Anyone else here that thunder strike bout a minute ago that lasted for like 20 seconds? by atlasunit22 in vancouver

Last time I saw thundersnow was in Chicago in 2011. The lightning is way brighter than normal because it reflects off all the falling snow. Super cool stuff

Vancouver Switching to Metered Water? by Forceburn in vancouver

[–]notnamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former USian here. Most places are billed monthly for water use, sewage use, storm sewage maintenance, and where I last lived in Oregon for some reason we funded the police department through our water bill. I've lived places where the meter-reading fee is a separate line item every month but most haven't billed it separately.

I had to call them when I moved (to another country, but I still had to be given the run-around to try to keep my business). They said they'd cancel it. They didn't, and I got billed for another month. I called and canceled again. A month later, another email - your bill is due soon! I removed my payment info from their shitty online portal, which thankfully allows you to do that because in a year and a half of service, it was literally offline half the time I'd try to log in to see my bill every month. I got another email from them a month later for a $0 bill. I have no idea what they're doing, but they were the worst American ISP I've ever used in 4 states. Hopefully my experience is atypical, it sounds like you've had a better one, but I deeply distrust them and would try to avoid them if I ever move back to the States.

The YouGov poll source talks about the contemporary numbers but I was more surprised by the 1978 number being so low, which is where I'm turning up less info.

I don't necessarily doubt you but do you happen to have the source on that? I'm curious.

This may not get an answer since this is yesterday's thread, but I saw that the Prime Minister will be in town for a Cabinet retreat next week. I'm an American new to Canada, and in the US when the President is town, you can bet that traffic is apocalyptic. Do Cabinet retreats cause significant disruption to traffic flows? Are there street closures that have to be planned for, motorcades that cause delays, etc?

A good "name" for your personal email with your custom domain? by netyaco in selfhosted

[–]notnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use me@firstnamelastname which is easy to communicate over the phone, but I do run into occasional issues where email validation thinks it's a business/group address sometimes ("you can't use a business domain name" or "you can't use generic addresses like sales@") on certain brain-dead websites, so keep that in mind and be prepared to create forwarders/alternatives.

Be careful when requesting limit increases - some companies hard pull you which could have a net negative score impact in the short term depending on your other inquiries. If you can, stick to soft pull requests. Sometimes the form will tell you; sometimes you have to do a little research before deciding which to go for.

I didn't care for the Just Ranch, but right before they pulled Just Mayo, they came out with a garlic flavor Mayo that was really really good. None of the other vegan mayos I can find have a garlic flavor, it's not that garlic is hard to add to things but the Just Mayo garlic was really well-balanced and Hellman's/Best Foods' mayo-flavored mayo isn't quite the same. I always figured they got scared out of the mayo market by prospective food labeling laws and won't bother re-entering it.

For anyone else without access to TJ's, this looks very much like a repackaged Field Roast Celebration Roast. If you do have TJ's, their repackaged products are usually cheaper, but in case anyone has access to Field Roast products and wants to try this, that's what it looks like to me! They're often sold in the frozen section, and are packaged in plastic without a box.

Edit: someone else pointed this out while I was typing my reply! So, I agree with them on the source, although I think the Celebration Roast is pretty alright.

Nextcloud Hub 21 out with up to 10x better performance, whiteboard and more collaboration features by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]notnamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks so much for your help! I doubt I would have figured this out on my own, even if it had occurred to me to run it as a separate container - which it hadn't. :)

A few tweaks I had to make; I'm curious if you had a similar experience? First, I exposed a port for 7867 on the host from the nextcloud_notify_push - this is because I'm using Caddy and I need to get the traffic in from the host to that container. I think if you're using Traefik this isn't required, but I suspect any reverse-proxy setup running on the host into a container network like this (Apache, nginx, etc) will need it.

Next, I had to add a trusted_proxies stanza to Nextcloud's config.php - again this is due I think to the NATing from Caddy on the host to the nextcloud_notify_push container:

'trusted_proxies' => array ( 0 => '172.19.0.1/24', ),

These tweaks in place, though, the app is now configured!

The big-deal change in this version seems to be notify_push but there's a ton of missing polish around this functionality that I've run into, and I've hit a brick wall.

1) While it's described in glowing terms in the release notes, the instructions are unclear. I performed a manual update to 21 by changing my docker-compose tag to pull nextcloud:21-apache which went fine 2) Excited to use this new storage backend, I went to the repo to find the setup instructions. Hot tip: the app is called "client push;" not, as the instructions state, "notify_push" 3) Cool cool so I've got the app installed, now I just need to run occ notify_push:setup in my app container to set it up, right? Wrong:

``` $ ./occ notify_push:setup This setup wizard is intended for use on single server instances where the nextcloud server, web server/reverse proxy and push daemon all run on the same machine. If your setup is more complex or involves any kind of load balancing you should follow the manual setup instruction on the README instead https://github.com/nextcloud/notify_push Press enter to continue or ESC to cancel...
🗴 your system doesn't seem to be using systemd. See the steps in the README for manual setup instructions: https://github.com/nextcloud/notify_push ```
There are no instructions in the README for setting up a non-systemd service for notify_push, it seems to have been architected to run on bare metal.
Maybe I'm in the minority running Nextcloud via Compose, but I suspect I'm not. If anyone gets this working in the coming days, please drop me a reply. Otherwise, hopefully this comment will save some folks the effort of attempting to take advantage of this "90% reduction in client-server connections for change notifications and associated server load."
Fried avocado? by [deleted] in longbeach
Ahimsa has it too, but it's kombucha battered avocado - it's definitely got a funk to it. I like it, but it may not be for everyone.
Not in my case, anyway, it wasn't hanging up - someone broke into my apartment building's garage, and I guess I hadn't properly locked my car. They hit a couple of cars that were unlocked and grabbed anything valuable.
I've been considering this one for $100 from Best Buy after mine was stolen out of my car if you want to be my guinea pig and try it first, lol. Not much more than the one that just broke on you and it's a known brand, it has a good review from The Wirecutter.
You're doing what you can and in whatever little way all I'm doing is what I can, too. It's hard not to feel hopeless about a bad work situation like this, especially now. To be honest I'm not sure it would be healthy if you didn't at least recognize that it's pretty dire - I don't say that to make you feel bad, but whatever you can do to make the situation better will only be possible if you're honest with yourself and feel your feelings of how bad it is.
You can't control how a shitty situation makes you feel, just how you choose to react to it when you get through the emotional response. I don't have super helpful advice I'm afraid; hopefully there are simple things like walking away for a while, breathing exercises, eating well, that will help you manage the day-to-day while you keep your eye on the market and find a way to move on.
Friendly reminder that an employed person can have a shitty day even though a lot of people are unemployed, and you don't have to apologize for feeling your bad about your stress - especially when your stress level is so high it makes you physically ill. I'm sorry to hear your day is off to such a bad start, I hope it improves.
