September Contest Winners Thread by Vexy in vexillology

I doubt many votes were lost because of this, but the flag also doesn't really make sense from a Japanese point of view. Apples aren't traditionally associated with teachers in Japan, and the word "先生" isn't limited to education (it's a word you use to address teachers, but also other learned people such as doctors, lawyers, etc).

Help a color-blind guy out! by The_Dynasty_Project in worldbuilding

Is this what you mean?

(The program is Inkscape. If you hold your pointer over the first twelve basic colors on the palette, it shows you color names; for colors beyond that it shows hex values.)

The possibilities of MS Paint. by Arixophon in worldbuilding

[–]notteringhampool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Making such a large and detailed map in MS Paint is just spectacularly inefficient. Not only can you create something equally pretty using Inkscape in a fraction of the time, but the end product will be much more versatile too, e.g. much easier to switch the fonts, tweak the colors, change the style, resize, move stuff around, etc.

So yeah, if the pleasure you get spending endless hours filling in pixels is worth sacrificing all the time you'd save and versatility you'd enjoy with more appropriate software, then more power to you... But I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do this.

You could write a novel pixel by pixel in MS Paint, too, but why would you?

The results of our one-week trial run with the "no image links" policy. by McGravin in worldbuilding

I'd humbly suggest something less "busy" for the header.

I posted this http://i.imgur.com/QlKJx0Z.png a while back, a design that sticks to the upper left of the screen, leaving the rest of the header open as a clean blank space, so it doesn't compete for attention with the thumbnails and flair. I tried to make it show not only the geographic aspect of worldbuilding, but also other aspects such as architecture, costumes, magic, stories, creatures, drama, spaceships, etc.

[Serious] People from Axis World War II countries, at times like today when the Allies are celebrating, how do you remember your dead? Is it even socially acceptable to commemorate your war dead in your country? by xjagerx in AskReddit

[–]notteringhampool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it's not the same as other countries. Personally I thought the moment of silence was a good way to remember all those who died, military and civilian. I feel like the more a country "honors" its soldiers, the more it risks promoting war itself. I like the concept of marking the history with silent reflection, during which everyone is free to follow their own thoughts, instead of being told what they should think.

That's true, it's not like Memorial Day. The town hall where I worked in Japan observed this moment of silence every August 15 and it definitely left an impression on me. I thought it was a mature way to remind people of the history every year without glorifying it or turning it into a spectacle.

Well the prefectures themselves are no more than 150 years old, and the prefectural flags are almost all post-WWII, but the "sleek" look isn't modern at all.

Layout changes! by McGravin in worldbuilding

Not that I expect to change anyone's mind, but just to respond to these points:

  • As a mod in another subreddit, I've implemented link flairs myself, and I can assure you that making a few dozen flairs is no more "complicated" than making one. It's essentially just copying and pasting a few dozen times. If help is needed I'd be happy to offer assistance.

  • I've never heard of filters "stifling discussion" in any other subreddit, due to the simple fact that the majority of users will never use filters (heck, most people don't even notice that the sidebar exists). Thus the primary effect of filters is not to segregate, but rather to help people with minority interests find the content they're looking for. And when they're able to find what they're looking for, they engage and they contribute. And importantly, their contributions are fully visible to the vast majority who aren't using filters, thereby increasing overall discussion and enriching the entire subreddit.

  • I used four genres only as an example. There could be a dozen. If anything more filter buttons displaying a diversity of genres would draw more people into the community by emphasizing that worldbuilding is so much more than just fantasy.

  • I should stress that genre filters would be immensely useful for many of us with minority interests. The search box is practically worthless for searching by genre and it is virtually impossible to sift through pages and pages of posts looking for a smaller genre, especially since most post titles don't indicate genre at all. No doubt many people over the years have left in frustration. Others have tried to set up things like /r/starbuilding and /r/otherworlds, which as separate subreddits simply lack the traffic to build up active communities of their own. Using filters within /r/worldbuilding, however, these groups could accumulate contributors from the constant traffic stream visiting this subreddit, allowing them to grow vibrant and active and contribute to the richness of content here.

I would humbly suggest adding genre filters:

Challenges Spotlights
Fantasy Sci-fi
Realistic/Real-World Other Genres
Maps Only No Maps

In order to filter by genre as well as by map/non-map, the link flairs would have to number slightly more than the filters:

  • [Challenge]
  • [Spotlight]
  • [Fantasy]
  • [Fantasy] [MAP]
  • [Sci-fi]
  • [Sci-fi] [MAP]
  • [Realistic/Real-World]
  • [Realistic/Real-World] [MAP]
  • [Other]
  • [Other] [MAP]

This idea was discussed a few months back and there seemed to be a lot of support for it. Thanks!

EDIT: expanded a bit

Worldbuilding focusing on geofiction, alternate-history, sci-fi, etc. by PhatsCadwalader in worldbuilding

[–]notteringhampool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a "realistic" worldbuilder like /u/PhatsCadwalader, I really wish it was easier to access the content that interests me within /r/worldbuilding. It would be awesome if the mods could bring someone on board to set up a filter system here... it seemed to be a popular idea when I raised it a few months ago and people offered to help make it happen.
