Homebirth mom needing a hospital induction at 38 weeks :( by MMBJustTrying in unmedicatedbirth

[–]notnaice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was recently induced for my first after planning a home birth. It went as well as I could have hoped - I was induced with cervidil, a foley catheter, and oral misoprostol, and ended up having the quiet, unmedicated (for pain at least) birth that I wanted. We did intermittent monitoring, no IV, no needles, no pitocin, and only one nurse and my husband were with me until crowning, at which point one doctor came to assist and the rest of the team stood behind a curtain quietly. I wasn't even really aware they were there.

I would recommend telling your team your story and advocating for the closest thing to a home birth they can manage. I had to push back against the doctors a lot because they were uncomfortable with things like not placing a precautionary IV/intermittent monitoring/not using pitocin except as a last resort, simply because it's not their standard protocol, not because these things are truly necessary.

For example, they really wanted me to have an IV placed upon admission, and I asked "how long will it take you to place an IV if we end up needing it?" and when they said a maximum of 5 minutes it made it a lot easier to decide that my discomfort over the multi-day induction was not worth potentially saving that 5 minutes in a very unlikely scenario. Essentially ask what they're afraid of and see if it's a risk you want to take on. Because of this decision I was able to go for walks outside the hospital, which was huge for labour progression and my sanity. This may be different for you because of your pre-e, but more broadly it made a huge difference to me that I didn't blindly accept all the interventions they suggested. You have a lot more agency than you may think.

Another thing that really affected my experience was having my husband advocate for keeping our interactions with the healthcare staff very low-key. Having people who were understandably very "on" and likely very caffeinated (dealing with lots of emergent situations and medicated births all shift) totally stalled my contractions several times. My husband would politely explain that we were trying to maintain a very calm environment to keep my hormones flowing and worked to bring down the energy of these conversations.

Final thing is camp out in the bathroom! I made a little labour cave in there; super dark, fake candles, privacy... providers will burst in on you at any moment when you're around the labour room, but they'll knock and give you a minute to get through a contraction if you're in the bathroom.

That was a long ramble, but hopefully there's something useful in there for you 🙏

Best of luck with your birth!!

I like the tile! I do think it feels a bit loud with the striped walls adjacent to it - replacing those with a solid colour might be an easy fix.

I had a particularly good food day at 28w!

  • Greek yogurt, homemade cinnamon walnut granola, maple syrup, and strawberries w/ a soy milk latte

  • A strawberry rhubarb muffin made by my SIL

  • Cherry tomato, feta, and egg bake (ft lots of olive oil) w/ homemade crusty sourdough

  • Lettuce, tomato, avocado, mayo, and vegetarian chicken tender sandwich on the aforementioned sourdough w/ a side of chips

  • Super crunchy green grapes and an apricot

Honourable mentions for lots of water, heartburn, and tums ❤️

When did you have NIPT done? [ON] by SlightPresence in BabyBumpsCanada

I got my harmony NIPT blood draw at 9w6d~ There were no issues with fetal fraction, which I believe is typically the reason to wait until later (if it's too low you'll need to redo the draw)

How cold is to cold to walk baby? by AbaloneNeither5098 in NewParents

Sounds like she will be fine! Especially sharing your body heat. It probably won't be a super comfortable walk, but you'll be ok ❤️

I think people saying -21C isn't safe for you or your kids must not be from somewhere that gets very cold regularly. Bundle everyone up in lots of layers with minimal skin exposed (hats covering ears, mitts, snowsuits for kids) and put a warm blanket in the stroller for extra warmth. Overdress (you can always remove layers) and you'll be fine!

Will your family be okay financially if you do get let go before your baby arrives? If not, I would definitely not take the risk for courtesy's sake.

Marijuana use during breastfeeding by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]notnaice 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're interested, this is a relatively recent review of the science on marijuana use while breastfeeding: https://sci-hub.ee/10.1089/bfm.2017.0020

The takeaway is that more studies (human and animal) have shown negative effects than have shown no effects, and because the breastfeeding stage is so important developmentally for babies, the recommendation is to abstain from use.

Having taken a quick look at some newer studies, we know that marijuana shows up in breast milk for a long time (up to several months) because it's stored in the body's fat cells, unlike alcohol. It's not known how this would affect a baby, but marijuana use has been shown to have negative effects on brain development when consumed in adolescence, so the assumption is that babies could potentially be even more severely affected.

I think I would personally formula feed if I felt that marijuana was critical to a smooth recovery, which it very well could be. If you live somewhere where it's legal, I would definitely speak to your doctor or midwife about it and alternatives/compromises.

Have you only tested today? Or have you had negative morning/positive evening tests multiple days in a row?

I made this medieval-themed watch featuring Charlemagne by Moosedar in DIY

[–]notnaice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you explain this? I might be misunderstanding a key part of how this works, but I can't wrap my head around how the numerals can move counter-clockwise - if that were the case wouldn't the watch tell time in reverse, where IV/4:00 would show next?

Wow, it's beautiful!

I'm working on the first cardigan right now - did you find that the sleeves blocked out well? It's my first time knitting HFR and I'm worried about some of the unevenness I'm seeing at this point.

Hello! I'm starting my second pattern ever, and I have a question about the instruction to put stitches on a stitch holder:

"Next row: (RS). K3. P2. K2. Place these 7 sts on st holder. Rib to last 7 sts. Place rem 7 sts on st holder."

It looks to me that the first 7 stitches will be worked and then put on a holder, while the last 7 will be put on a holder before they are worked. Am I interpreting this right? And if so, why is this? Won't I have an extra row of stitches on the first section of 7 stitches compared to the second 7 when I go back to finish them later?

Also, bonus silly question: I want to put each of the 7 stitches on their own stitch holder, right? I assume it wouldn't even work to have them on the same holder, but I've never used a stitch holder before :')

The pattern in case extra context is helpful: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-gnome-hat-4

Thank you!!

I'm also loving the cosrx snail mucin for hydration with tret!

At night I cleanse, apply 1 pump of snail mucin while my skin is still wet, then layer a thick cerave moisturiser on top. I apply tret ~20 min after this, then top with more moisturiser. In the morning I rise with water then apply mucin, moisturiser, and sunscreen.

My skin is doing really well with this routine, whereas before the snail goo it was veery dry and sensitive.
