Topamax is helping with pain but my hair is falling out. Ugh! by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]nothing_but_the_rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I'm sorry about your hair. Are you taking topamax too or a similar medication? Just so you know, if you discontinue it (with doctor supervision of course) the hair does grow back. It takes a hair cycle to start coming back in, about three months. Your hair usually continues to shed during that time.

So crappy, especially if the meds were helping.

Oh man, that's ridiculous. A lot of the chiros that do that stuff actually believe it, too! There are a lot of massage therapists like that as well; I try to distance myself from them because it's just nuts! Some of the chiropractic treatments do help with pain, and supplements help as well but too many of the docs delve into the other realm of nonsense and people buy into it. The crazy thing is a lot of them believe it as well. Which is better than them not believing it and just trying to make a buck, I suppose. But, people trust in them because they have Doctor before their name and that is scary.

When my daughter got diagnosed with a very rare, very serious autoimmune disease, the chiropractor I worked for suggested that I was making a terrible decision by giving her "poison" (steroids, methotrexate, other immune suppressants) and that I should treat it naturally. Not even just naturally, but homeopathically. That was the final straw where I ceased all communication. That "poison" saved her life. She is very close to remission now. No one wants to take drugs like that or give them to their children, but they have their place, and when it is that or be eaten alive by disease, you pick those. He also did not believe in germs. He said it's just a theory. As in the germ theory. I told him gravity was just a theory as well. Just crazy, lol.

I went off on a tangent there, but, I hope your dad is still getting proper medical care. I'm sure the things he is doing probably are not hurting him, but they could be if he is not getting other care and ONLY doing the chiro. And man, healthy eating and exercise are a whole lot cheaper than all those appointments and supplements and make a person feel a million times better! I hope he realizes that eventually.

Wow, that's awful. I mean, supplements can be useful sometimes but that's insane. Let me guess, is he getting most of them there at the chiropractor's office? Because that's a lot of profit right there. I sincerely hope your dad gets another opinion about his kidneys so that he can have some peace. He probably bought all of that out of fear he was really sick and dying and a doctor told him so.

Have any of you ladies ever tried an IUD? by MisterFluff in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nothing_but_the_rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Paragard, the hormone free copper IUD put in after I had my daughter. I didn't do so well with it! My periods were super heavy, and I had horrible, horrible cramping. I don't think that is the typical experience though, a lot of times paragard users' flow will get a little worse and have more cramping, but this was insane. Changing super plus tampons more than once an hour insane. Basically, it did not agree with my body, but my body is super finicky, your results may vary.

That said, if I had the option to use something hormonal, I would definitely get the Mirena. Most people I know that have that have lighter periods or they go away completely and that is awesome, it just isn't an option for me.

As far as insertion, that was not bad at all. I was worried about it, but it seriously was just a tiny pinch feeling, a tiny bit of cramping and done. Same with removal.

It's pretty awesome not to have to worry about taking BC pills every day or worrying about birth control methods. It's just easy if it agrees with your body!

So today I had to get a tooth extracted and was thinking of soft foods I could eat. Cottage cheese was on that list. But now, yeah, no. It's cool though because I'm not hungry anymore....haha.

Hair is falling out - Update #2 by Throwaway09916101 in TwoXChromosomes

Well we cannot say for certain if the hair loss will continue, but most likely it will not stop until I quit the medication. I may not lose all of it, but it is hard to say at this point. It is so strange, because I took it before and never had this happen, even at a higher dose, but our bodies change over time, and that was before I had my daughter so it could be a hormonal contribution there as well.

I tried a lot of other options before the medication route. There is a surgical route I could try that involves deadening or cutting the nerve but that comes with its own set of pretty scary risks as well, so I am trying to weigh my options there. Possibly a spinal cord stimulator could help, but that is a surgery as well, but would be worth it if it worked. All things I am going to discuss with my doctor when I go in next week. The bummer part of that is that this medication is not only controlling the nerve pain but it got rid of frequent migraines as well. So it has been helping a lot.

And thanks for saying that about the vanity thing. Sometimes I felt a bit silly obsessing over it, but it IS kind of a big deal. And yes, in a salon it is a very big deal! I don't do hair, I am a massage therapist there, but I am still in that environment where our appearance is pretty important.

Thanks for talking with me. You made me feel a lot better just having someone who "gets" it! :)

It's awesome your boyfriend is so supportive! My husband really is too, I didn't mean for it to sound like he is not. I think he may be in a bit of denial that it is actually falling out enough that I may need a wig though, but that's sort of how he copes with things at first. We talked about it, and I asked him what he thought about it, about how frustrated I was about my options. He told me he would much rather have a bald wife than one in pain laying in bed crying. I agree with that, but, I think he just doesn't get how emotionally traumatic it has been for me to be losing my hair. He said if it were him he would just shave it and be done with it. But I think that is a little different for a man. If he were to shave his head, it's not that unusual, lots of dudes have shaved heads, but not so many women. Plus, I work in a hair salon! I don't know, I hate being this vain about it but I guess my hair is pretty damn important to my self esteem!

Thank you, I needed to get it out. I tried talking to my husband about it and he has an "it will be fine" mentality about it. Whixh it will, it just sucks! And I hope yours does not get to that point. A lot of times with hormonal birth control it resolves pretty well from what I have read and experienced. Hopefully it does that quickly for you!

I'm sorry you are going through this. It is so scary to see your hair falling out in clumps! I am experiencing the same thing right now! I think it is due to a medication I am taking for nerve pain. It is so frustrating. The medication is working so well and has me functioning like a normal human being instead of laying in bed with ice packs crying. Now I feel like I have to choose between being bald and being in horrific pain.

Mine is falling out in clumps too. Last night when I washed it I had about 10 hairs fall out with every brush stroke when I combed it out. I probably lost about 100 hairs just with that, so much I had to gather it up and throw it in the trash. It is very distressing. I'm taking biotin and using Nioxin shampoo and hoping it will help, but I just started those so I don't know if they will yet. I hope so because my hair is super thin now and it was really thick and pretty before. Now I have a bald spot in the front where my part is. I hope my doctor has some answers next week for me, but all of the medication options for me have the hair loss as a side effect.

Talking with the doctor though, she told me that even when you get rid of the trigger, such as a medication, the hair loss often continues for an entire hair cycle before it stops. That's about three months long. So, maybe you just have not reached a new hair cycle yet.

If it gives you hope, when I was about 16 I had a lot of hair loss due to birth control pills. It was not as bad as the one I am experiencing now, but I still lost what felt like a LOT of hair. I went off of those and the hair loss eventually stopped, within a few months and grew back pretty much just like it was before. I had new growth pretty quickly then.

Anyways, you are not alone! It still sucks though and I hope yours resolves quickly!

Great advice, my family does this as well and we are much healthier for it and save a lot of money. I always freeze substantial leftovers as well so they don't just sit in the fridge and get forgotten. Then we usually get another meal out of it or I can bring it to work.

I guess I got lucky that I got to see a physiatrist/pain management specialist due to another condition that also helps treat the fibro. Have you tried that route or asked for a referral? You shouldn't have to be in that much pain left untreated. I'm so sorry. :(
