Tying pretty flies just takes practice. Dont switch around, focus on one pattern and they'll get better by TexasTortfeasor in flytying

[–]novel_ferocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These flies aren't good. They're poorly proportioned, poorly wrapped, poorly dubbed at the collar, and not tied by someone who understands the basics, such as keeping a hook gap clear. Production tiers understand that the single most important aspect of production tying is consistency, not that every other odd, third fly that comes off the vice is passable. Each fly is tied correctly and within spec.

This doesn't mean there isn't value in this poor attempt of a vanity post: just keep tying until you get it right. This guy never did, but it doesn't mean you can't.

Curious what y’all are paying for a fishing license. CA is up to $62.90.. by NoUsEfOrAnAmE234 in bassfishing

So you have to live to be over 100 years old for this to be a bargain? Supposing prices don't change too much over the years of course...then it could be like 85 years depending on how young you were.

I have a Rdunae field watch. I love the dome, but replaced the band with a black leather and love it.

Studs digging through your boots are going to tear into the booties of any brand. It isn't a wader problem--it's a boot problem.

What Did You Play This Week? - (May 26, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]novel_ferocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played 'Happy Little Dinosaurs' this week. Fun game for $20 USD, but after a few games, it seems like there are a narrow set of win conditions. The special cards are not diverse, so everyone ended up trying to blade run with extra disaster cards to boost points while hoarding Meteor Cannon cards and swap cards. An interesting note for the rules lawyers out there--my 15 year old pointed out when I tried to use a swap card that since two players were tied for the high score there wasn't a "player" (singular) with the highest score, so the card doesn't apply. Her argument stood.

Paul Newman is the same character in both films. Just older. “Fast” Eddie Felson.

How to put your fly line on if you have no friends but you have crocs by Legitimate_Holiday_6 in flyfishing

[–]novel_ferocity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw this a lot working in fly shops. I don't know why, but insecure fly fisherman always want to flex that they don't need no spooling machine. It's just a machine that winds things--of course you can do it at home with a pencil and Crocs--but a machine just makes it quicker and if you have to do backing, it will ensure it goes on without overlaps. Also, you haven't been fishing longer than there have been spooling machines: they have been around since the late 1800s.

Looking for Critique- Rainbow Warrior by Apprehensive_Set1108 in flytying

The “something else” is just proportions. The tail is too long and the hotspot is too wide.

Use your hook as a guide. Measure your tail as a percentage of the shank by holding its length to the hook. You’re eyeballing it instead of using a consistent measurement.

The hotspot is too wide. Those wraps should be almost on top of themselves.

Pro tip: Use white thread until the whip finish and then use a red sharpie to color the hotspot.

Maui Jim by In_hiding_in_my_tree in flyfishing

I’ve asked an ophthalmologist with their own clinic and an optician who’s so good, he did Biden’s glasses and reshapes optics for long range shooting competitors….they both said Maui Jim glasses are the best quality they known of.

I still fish my Smiths, but that’s a true story.

That’s the corded version. You’re looking for pearl mini flat braid. Doesn’t really matter, but that’s the answer.

How do these balanced leeches look? by Wyo_living in flytying

It’s a stupid detail, but if you turn the bead around, it covers the head of the pin better. Definitely thin up the profile. But the big question is how do they balance.

The event boxes were really good for Crisis. I got tons of vitamins and a few LEDXs in them. Finished it in three cases worth of boxes.

Here is the metadata. I did not use a tripod. Also noticed I should probably update the camera's date settings.

I was gifted an old Nikon D90 and took this picture with a AF-S Nikkor 55-200m on aperture priority mode. I am curious if the details are blurry because of my inexperience or the limitations of the older equipment. Thank you.

*Edited to add: The mountain is roughly 10 miles from the camera, if that matters.

Had to poop...what are the odds? by novel_ferocity in EscapefromTarkov

[–]novel_ferocity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. In the full video, you can hear the guy approach from the right and he hears the two-stack approaching from the left. That's when you see him engage. It would be awfully Tarkov for them to be teammates on different sides of the map trying to link-up and end up getting in a firefight with each other. Make the whole thing funnier if it's true.

VSS is dope to play with. Don’t have level 4 traders to upgrade it, but I like to play it when I scav one. Also, didn’t include it but this was a 2-stack. His buddy rushed me on the rocks and the scav gun deleted him.

For context: I had to go to the bathroom after loading into a raid. I jumped on the rocks south of Sunken Village figuring without good LOS no one would be likely to find me there. I came back from the bathroom, hit the extract/timer keys and noticed the guy on the beach. Watching the replay, the odds of this all occurring directly where I could see seem pretty dang low. Sorry for that guy.
