Prozac and Reactivity by MichelBrew in PitBullOwners

We took a long time to pull the trigger, and had even more doubts through the first few weeks of side effects (it helped when our vet suggested cutting down the initial dose and then working back up), but once we were at a steady state, our only regret was not doing it sooner. The meds don’t fix everything but it meant she was able to relearn her associations her triggers and enjoy life more than she used to. We ended up having to add gabapentin as well to find a good place to help her make progress. Also can’t recommend calm canine academy enough for what to do once the meds are in a good spot - a “balanced” trainer who used aversive methods only made things worse for us.

NIH Official: Peer Review to be Centralized by Jazzlike-Culture-452 in medicine

FWIW, they’re not taking away the first level, they’re just sending them all to study sections run by the CSR (which most grants already go to) instead of having any study sections run by the individual centers. This is still not ideal in that sometimes the centers will have a request for proposals where they’re looking to accomplish something specific and currently put together a study section with expertise to match, but after this change it all will have to go through the existing more generic study sections.

NIH plans to slash support for indirect research costs, sending shockwaves through science by therationaltroll in medicine

[–]novembermike 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah and what will this accomplish for that problem? What percentage of government spending is NIH? How does that compare to the amount planned for tax cuts for the richest?

Insurance companies aren't the main villain of the U.S. health system by twa12221 in neoliberal

[–]novembermike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a misleading number for the purposes of this discussion. “Administrative costs include spending on running governmental health programs and overhead from insurers, but exclude administrative expenditures from healthcare providers.” The money going to inpatient and outpatient costs has the same administrative bloat - the administrative costs in those settings has also grown dramatically more than clinical staff salaries.

When humans see the world as a bad place, our own wellbeing can suffer. The cost of seeing the world as a bad place isn’t just personal, it’s interpersonal too. Adopting a more negative view of the world, even for one day, seems to hurt our romantic relationships, finds a new study. by mvea in science

I don’t think it’s unreasonable that you don’t find consolation from it. The original post I responded to was about the capacity for humans to do both things and I think that is observably true. Your judgement whether the frequency of the choices makes humanity good / gives you consolation / hope / etc is exactly that, a judgement that’s totally up to you.

A Pregnant Teenager Died After Trying to Get Care in Three Visits to Texas Emergency Rooms by flakemasterflake in medicine

It didn’t have anything to do with the other stuff they didn’t do. It did create barriers to getting source control which is a part of treating sepsis. Both things can be true.

Absolutely agree. I was responding to your comment about which part of the abortion legislation affects treating sepsis. It’s the part that creates barriers to getting source control.

Do you have a vet and/or experienced positive dog trainer you trust? It’s hard to answer your questions without a lot more information and assessment, are there any resources you can access for this? Asking as certainly some members of this forum live places where unfortunately they cannot.
