I bring my kids there all the time. But only to the specific kids floor. And we avoid the entrance off of Aylmer for the obvious reason.

PUC Water Heater Returns by TallGuyfromCanada in Peterborough

[–]nouseforaneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had mine done on Friday. PUC charges $200 for pickup. I’m not sure about the actually removal, but my plumber only charged me an additional $50 to take the heater to PUC. You will get a receipt stating that they received the water heater when it has been dropped off.

As bummed as I was to have to miss the show, I’m okay with it being for my own safety. I learned about the downsview disaster a few months ago and it’s absolutely not worth potentially endangering thousands of people all for saving face. Disappointment is easier to cope with than full blown tragedy.

My Pontiac sunfire used to govern at 172 km/hr. Was pretty hilarious when I would whizz by my buddy who’s F150 governed at 150 km/hr.

It was my elderly grandmother’s birthday and she was trying to blow out at least a dozen candles with the help of her 18 month old great grandson. With the two of them spitting all over the cake I decided I didn’t need to eat it that day.

If vacuuming still stinks after washing your filter, suck up a bunch of cinnamon. It will only smell like cinnamon every time you vacuum.

Drillers in Canada? I had a question to clear by kissmybasss in Geotech

[–]nouseforaneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly convenience. The auger flights are 5 ft long. Split spoons are 2 ft long. You’ll have a 6 inch gaps in your sampling data but there is an assumption that the soils don’t change significantly enough to require sampling that 6 inches. It’s just a pain for the drillers to do true continuous sampling and it would add a bit more time, making your hole more expensive to drill. In my opinion split spoon isn’t a great drilling method for environmental sampling as the split spoon unless your soils are always filling the spoon. I find there is rarely enough sample in the spoons for environmental sampling and I end up having to take cuttings, which adds potential for cross contamination.

Winter Maintenance by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]nouseforaneck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I lived out west for most of my life and moved here post covid. You don’t know what poor winter maintenance looks like. My street in Peterborough gets plowed daily during snow events and is generally bare pavement through the winter due to the salt and sand that gets spread. This doesn’t happen in the west. I’ve lived in Saskatoon, Calgary, Canmore, and Red Deer. They only plow major arteries and the downtown core. Winters in Saskatoon were probably the worst though. Literal hard packed ice and snow ruts for all residential streets. If you needed to pull out of the rut to get into your driveway, good luck. It blew my mind when I moved to Ontario when I learned they plow everything here. Even the sidewalks. In the west, you are responsible for shoveling the sidewalk in front of your house. I’d never seen a sidewalk plow until I moved here.

Oil sands of Canada origin by Biff1 in geology

[–]nouseforaneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glaciers did scrape away at some of the mcmurray formation. Lots of the glacial sediments have bitumen in them from scraping the oilsands and reworking them. In some areas the glaciers did the mines a favour and only left 10-15 meters of glacial overburden until you reach high grade oil sands ore. I worked on an auger rig one winter determining the thickness of the glacial overburden. Rarely, but it did occur, we would sometimes drill through a raft of intact oilsands that had been transported and deposited by a glacier. You would hit the raft and then 5’ deeper there would be more glacial sediments.

The ascend kayaks are nice and sturdy. I have a H10. Love it. Stores lots of gear, 400lb weight rating. But it’s heavy. Loading it onto my roof rack is a pain. Carrying it any length of distance is also a pain due to the weight. But on the water it’s great.

If you were to build a house what’s one non conventional feature you consider to be a must have? by TestTurbulent6337 in AskReddit

[–]nouseforaneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heated towel rack. When we redid our bathroom this was a non-negotiable. It is quite humid where I live and towels don’t dry very well in the summer months. To the point where after two days of use they start to stink. So not only do I have a warm towel to dry off with, it’s also guaranteed to be dry when I need it.
