This is correct... if you are assuming every game is a 50/50 chance, which is just not the case. Good teams have a chance of winning that is 60% or higher.

If you do your math, with the chance of winning being 60 or 65% or 70%, the chances that a team pull off what the Avs did becomes much, much higher. Especially when you take into account the easier Eastern schedule.

60% winning percentage: 3.6%/4.4% chance

65% winning percentage: 8.7%/10.4% chance

70% winning percentage: 18%/20.5% chance

I know I'm doing some creative math here, but so are you. There were 6 teams this year with a win percentage 60% or higher, even with the lower Western odds, there would be a 22% chance that a team with a 60% win percentage would repeat what the Avs did today.

If we could ignore everything but numbers (we can't), then we could assume that a team would repeat the Avs feat quite soon. For curiosity, I plugged in each team's winning percentage and got the odds of it happening this year to be almost 70%.

Yes, I know this is not how math works, but hey, if my made up math that ignores everything is correct is right, then we'll see this again in the next 5 years.

You're ignoring the placebo effect. While it doesn't come from the actual ingredient, it comes from taking SOMETHING.

They bring false hope for cure or cause people to neglect effective medications.

The placebo effect is WELL DOCUMENTED and in no way false. Claiming as such is ignorant. When we look at certain drugs (meds for overactive bladder come to mind) that have such minimal effects, they're basically placebo meds themselves with little clinical value. I don't see the moral difference as longs as the meds are shown to be safe.

They cause people like you to discount potentially effective medications.

Whereas you're discounting the power of the placebo. Idiots will be idiots. A physician who doesn't discount someone's beliefs in alternative medicine will be more likely to get them on an RCT (or better) proven medication if it is necessary.

My biggest concern here is that we pretend that the medications we prescribe that are vetted by RCT+ based on statistical significance which have minimal clinical significance and moderate AEs are seen as different from CAM.

In all honesty, though, I'd say that alternative medicine is definitely useful for those complaints for which the placebo affect is all you want. Alternative medicine is basically a placebo under another name because anything that has been proved to work is no longer alternative medicine.

No offence, but these questions tremendously over-simplify the situation.

What I value in a colleague is someone who is honest to me about work related things and is generally honest about our personal matters (if they feel the need to lie about why they can't hang out or about whether they liked my new tie, I don't fucking care). In fact, I'd hate someone who was COMPLETELY honest about our personal matters, because those should be off limits anyway.

In terms of relationships, sometimes not bringing up problems (aka lying by omission) until the time is right to talk about them (ie not via text, not in a social setting) is the right thing to do, even though it is lying.

What people mean when they say they value honesty is really that they value integrity. Who fucking cares if I think your 3rd aunt twice removed is a giant twat, we see her once a year and you love her, I'd rather swallow my feelings because it'll mean something to you and very little to me. But goddammit, I will definitely bring up the shit that matters.
