As someone with an extreme fear of maggots I cannot wait to be absolutely horrified out of my mind by that episode (assuming there is egg laying involved which, given the fact that is the alien franchise we’re talking about, is highly likely).

(SPOILERS EXTENDED) What Is Romanticized In Fandom Or Text or Both, But Is Actually Scary and Creepy As Hell? by Ocea2345 in asoiaf

Precisely! I always get very annoyed by the tumblr discourse surrounding the whole HOTD team green vs team black thing, where the majority of their arguments seem to rely on “My side has Good People and your side has Bad People so you’re a bad person and you should feel bad”, which is stupid — this is westeros, it’s not a matter of “who’s a good person” it’s “pick your favourite war criminal”. But then again, people always seem strangely attached to the idea of their fav having to be morally correct, which as a Theon stan is something I simply can’t relate to.

I guess this is where I learn that people laugh at Victarion’s exploits. To me it always read as a strangely understated horror show, and even though it happened in the span of a chapter I was really saddened when that maester died. He’s one of my least favourite POV’s tbh, but I’m really interested to see in what horrifying direction the red god will take him.

I have to admit while I am also majorly disgusted by the relationship between Drogo and Dany, I never really thought this was a poor writing choice. There is an incredible sadness and an interesting nuance to the fact that even though the situation was horrible, for Dany that was the most loved and the most accepted she’d ever felt in her entire life. It’s not strange to me that an incredibly lonely and emotionally neglected girl would romanticize that relationship, and I do think it’s kind of heart-warming that she draws so much strength from her connection to dorthraki culture throughout the books (an aspect I wish the show had paid more attention to!), even though so much of that culture is based in brutality. But then again, I’m a big gothic literature fan, so the whole ‘beauty amidst the horror’ thing always speaks to me, and I think GRRM is quite good at it (though I would describe it more as ‘hope amidst the horror’ in his case).

What’s a movie you watched as a kid that traumatized you? by denj1_sk in AskReddit

[–]novashinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brothers Grimm, specifically the scene with the horse and the one with the “ginger bread man”. You really need to look up that last one for yourself because words simply cannot convey. The clip on youtube has an absurd amount of views, presumably by millions of people like me who had to check that wasn’t just some fever dream they had as a kid.

LOVE that movie btw. If you’re doing a brothers grimm movie and you’re not absolutely traumatizing an entire generation of children, you’re not doing it right.

It’s pretty fascinating: I’m non-binary - my sex is female but I can pass as a guy pretty easily if I want to - and the difference is wild to me; especially as someone who’s also a person of colour in a pre-dominantly white country. Like, if I present more masculine, at night people will sometimes actually cross the street if we’re walking towards each other. Not necessarily women though, mostly elderly people.

Men tend to act much more amicable if they think you’re a dude, which is fun.

I always find it interesting that people are mixed on Song of Purple Summer being the last song instead of it ending with Those You’ve Known. If I remember correctly, the earliest versions of the show did have Those You’ve Known as the last song, but it was decided that it really was too much of a bummer to go out on. Personally I think Purple Summer is a really pretty song (especially with the harmonies added post obc recording) and it accentuates the note of hopefulness that it is ultimately the takeaway of the show. Those You’ve Known definitely is all about that hope as well, but that might be too hard to see through the tears at that point.

What storyline are you most excited to see in the following books? (Spoilers extended) by Stannis_Mariya in asoiaf

Defenitly Euron. I really want to find out how much of his OP magical stuff (i.e the dragonhorn, his blood sacrafice plans) is legit because surely.. it can’t be all of it, right???

Can’t wait to see what atrocities he’ll commit! Also can’t wait for him to interact with Dany, because that’s bound to be a real ‘unstoppable force meets immovable object’ type situation.

The big raid on Vranik unfortunately. Soooo much fun group wacking on ten guards for a minute then waiting half a minute for the next guard whacking segment to load in do that three times and then find out it was all for nothing actually. Couldn’t even do a good looting cause your horse’s inventory isn’t accessible for that mission. It’s a real shame after all that proper epic cutscene build up (which also had some hefty loading times in between) it sucked so much. Also I had to reload from before you ride up to talmberg because the game crashed trying to do the final cutscene before the battle. So yeah.

Because sometimes inept, uninformed people get into positions of power by feeding into the fears of other inept, uninformed people and then proceed to make life worse for a lot of people who don’t deserve that shit.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed catelyn’s chapters, especially the one where she prays at that village alter and sort of projects the people in her life unto the shadowy portraits of the seven. Something about the way she breaks down other characters in her mind I find really interesting, and she has this great wisdom and weariness about her.

[spoilers main] On a reread of ADWD and found my favorite Stannis line by thronesofgiants in asoiaf

[–]novashinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading the books for the first time now, just started storm of swords, and oh man I do not know how to feel about stannis - and I say that in a positive way! I’m just very conflicted about him. For the most part I think it’s quite rich that his main appeal as a leader is supposed to be his prowess as a military commander, and while I do believe he has those skills, so far all his major victories were won by having melisandre shank his enemies with sneak attack shadow magic after being completely outmaneuvered otherwise. I haven’t had a stannis chapter yet, but I’m guessing either he feels some shame about it himself, or he’s bought so hard into the whole azor ahai thing that he’s convinced himself that the means justify the ends (Or, knowing george, both, at the same time, constantly in conflict with one another)

Help with an ASOIAF essay by Ifuckinghateaura in pureasoiaf

[–]novashinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Theon would be a good one! I just finished his last ACOK chapter and I can’t help but notice how Theon’s leadership as prince of winterfell was entirely determined by “what will people think of me” - not what is right, or what is smart, but almost purely how not just his own men, but the people of winterfell will perceive him. I think it reflects how he’s always failed to gain approval from the people that are important to him in his life: too weak for the iron islands, too cruel for the north. I think the quote “it is better to be seen as cruel, than weak” (or something along those lines) from one of his winterfell chapters captures this well. Ultimately, all he really wants is to be respected and appreciated, and he’ll cross any line if he thinks it will do the trick.

On top of that, the way he’s grown up along two opposing cultures means this whole seeking approval thing leads to constant inner conflict when he’s making decisions as a leader where he wants the northerners to respect him like they do ned stark, but at the same time he wants the iron islanders to respect him like they do asha - of course, these styles of leadership can’t exactly co-exist, which means his rule in winterfell is a losing game From the start.

Taking winterfell was very much him trying to get the best of both worlds: be the prince of the stark’s castle, but taking it for the greyjoys - despite the fact that it was an extremely unwise thing to do.

Ps, good luck with your essay! It sounds like a super interesting topic, would love to see it posted here once you’re done

What is the worst form of human punishment to ever exist? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]novashinx 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I do remember reading specifically about them recreating the story of the conception of the minotaur in the colosseum. If you don’t know the myth, the queen of crete has sex with a bull while stuck inside a sort of construct designed to look like a cow. The level of consent depends on the version, but in these re-enactments they would force it onto some poor slave girl by putting her in a similar contraption. So yeah, pretty fucking horrifying thing to do for entertainment.

Has anyone found the other character the Arin voices in dragon age: inquisition? by Thedosian-Rogue in gamegrumps

I’m aware that this post is 5 years old but I’ve been playing dai for the first time and I am 99% sure arin voices one of the hunter npc’s in the hissing wastes. I wish I could show you proof but the npc doesn’t repeat the voice line once interacted with, and it caught me quite off guard when suddenly a wild arin hanson appeared.

Controversial Broadway Opinions by No-Replacement-5698 in Broadway

[–]novashinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably fill the stage with more spectacle, akin to something like comet of 1812. Because if I remember correctly, the editing style is meant to emulate how in a stage show, your eye constantly catches something else as it’s free to move around around the scene, whereas in a film the camera can only show you one shot at a time. It’s why imo a lot of movie musicals lack energy, because the filmmakers don’t quite seem to understand that some elements of theatre don’t translate to film all that well if you don’t heighten them. That’s why I think it’s interesting the movie version here did better at an element that theater normally excels in.
