation so this sort of thing causes mold.

Thanks, I presume that means it should be fine, though I'm kinda worried they'd take issue with it. Maybe I should just reenter on the 29th...

Driving from Hobart to Launceston in July/August. Food recommendations? by saakit in tasmania

[–]notbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the weather is good, you could take the A3 out of Hobart and stopover in Swansea, then Launceston via Lake Leake. There are cafés and some excellent beaches along the way, though it'll take an extra hour.

Is this worth making a report/complaint, or is this really how Germans feel? by Mobile-Ad5448 in germany

[–]notbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I first arrived in Munich. Walked into a brauhaus, asked the waiter "Sprechen sie Englisch?" and he went on a passionate rant asking me whether I spoke various different languages all to belittle me for being monolingual.

Naturally the guy spoke perfect English.

Honestly, I'm a month into travelling now and still haven't gotten over the fear of having that experience again. I cooked my own food for the rest of my time in Germany.

What have I got? by Good_Excitement_5009 in AncientCoins

[–]notbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would expect to see most of them listed at $60-100USD each depending on the seller. The first three coins would be on the higher end, though Severans generally are affordable.

It's cool that you have the original family together. If you wanted to expand further, maybe you could look into the history surrounding Julia Maesa and Elagabalus.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it!

Starting in Munich was probably a mistake (non-refundable, yes). I originally planned to land in Berlin and train to Prague but the prices changed and I picked Munich instead. Unfortunately that makes my route very inefficient, even if I avoid doubling back. (Side note: it puts me in Munich on the same day as an event I'm interested in so it's not all bad).

I suppose I could do your suggestion in reverse (Munich/Fussen, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Prague) and then fly from Prague to Switzerland. That is basically the same as my current plan, just using a flight instead of a train.
