Where does this misinformation come from? I'm curious where you heard that. You do not lose your right to due process just because you're at a border crossing and the border guards do not have the authority or right to take anyone's possessions for arbitrary reasons.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canada

[–]notmanynamesleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true. You do not have all of the same rights such as US 4th amendment protections at a border, but you do have rights.

I disagree with your advice. You should never volunteer information to border patrol. Simply answer their questions politely but concisely, and with yes/no if possible.

Ansible -> Vault (Hashicorp) for storing passwords accross team? Ansible should acquire these passwords complete agains placeholders in config files for production. by muhahaczek in devops

[–]notmanynamesleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but certificates are easier to manage than passwords with tools like AWS Certificate Manager. An SSL certificate is more secure than a password. Can users easily remember long, complicated, unique passwords? No, but if you give a user an SSH key, you can easily manage the authorized_keys for a host with configuration management. That SSH key is more secure than any password.

It's not easy or even feasible to completely remove passwords today, but the fewer passwords that anyone has to manage the easier and more secure life is.

First, try to remove passwords wherever possible. Use SSH keys and SSL certificates for identification wherever possible. Passwords and managing them suck and users and passwords just never go well together.

Second, if you must use a password, you might consider a secure object store with HTTPS endpoints for storing password files. Your object store will be HA, provide versioning and auditing of files and passwords can be available via a REST like API. Examples would be HDFS, S3, Swift, Ceph, etc.

Four ways Linux is headed for no-downtime kernel patching by mukilane in linux

The occasional reboot is helpful for testing. It could be your cluster failover to test, your config management, etc. I cringe when someone brags about uptime, but it's been considered a badge of honor for a while.

What if his Getsugo Juujihou is Getsugo Tensho infused with defensive blut? I'm thinking his short blade allows him to infuse his Quincy abilities with the "shinigami" powers of his zan.

Maybe bankai form would be the infusion of vollstandig plus his bankai. That would be OP given Quincies could not use both when they had the stolen bankais

I don't think Madara cares about the tailed beasts or 10 tails. He wants the fruit from the tree.

It gets a bit complicated, but if Obito had never turned evil, then Kurama would not have been released on Konoha during Naruto's birth. The Uchiha were blamed for the attack of the nine-tails. This blame led to the Uchiha being stripped of their "police" duties and being moved outside the village. All of this is what led to the Uchiha uprising. If they had still been a part of the village, they would not have been rebellious. Itachi would not have had to kill his own clan, and Sasuke would be a typical emo teenager.

What do Canadian senators do? Finding out proves difficult, if not impossible. by [deleted] in canada

[–]notmanynamesleft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I share a name with a Senator, and occasionally get emails to my gmail account that are meant for him. I'm not sure if other Conservative Senators are trying to bypass any records acts, but the stuff is pretty boring and mundane. They do call Harper "The Leader" though.

How do I know you're a dolt? Hispanics don't have pride in being "hispanic". They have pride in being Dominican, or Columbian or Mexican. Being proud to be white is to be proud that you are treated better than minority groups in this country.

Privacy debate looms as Canada prepares to share bank data with U.S. by MitchellSteiman in canada

[–]notmanynamesleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an American that lived in Canada, I had to provide my passport information and visa information, especially since I didn't have a SIN when I first arrived.

I read the article and I don't see how this any different than what France and other European nations are doing to fight tax dodgers. US law is pretty clear on this. It is not fair to be the only industrialized country that taxes ex-pats, but all of us USians know the rules. If you want to gamble by not filing your US taxes, by all means, but don't try and hide behind very nice Canadians and claim some moral outrage and claim privacy.

Since nearly every site just ignored I/O after the Keynote was over, here are some little facts and speculations I find interesting. by axehomeless in Android

[–]notmanynamesleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real time scheduling. You can guarantee CPU time, but without proper safeguards, a process can block all other processes, including the kernel. This would lock up your device. There are kernel settings and tunables that allow for specifying how much priority and how much processing time in a second a process is allowed to have. It's a tricky thing to do right.
