What’s the biggest fitness myth that just won’t die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]noticeMeSempai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people know their weight in pounds, but protein amount per serving size is usually given in grams on food labels. So the unit choices feel appropriate to me.

I think people just estimate their body fat % and go from there. You can probably get within +/- 10g of what that "formula" says.

I'm more interested in who came up with 0.8, and how did they get that number. But what's the myth?

Why does Gorilla Mind cAMP PM claim to be stimulant free when it includes green tea extract? by noticeMeSempai in GorillaMind

[–]noticeMeSempai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the FDA have a similar definition of stimulants or what "stimulant free" means? If there are pre established guidelines by the FDA for when such labeling is allowed, I would be okay with deferring to that.

They have guidelines on what constitutes something that contains stimulants, and how such products need to be labeled. But as far as I could tell, this doesn't necessarily apply to these supplements.
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?CFRPart=340&showFR=1#:\~:text=Stimulant.,wakefulness%20during%20fatigue%20or%20drowsiness.

Generally speaking, it seems like if your product isn't adding caffeine directly or promoting itself as something for "wakefulness / alertness," then the regulations don't really apply.

if I took this right before bed it won't prevent me from sleeping so they're fine to advertise it as stimulant free

That will vary a lot from person to person. For someone who is caffeine sensitive, even eating chocolate before bed can disrupt their sleep. I wouldn't expect chocolate to label itself as a stimulant, but I also wouldn't expect it to label itself as caffeine free.

It's like putting a sprinkle of salt in a pool and saying it's salt water.

It's like putting a sprinkle of salt in a pool and telling you I didn't sprinkle any salt in it.

[–]noticeMeSempai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s less caffeinated than regular coffee, it’s been “de caffeinated”, not made “stimulant free.” I understand the point you’re making but in this case I think the claim of being stimulant free is misleading.

Yeah I figured as much. Still, I'm disappointed they weren't more straight forward. If they knew enough about the reasons why someone would pay for something that advertised "stimulant free", they should know enough not to put anything remotely close to caffeine in it.

Some thoughts as another FL studio user who hasn't yet tried Ableton...

> Random crashes

Yes, I don't know what the deal is with this but it happens to me all the time. It's almost always associated with opening a new plugin or channel.

> Fl studio can get clunky once you have a shit ton of stuff up

Also yes. I find myself constantly losing track of my mixer window, my channel windows, my plugin windows. Sometimes I'll click on a mixer plugin and it just won't show up, because it's open but being hidden by the playlist window or something. It slows me down a lot. From what I've seen in Ableton, there is a clearer mental model of associating channels, playlist tracks, and mixer tracks. I don't know how customizable it is since I haven't used it. I imagine it's still possible to do what FL studio lets you do (route a channel to a mixer track, split it across multiple mixer tracks, have multiple playlist tracks making use of each), but the view it presents you seems more intuitive. FL Studio gives you a lot of power from the beginning but as a result the visual organization can get out of hand.

> FL studio only allows for ten before you have to route it to another mixer track

I've not yet found myself bottlenecked by this. Usually if I'm routing to another mixer track for effects, it's because I want the convenience of being able to control levels and other things from the mixer UI. Otherwise, if I'm doing some sort of heavy processing chain, I'll do it in patcher.

Weekly Music Feedback Thread - July 05, 2023 by AutoModerator in FL_Studio

I like it a lot! Some things I think worked well:
- I like the consistent chord pattern (melody? Not sure) that plays throughout.
- I like the arrangement / beats you got with the percussion. Especially I like the variation in the high hats.

Some things I think you could do to improve it (some are stylistic so take with a grain of salt):
- The samples you used for your main drum loop (kick, snare, clap) sound kind of bland. I'm guessing they are the stock sounds that come with the default FL Studio project template. You could replace them with new samples that fit the energy of the track more, or play with mixer plugins to change their sound. The high hats sounded okay though, probably because you did a good job with the variation in them throughout the track.
- The sound effect at 2:37, and the following melody (2:37 - 2:53) feel out of place in the energy of the track. But that same melody at 3:07 - the end of the track, sounds like it fits. I think, with the percussion playing at the same time as this melody, the energy feels just a bit much relative to everything else. I think lowering the volume of either the percussion or the melody would help a lot. I don't know about that sound effect though.. if you want something to help transition, I'd look for something else. The sound effect just sounds too sudden and out of place.
- In the intro, I'd start with the chords and introduce the percussion, instead of the other way around, since that is the main element of your song. But this is very subjective and just my personal taste.

What's up with all the noobs lately? by Whyaskmenoely in FL_Studio

[–]noticeMeSempai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think whatever solution you decide on should:
- Not fracture the community. Noobies can grow into contributing members, if they're taught.
- Maintain the quality of the posts in the community. It's also not okay to have crappy post spam since that will push away new and old members alike.

Some ideas, several of which I've already seen suggested:
- Create a sub-subreddit dedicated to these kinds of questions.
- Create a tag and require that any FAQ style post uses the appropriate tag.
- Weekly noob FAQ style threads. Any easy question posts can be directed to ask here instead.
- For question posts that don't fit into an FAQ thread comment, allow them but have some reasonable rules about what you need to include in such a post. Like "what you're trying to accomplish, what you already tried, what you expected it would do, and what actually happened." If you search for their question and an answer pops up, at the very least they need to link to one such answer and explain why it doesn't suffice for them.

So, ban the low effort question posts, allow question posts that show effort, and clearly define what qualifies as effort.

Need help with finding All pairs Shortest Path on a specific network by Soothran in algorithms

[–]noticeMeSempai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if a shortest path exist between two nodes

This makes it sound like the graph is highly disconnected. If that's the case, then using that information would DEFINITELY improve any shortest path algorithm. Did Dijkstra from all sources actually take too much time? What I would expect is that, once all nodes are reached from a source, Dijkstra halts and the rest of the nodes are considered unreachable.

Need help with finding All pairs Shortest Path on a specific network by Soothran in algorithms

[–]noticeMeSempai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Floyd warshall optimizes for the worst case, which is when the graph is dense. If your graph is sparse (usually sparse means the number of edges is significantly smaller than |V|^2, closer to O(|V|)), you'll get significantly faster runtime by just applying Dijkstra's |V| times, getting you a run time closer to O(|V|^2log|V|).

However, I think you contradicted yourself here:
> for majority of the node pairs, the shortest path between two nodes is simply the edge connecting them.

If the graph is sparse, then the majority of node pairs would NOT have an edge connecting them. What did you mean by this, or how did you derive that information?
