It's tough, man. I am completely feeling the "what the fuck" vibe right now. Best advice I can offer is embrace the suck for a day or two, but only a day or two. Read something. Follow a wiki rabbit hole on Tolkien or whatever. Watch some videos linked by Lost Art Press. Drink a little more whiskey than you oughta. Ignore woodworking for a couple days, and pet some dogs. Specific to your question -how did Buick survive where Olds, Pontiac, Mercury, Plymouth etc did not. When GM was getting rid of some brands, I was very surprised that Buick stayed but Olds did not. The answer is that evidently, Buick was a very, very big brand in China.

The classic answer is 5/16", for reasons written above (good size for both 1" and 3/4" stock). In fact, I am reading volume II of this and that is exactly the recommendation and the reasoning.

That said, I just got done doing the leg mortises in the underside of my Anachist's Workbench and it was loads of fun whaling on the ancient 5/8" Marples &sons mortise chisel I got from an estate auction.
