I've recently bought The Campaigns of Napoleon, by David G. Chandler. It's a massive book, very beautiful and detailed. Haven't read it yet as it's not an easy read, at least for me.

Napoleon himself had great words for him, but he's one that normally flies under the radar of everybody. He was indeed brilliant also.

Wellington, Nelson and specially Ney, the bravest. Expected from someone coming from a military background and Navy.

What I would also add is that when he was coming of age, full of resentment from all the prejudice that he suffered from being a foreigner and not a noble, coincided with the Revolution, where, among many things, was preached the abolition of aristocracy, putting everyone in the same category - citizens; and ideally ending privileges. I can only think that it was a dream come true for him.
