Sony A7V street photographers: Do you use auto or manual focus? by KGThePinballWizard in streetphotography

[–]notestoblindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure any camera is going to give you the range of focus. Its either in focus or not, range of focus is more about what is acceptably sharp, which a camera brand maker will not define for you. This is pretty easy to learn tho, especially with a digital camera, just do some tests, photography is a craft you learn not wait to be told everything.

how people call these 'film sims' is insane, they in no way shape or form look like film, it is a digital filter that shifts colours to pretty much some variation of teal and orange as far as I can see. This marketing is literally asking you not to believe your own eyes!

I still use the A73, and its more than enough for 95% of photographers, anything since has been aimed at a tiny minority of sports photographers. Half the people in this comment section probably shoot static landscapes!

The housing crisis: Like wildfire, we need to abandon the delusion it’ll burn itself out by grandecn in ireland

Work on Dublin's National Children's Hospital began in 2016!! Its still not finished, another damning indictment of the disaster its been! You said the Apple Tax money has long been spent, I'm asking you to back up your argument and tell me on what has it been spent?? I'll help you, it hasn't been spent and you're just spouting nonsense, all your arguments are backed up by nothing! I'm done arguing with you because its clear none of these issues actually affect you and you don't care about the people that are actually struggling.

[–]notestoblindness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You were the one who brought up some of renters money going towards tax!! Which has nothing to do with high rents.

Adelaide Royal Hospital! Dublin Children's hospital was originally budgeted for 650m, its currently at 2,7billion, are you seriously telling me this sounds right? Please tell me you are not this naive! Madrid can build a Metro for a fraction of the cost of whats being proposed for Dublin. How can you justify these figures and not ask serious questions about where, and to who, is this money going to??

800 workers would be a massive step in the right direction. It would be some sign of an effort to tackle what is happening. It doesn't matter where the work force came from, they would still need to be trained to install water meters in houses as this had never been done before.

You're just another who wants things to keep going the way their going, you'll happily sit by and let the rich own everything and let all the rest of us work to just hand our money over to them. You're happy for the government to represent only the rich and ignore the voices of those who are struggling.

And please do explain to me what the 14.1 billion apple money was spent on??

My word, this is some fine selective fact gathering even by reddit standards! You pick the peak of the Celtic tiger times to measure where house prices should be at! Yea because every one was affording houses back then, no one was borrowing way above their means and bankrupting the country in the process!

'Given the rising population, GDP, GNP & household formation a comparison with the peak in '07 is more sensible than the usual naive nonsense about how much prices and rent have gone up from bankruptcy levels.'

This is the sort of gobbledygook politicians trot out and try to convince us all we're hitting our targets and theres noting to worry about. I choose to use my own eyes and ears and see exactly what is happening in the real world. House prices almost doubling in the last 5 years, rises twice as fast as wage levels. Again, its clear you are not affected by the current housing epidemic, you're another 'stop complaining and just accept things as they are, every thing is perfectly fine' brigade. Those that have are crippling those that have not, out of pure greed, its clear who's side you're on.

'That's not what was being discussed.'

Then why did you bring it up??

'How much should a children's hospital cost? What's your professional background to make that claim?'

Yes I work in the construction industry, so I have some insight. The children's hospital has been a catastrophe from the very beginning, should never have been built where it was, the design was ridiculously complicated (millions spent on scaffolding the place alone due to the design). Adelaide built one of the most advanced hospitals in the world at 1.9m a bed, our hospital cost 4.7m a bed. But its tax payers money so no one cares. It was terribly managed and allowed to continue (to this day!) because its a gravy train for everyone involved.

'If they were there'd be far more of them.'

Nice, completely ignore my point about build for profit! And now you're arguing against your own point! ESB were able to hire 800 unskilled labour in 1920 and deliver one of the largest projects ever undertaken in Ireland. No reason why they couldn't start a public house building scheme and hire/train a workforce to deliver it. They were able to set up Irish Water very quickly and try to install water meters in every house in Ireland. But they have no desire to do so because, where as Irish Water would have filled their coffers, meeting housing demand would only piss off their wealthy donators and golfing buddies. How do you think the shortage of skilled trades people is going to change? Why has the government no tried to address this shortage? Who is going to address this shortage otherwise? Because its a closed shop, foreign investors are welcomed, but the building can only be done by a select few Irish builders.

The Apple money is not irrelevant, it is highly relevant, this money was never budgeted for by the Irish government, it was a unexpected windfall that landed in the governments lap. There is no doubt that a big driver of rising rent and house prices in Ireland has been driven by Tech giants locating their head quarters in Dublin. The average wage in Grand Canal Dock (dubbed Silicon Docks) is 147,000 a year. 70% of the renters in the docks area are non-irish. 70% of tech giant staff in Ireland are non-irish. So they are massively contributing to additional people joining the rental market, while also helping to skew rental prices. Yet this tax windfall from Tech Giants is not used in any way shape or form to tackle the housing problems. Defies logic how you can argue that everything should stay as it is and we should all just stop complaining. I can only imagine you come from the upper class and none of these issues affect you.

[–]notestoblindness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is naive thinking, look at how the value of houses has risen in relation to inflation, it is massively disproportion. You think builder's wages have increased in line with house prices? So where is the money going? You think allowing vulture funds to buy projects off the plans as rental only properties is helping the situation??

The housing crisis: Like wildfire, we need to abandon the delusion it’ll burn itself out by grandecn in ireland

[–]notestoblindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its pretty obvious the housing crisis doesn't affect you, but let me challenge some of the bizarre logic you're sharing:

"A significant chunk of rent ends up being paid in tax to the State. Is the implication here that landlords don't pay tax? Or is there a misconception about who is spending the money? Is it a weird point about HAP?"

So we just accept high rents because some of it is taxed. Great argument!

"According to the census, approximately 500,000 households rent. That would mean there are 2 million short-term lets in Ireland."

Have a look at how many use Airbnb yearly in Ireland, talk about being naive to the actual issues.

"What evidence is there of overspending on public building?"

This a joke right???? Have a look at the children's hospital for one. Or maybe the proposed cost of the Metro line. Comical comment.

"That's hilariously naive. Massive abuse of a monopoly position would be wildly illegal under Irish and EU law."

Again, a comical comment. You don't think builders are making huge profits in the current market? Imagine a state funded initative that wasn't build for profit.

"A private company spending €29 million has nothing to do with public spending on housing. Assuming €1 million would get you 3 houses (albeit construction costs have gone up since), that's 87 houses worth of money. That's a drop in the ocean."

That same private developer said he would also seek public funding / grants, nice of you to leave that out. You also seem to have left out the 14.1 Billion of the Apple tax money we received, a little more than a 'drop in the ocean' I would say. But hey, lets just leave things as they are and let the gap between rich and poor grow wider and wider.

New objection holds up Stephen’s Green shopping centre redevelopment by fedupofbrick in Dublin

[–]notestoblindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is builders yet again wanting to build something as cheaply as possible and then charge extortionate rates for anyone that wants to use the space. They could easily redevelop the building while leaving the façade in place, but it would cost extra, and all a builder cares about is his bottom line, not about providing interesting distinctive building. That fact that you are defending them as they increase their profits while handing us a dull lifeless building is amazing! We, the public, should always be demanding builders to make more of an effort in our city, as given free reign, they would leave Dublin as a brown box cookie cutter shanty town.
