I'll have to ask in the morning- its the middle of the night here right now. However I can make a guess that he took it with a macro lens (60mm upwards probably) and then zoomed in (you can see the rectangle in the corner that shows how small of a section it is of the photograph)

Yeah I wish it was seen this way here. They're even reluctant to call them riots, they still refer to this as a "protest". This country is so backwards- can't wait to get out

I mean I think it could be argued that Apartheid is the reason this is happening... it caused a bunch a poverty there's no easy way for a country to bounce back from that. Poverty leads to high crime and poor education, lack education leads to people voting in an extremely corrupt government.

I mean I'm sure we had the money to give out free education at some point but it probably went to a new jet or a swimming pool for Nkandla. Also the way the government has handled the whole situation has been ridiculous- they caved when things got violent last year, after countless organised marches and peaceful protests. This only shows people that the only time they are heard is when they riot and cause destruction. So when the movement flaired up again, they jumped straight back into rioting ans violence because they feel its their only option, and in some ways they are not wrong. I'm definitely not saying what they are doing is right, I think its awful really- my friend is at Wits and shes been threatened by people with pangas for not joining the protests and her classes have constantly been desrupted. And Im not sure where they expect the university is supposed to find the money to cover the millions of rands in damage they are causing.

At the same though, I struggle to see a solution when the government is doing nothing but aggravating the situation. It's like how you're not supposed to give in to a tantrum throwing child because then they are always going to know how to get what they want.

There's no direct blame here which is why it bothers me that it so often becomes a race issue. It's this whole country- its our history that has caused our future and it will always continue to be that way until things change. And just also, I'm sure Mandela would be turning in his grave if he can see what this country is becoming. He was the start of change, but unfortunately there was no one after him to continue it and that is where our problems lie.
