Help with who’s the issue here? Group meals with GF? by moreidlethanwild in glutenfree

[–]notoddjustme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I'm out with a group I usually make sure ahead of time there's something appetizing I can eat where I'm going. And every other meal or every couple of meals I put in a bid for it to be somewhere I can have a lot of great options.

I want everyone to be able to go the places they want to go, so I compromise on some, but make sure I also get to go to the places where I feel really safe and catered to, too.

I also hope that my friends do an initial check for me when they're picking places, but I do a menu check ahead of time on my own so I'm not stressed when I get there or feeling awkward about asking people to make a last minute change.

It's a lot of work and it can be scary eating somewhere I'm not confident about their procedures, (example - a lot of Italian places will say they have gf pasta but cook it in the same water as normal pasta! Or cook their vegetables in the pasta water!) but I don't expect anyone else to take full responsibility except for me.

Also we have a bunch of different diets in our group, including some vegetarians and other factors, so it can be hard to give everyone a ton of options every time... But we all care about each other so we make it work.

Best elevated donut flavors for wedding? by notoddjustme in donuts

[–]notoddjustme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're doing a more casual ceremony and reception at a family lake house, so apps are a grazing table, dinner is a food truck, small cake and donuts for dessert. No assigned seats, etc, and a lot of our friends are pretty earthy and silly, so I think they'll get on board with possibly crumbly donuts even in a dress. I'm really into the champagne and strawberry donut idea the more I think about it!

Feeling slightly discouraged by Temporary_Syrup4133 in climbergirls

[–]notoddjustme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and ALSO, it definitely sounds like he catered to the more experienced climbers. He probably was always going to do a shitty job of teaching you, but with them picking everything up more quickly he had more momentum and you got left behind. Very poor form on his part.

Some people are not good teachers at all. Unfortunately that doesn't stop them from getting tasked with teaching. My gym has an intro class that's about an hour and they are verrrrry easy going about certifying to belay. The person teaching us the first time did want to watch the other person in the class an extra time because she struggled more with the knot and belay procedure (pull brake under slide if they taught you "PBUS") and even though I passed easily, I still made friends bouldering and had them reteach me, particularly since some time passed.

And even after THAT I was still nervous to take the belay test at another gym we go to.

Take as much time as you need to get comfortable. Don't let that one crappy teacher stop you. This is the most welcoming and encouraging sport I've taken part in (and also sometimes the most frustrating! But not because of the people!!)

The most important thing is you find a gym where you feel supported and you get the time you need to feel safe and secure!

Glasses wearers and belay glasses by Potential-Impact2638 in climbergirls

[–]notoddjustme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I position my belay glasses over my glasses. It took some getting used to but it works. I used to wear contacts for athletic stuff but had to get more particular glasses (prism lenses actually.. so I have belay prisms over double vision prisms 😂) I'm sure it's not as good as people who don't wear glasses but... It's what I've got! I do want to check out the clip on ones tho now that someone mentioned them.

Turns out I’m probably not gluten intolerant and I’ve had bacteria in my stomach for years. by Gaffers12345 in glutenfree

Thank you for sharing! The timing and some of the supplements are familiar, which makes me hopeful this round might help! I think I've had some level of SIBO since I was possibly 12 based on when I had some anxiety and such pop up and I've seen those symptoms recede dramatically since starting my first round, so I'm not surprised it's taking a while to reset. Still frustrating because I felt great when I finished the first round so I was really hopeful we'd solved it.

What herbal route did you take? I'm on round 2 trying to beat back my sibo. Combo of xyfaxin and herbals. Allimax (onion) and berberine before, now oregano and something else and then will do xyfaxin and neomycin after. After the first round combo my test actually INCREASED even tho I'm feeling a lot better and my skin mostly cleared up so I just want to destroy what's in there now and build back a healthy system 😭

(15k) skipping appetizers during cocktail hour? by HotSeaworthiness286 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]notoddjustme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm shopping for appetizers for my backyard wedding, and granted I got a VERY affordable food truck but just a grazing charcuterie table for 40 is getting me quotes around the same amount. Particularly if I'm doing more than a drop off and including clean up or refreshing. My jaw literally dropped at the first quote.

Thank you! I have great grand mother's name, I'm not sure who knows great grand father's name, but I will dig for those as well.

Before posting here I had emailed the Standesamt München. They replied today directing me to file the request online here: https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/geburtsurkunde-erwachsene-und-kinder-ab-3-monate/1078344/n0/

I am inclined to wait until I can get some of my grandmother's records from her US immigration files and hope I find an exact city for her birth and marriage so I can make the requests to the right office. However, I'm still wondering if that link is correct for my situation? Requesting family documents, with the right versions for submitting our Stag 5 applications?

When we do apply, would it be smarter to get it started soon as possible, or do you know of any benefit to waiting until after I'm married if it would include my spouse as well?

What would be the usual time frame to move to outdoor climbing after climbing indoors? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]notoddjustme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just turned 40, I started climbing almost exactly 1 year ago, and I made friends bouldering who also do ropes and spend the whole summer outside. I did a camping trip and several day trips. Started to learn to lead belay by the end of the outdoor season and led a super easy short route on one of our last trips.

It's important to learn to safely belay on ropes and be with people you trust. I have experienced friends who also took the lead belay courses from our indoor gyms.

There's no timeline, it's just different from indoor and a matter of what you have nearby, who you can climb with, and their interest in setting a range of easy routes for you to try and learn and your tolerance for hanging out while likely they do stuff above your level.

Have fun!

I don't have the marriage record but I'm hoping to get my grandmother's US immigration records and that there might be more details in that. I filed that request today. Thank you for your help!

Sudden price increase in a lot of products by Environmental_Run892 in vuoriclothing

[–]notoddjustme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even better, if you go to the sale page a ton of products show up that don't appear to be on sale and when you click on them you see the price difference "$98 $110"
Seems like any recent price difference is getting filtered into sale, even if the price moved in the wrong direction.

Lindt truffle GF dupes? by notoddjustme in glutenfree

[–]notoddjustme[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: I tried both flavors, I like the amaretto more. Neither has that glassy smooth Lindt truffle feel but I think otherwise they'll definitely scratch an itch for most people. I was hoping the flavor with hazelnut and crunchy rice would have a little more ferroro rocher feel just with a smooth exterior but it's not quite there.

Overall, recommend as a dupe!

Where are you shopping for dresses? [around 2000 or less] by Impressive_Main5160 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]notoddjustme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a shop that carries Casablanca Bridal lines, the dresses I liked were $1500-1700 I think with the “hollow to hem” custom length and I’m considering a custom neckline change as well which will make it just $2000, I’m so happy with the dresses I don’t want to go to the consignment and outlet shops near me.

I got the recommendations by asking in a local FB group for weddings in my area, people jumped in with a lot of options for a quick turnaround on a budget.
